Anonymous14I’m not saying that we should do it but I’m willing to bet those are the standing orders shall it happen.
I know during the bad old Cold War days in Europe, the US and NATO had a “No First Use” policy regarding nukes right down to the tactical level.
I do not know if that policy exists or ever existed on the Korean peninsular.
From memory, we withdrew our tactical nukes (or claimed to remove them) when the South introduced the Sunshine Policy. I don’t know for certain either whether their usage is protocol or not but seeing how this World is today it probably is. Regardless, we have them on our carriers so they aren’t that far from physically being there.
At least during the Cold War there was some form of calm due to both sides fear of M.A.D. (Mutually Assured Destruction for our younger Brothers). Now, things are so radically far out from the realm of normalcy that I miss the comfort of the 70s and 80s. I truly do.
Anonymous14Also the Nkorean navy only has three capital ships–frigates the rest are all local patrol craft. Hardly a threat to be concerned with.
Do not forget the unmentioned ace up their sleeve Pete :P. Tellin ya, imagine the worst case scenario and then add crack cocaine and steroids to the equation. It is that serious.
I only have 1 question.
What the f~~~ was that asshole doing in North Korea?
He is dead, too bad, moving on. That’s what you get when you get into a s~~~ hole tiranical third world Asian country. No big deal.
I don’t like Kim, or trump, but I wold love a Nuclear SHTF, although hitlery was better for my plans.
To those following me, be careful, I just farted. Men those beans are killers.

Good question.

I hate to burst the bubble but the no first use policy was a lie. How do I know? I was an MP in 1981 and I was going to be assigned to a secret cruise missile site armed with nukes in Germany. I wasn’t sent for several reasons but one of the reasons was that during the briefing by a full bird Col. he asked for questions and I was young and stupid and I asked about this policy and pointed out that President Reagan the week before denied that any intermediate range cruise missiles were positioned in Europe. So what’s the deal?
He told us that the no first use policy was merely for public consumption. the next day my security clearance was revoked, and my MOS was reclassified within a week. Oh well should have kept my mouth shut.

Page 3. He went to steal a political banner from the 6th floor of his hotel and was caught. He would have won the awesome prize of a used car and a little pocket change.

He was a f~~~ing moron. Regardless, I am hoping for a quick resolution to this problem. We need to knock him and knock him fast.

I’m wondering if they didn’t use him as a guinea pig for chem/psy/et al weaponry. X-File?
.
Once again, I’ll ask the question none of you chickenhawks want to answer:
If the DPRK doesn’t go nuclear in it’s attack on the ROK, US forces station, and/or Japan, can the US go nuclear in response?
Isn’t that like asking if we should bring knives to a Gun fight?
Meditating on the Wisdom & Truths of Man, Isn't just a Philosophy, but a Calling......Be willing to be Called a Man!Patrol or not, we’re not going to parade a boomer past the PRC’s sonar networks.
Why not? They won’t learn a thing about how quiet we are when we roll in with speakers blazing.
We don’t need to park a boomer. There are any number of USN surface hulls which can and do carry SLCMs.
But do any of them have the same capacity? I can’t think of anything short of a carrier group.
The point of using a boomer is the message it says: “Look at this s~~~. It is extremely nasty. And we are prepared to light this f~~~er off if you can’t get your s~~~ together. Also we have dozens more where this came from and you have no idea where they are.”
All we have to do is make sure China knows we’ll go there in 30 days and they’ll work something out with South Korea before it happens. If they know we’ll launch to end this s~~~, we won’t have to.
China keeps N/K around if only as a buffer between China and the “West”. China will not allow ROK & US to be on the opposite side of the Yalu River.
A hot radioactive wasteland makes a damn good barrier, but one that I think China would rather avoid. Given the choice between a hot war and a negotiated dissolution of the norks, they’d rather be neighbors. Especially since they stand to gain some pretty heavy concessions out of the deal. Besides, that policy comes from a time when China was relatively isolationist, and we weren’t their largest trading partner, with Japan and South Korea taking up positions two and three.
They’ve already shown they aren’t wedded to the idea of saving the norks, come what may. They’re more of a liability these days than any strategic benefit, and they could potentially have a lot to gain at the negotiating table.

+10

It depends on which capacity you want to use and that’s what this thread has been all about.
An Ohio-class boomer can land as many 288 warheads on the DPRK. They carry 24 Trident-II ICBMs each of which can have up to 12 warheads on their MIRV buses. Those warheads are either W76/100 kiloton or W88/475 kiloton types.
The Flight II and IIA Arleigh Burke-class DDGs can launch as many as 96 Tomahawk SLCMs each of which can carry a single W80 warhead with a variable yield between 5 and 200 kilotons or a single W84 warhead with a variable yield between 0.2 and 150 kilotons.
SLCMs are more accurate than ICBMs with a CEP of ~10 meters for the former and ~90 meters for the latter.
Three DDGs can land as many warheads on the DPRK as a single SSBN. The weapons the DDGs use will also be more accurate allowing nuclear warheads with smaller yields or even conventional warheads to be used – something which might be important if you think fallout and where it will travel are an issue.
Of course you could steam an SSBN past the PRC’s sonar nets giving them a nice “fingerprint” for their SSNs to possibly use in the future and launch less accurate ICBMs with bigger warheads which will create more fallout. The SSBN option makes sense if your intention isn’t to disarm the DPRK in a surgical strike with minimal collateral damage and is instead intended to show off how large your penis is.
Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.

You’re still thinking in tactical terms. I’m talking diplomatics.
Missile destroyers are great for limited targeted surgical strikes.
Boomers end countries.
They send a completely different message, and this is a situation where we want China to listen. And the message is that one way or another the North Korea situation ends within thirty days.

I agree. I wish you were President.
I agree. I wish you were President.
I don’t need headaches like that. And once the bill comes due for the Obama presidency I think it will be a LONG time before this country considers another black president.
The thing is the North Korean problem cannot go on forever. We can’t keep kicking that can down the road. But it really should be South Korea and China’s problem to solve, not ours. The difficulty is getting them to actually fix their s~~~ in a way that doesn’t make the entire east pacific go unstably jingoistic.
I often wonder what the f~~~ China is thinking. North Korea is a giant f~~~ing liability for them. Their three largest trading partners are, in order, the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. Who does North Korea keep threatening? The U.S., Japan, and South Korea. Standing by them might have made some sort of crazy commie cold war logic, but in the 21st century global economy it’s just plain retarded.

I have repeatedly asked the same question.
what exactly did Otto Warmbier do? Wiki says he was drunk and tried to steal a poster but was there more to it?
and it looks like the Chinese are starting to do something…
You’re still thinking in tactical terms. I’m talking diplomatics.
I’m thinking. You’re just blowing smoke. And ignorant smoke at that.
You want us to use a SSBN and you know nothing about the weapons it carries or how it works. You didn’t even know about SLCMs or that nearly every surface ship in the USN carries them. All you can do is chant Nuke nuke nuke nuke…
I can kill the DPRK without parking a National Strategic Asset on China’s front porch. I can kill the DPRK with a precisely calibrated amount of force. I can kill the DPRK in a way that will limit the fallout which will not only effect China, South Korea, Japan, and Russia but also the entire Northern Hemisphere.
All you can do is grunt HULK SMASH.
Try thinking for a change and try learning about the US’ actual military abilities.

I cannot wait for Trump to wipe out the corrupt regime in North Korea. Their leader should be made an example for the rest of the world to see.
Impale the son of a bitch.
I heard that mental state was brought on because he likely tried to hang himself which deprived his brain of oxygen. Apparently the parents were informed of this and they didn’t want to do an autopsy as it would get out he tried and failed to kill himself.
I still have no clue why he was in North Korea.

That could be true. He was a complete moron to be in North Korea in the first place.
