Seoul has an extensive and first rate civil defense structure. All they need is about a 30 minute forewarning.

    Makes sense.

    the Russian city of Sevastopol.

Sevatopol is in the Crimea. You know, the Black Sea.

First, they don’t patrol there because the waters are shallow

    This wouldn’t be a patrol.

Second, the range of the Trident missiles SSBNs carry means they don’t have to be “next door” or even in the same f~~~ing hemisphere as their target.

It’s not a matter of range. It’s a matter of trajectory.

The East China Sea is about the only place where we can park a boomer and have a launch trajectory that doesn’t cross anywhere that would make China or Russia overly nervous. You, yourself, have stated how China would be deeply concerned about anything going towards Manchuria. Well that’s exactly where anything coming from the middle pacific would be going if it doesn’t drop on the norks.

And to be honest, we probably want the Chinese to know it’s there, to make sure they know we’re serious when we say: “You have thirty days.” Maybe have the crew blast Louie Louie over the internal sound system 24/7.

Regardless of which option we end up going with, I think we can all agree that we should have solved this problem a lot sooner. This should be a lesson to our leaders that we should not let things get to this point.

Agreed big problems often grow from small ones left unattended. We should have settled this back in 1952. And of course the Clinton administrations bungling appeasement policy which accelerated the North’s nuclear program didn’t help.

Also the Nkorean navy only has three capital ships–frigates the rest are all local patrol craft. Hardly a threat to be concerned with.

BTW I got the city wrong because I was talking to someone else on the phone about the siege of Sevastopol in WWII and the fact that the Romanians took 130,000 casualties there. Please forgive my error.

Patrol or not, we’re not going to parade a boomer past the PRC’s sonar networks.

The East China Sea is about the only place where we can park a boomer…

We don’t need to park a boomer. There are any number of USN surface hulls which can and do carry SLCMs.

Ships in the Sea of Japan can launch with impunity–the target is a mere 700 miles away. A missile covers that distance in 20 minutes. Air launched missiles even faster. Our own artillery armed with tactical nukes hit within 3 minutes. Who cares about their sonar network? Its irrelevant.

North Korea is the zit of the world. Eventually someone has to squeeze it, and it will definitely be explosive, but we’ll be better off when it’s gone.

Which is why I pointed out all the surface hulls that carry SLCMs.

What Mr Warmbier did was against their laws, and it was a major insult to them. He should have known better, but the worst is he did it to get a used car and a few bucks from some church or something to that effect.

Exactly. Warmbier was willfully ignorant and paid the price. Stupidity, even in this day and age, still can carry the death penalty.

It isn’t as if Warmbier didn’t know anything about the DPRK or how the Norks behave. He couldn’t even leave the US on a US passport if his announced intention was to visit the DPRK, so he was lying from the first.

While what happened to him is unspeakable, let’s not pretend he was some babe in the woods. He lied about his intentions to visit and he did have ulterior motives for visiting. He wasn’t some unlucky tourist kidnapped off the street.

^ This is one of the best posts in this thread. Well done.

I too agree with OldBill’s point about Otto being stupid enough to go there in the first place BUT that doesn’t mean we ignore everything else either.

thus they don’t enter the equation.

China enters into the equation because we really would much rather they and South Korea fix this s~~~ instead of us.

We’ve done more than enough “nation building” already.

China keeps N/K around if only as a buffer between China and the “West”. China will not allow ROK & US to be on the opposite side of the Yalu River.
Pertaining to the question on whether the US can go nuclear before N/K, I am of the opinion that if masses of N/K troops started to cross the DMZ that tactical nuclear weapons are the first and only real option to stop them. I’m not saying that we should do it but I’m willing to bet those are the standing orders shall it happen.

Agreed. Once we reduce NKorea to a lifeless radio-active wasteland—they can have it.

This will renew my confidence in the trajectory of our country. I think this is necessary for our long-term survival. I want my tax dollars being utilized for this operation. You have my vote, Pete.

Tower, it’s even worse than that. They have a whole air wing of women pilots.

I know during the bad old Cold War days in Europe, the US and NATO had a “No First Use” policy regarding nukes right down to the tactical level.

I do not know if that policy exists or ever existed on the Korean peninsular.

Pete, thoughts on dropping a half dozen or so Rods from God (Tungsten Penetrators) on Rocket Man and his military brass’ locations?

I am pretty sure Trump does not care if we do or do not. He is most likely prepared to use whatever means necessary. That is my guess.
