I guess I was too busy trying to give honest answers to Trolling questions. My Bad.

Anyway, You gonna’ do it? I told you what to do if you want to know. Or are you just just winding people up to dent their faith.

Or are you just just winding people up to dent their faith.

I think I’ve been pretty clear on why I started this thread. If you don’t think that I’m on the level then just ignore my posts.

I do find it interesting thought that asking legitimate questions “winds people up”. If Christianity is completely valid and credible, why should anyone get upset over a few simple and honest questions???

    Don’t be scared,

I’m not scared. Like I’ve already mentioned on other threads, my Sleep Paralysis experiences are far more terrifying and ‘seemingly’ supernatural then anything you’ve mentioned. But please don’t take my word for it. Google “Sleep Paralysis” and see how others have described their individual experiences…

    @blade

I’m a fan of Monty Python films but I was trying (on this thread anyway) to dial-it down a slight notch on the mockery.

On a side note, you might want to consider checking into the controversy the film “Life Of Brian” stirred up. It created a real s~~~ storm in it’s day. I think that you might find it interesting…

How do you confirm a story like that?

And that is exactly my point. People will believe a story when there is no reason to think that it’s even true. Nothing else was intentionally implied…

I don’t know why “there is no reason to believe that it is even true” would be the default position. I heard the story 3rd hand from a podcast where the teller presented it as true.
I only put the disclaimer in because I didn’t want to get bogged down in “prove it’s true” gotcha posts.
The story is powerful, and speaks a truth, even if I cannot verify the actual events with actual dates and names, witness statements. Even then you would disbelieve it, so what would the point be?

The fact that whether Greg or I believe it, or find something in it that speaks powerfully to us, doesn’t effect you in the least, but you just can’t help it. You can’t allow anyone to feel something you don’t feel? To find an answer that gives them peace, a peace that you cannot find?

I don’t blame you at all for thinking that but the question was serious. I really can’t figure it out.

Everything about your original post is sensible. No doubt about it. I knew “Adam and Eve” was bulls~~~ when I was about 7 – because in every single painting, they have belly buttons.

    The pastor was blown away.

But thats’ kids for you. They lie about stealing a cookie, but will cut through adult lies like a bulldozer too. Sure, I pretended to believe in Easter bunny when I knew it was crap because I wanted the chocolate, so I acted surprised, even though I saw my parents throw eggs on the ground from their pockets.

    BUT…….

Adam and Eve is also a TRUE story – and we see it play out in divorce and anti-family courts every day. The expulsion from paradise = Woman ruins man’s world.

So is it really bulls~~~? Or is it worth paying attention to?
Because that story was written for a good reason.

The bible has all kinds of lessons, stories and moral questions, trials and tribulations, tests of faith, leaps of faith , metaphors and more.

The 10 commandments is a great movie and story, and the ego of the Pharaoh Ramses is still a common lesson….. because he wasn’t thinking when he wanted to get at Moses. So he ordered every first born killed, and in the process, he killed his own son.

You can liken that to current events right and left.

If a belief system (or the bible) brings a man comfort and understanding, then why shouldn’t he embrace it? Perhaps he’s using it to make sense of a world that is so upside down and skewed against him.

Everybody could afford to have a little faith.
When it’s hard to believe in yourself, sometimes you just need a hand.

WHO CARES where that boost comes from.

If my memory of history serves, a number of early Christian holidays coincided with existing pagan holidays simply because it was convenient for the new Christian communities to keep celebrating on those days.

So for Christmas, because they already were celebrating Solstice, etc.

Also, traditionally Christianity has a much more redemptive theological outlook, instead of an antagonistic, isolationist one. Many early Christian missionaries taught that the existing practices could be “redeemed” for the cause of Christianity. Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater, and all that.

    Finally, consider Romans 14:5:

“One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.”

So to answer Autolite’s original question: No, it doesn’t bother me at all that some Christian holidays coincide with traditional pagan holiday dates.

Christianity, like all human religions, is and always has been, in flux, and has changed significantly over two millenia. It drew many ideas, rituals, and principles from its forebearers — what is technically called syncretism.

Since it was originally a sect within Judaism, worship was on the Jewish sabbath (Saturday), and some Christian denominations, still practice that. Originally, there was debate over whether only Jews could become Christians, or whether gentiles too, could become Christians. Early Christians, of course, practiced Jewish dietary rules and all the other Jewish laws.

Whether Christianity has a ‘redemptive theological outlook’ depends upon who is practicing it, and large and in charge. If you go back a few hundred years, witches were being burned, inquisitions were being held, heretics punished, etc by the Roman Catholic Church. Countries where the Catholic Church OR any one single entity has concentrated political power, often have serious corruption problems.

I have certainly seen it be ‘redemptive’ on an individual level — where faith gives individuals the will to overcome drug addiction or other challenges.

In many ways, we are better off since The Protestant Reformation. When one single denomination or religion does not dominate, it is a good thing. It is good because they do not put their moral rules into place and require them for everyone. It is also good because you don’t have one central power that you aren’t allowed to criticize or hold to account.

But, even atheists can do this when they hold power; the Soviets and later Chinese wanted to limit religion because, in my opinion, they wanted/want all power centralized with the State rather than religious leaders. They didn’t want any counter-revolutionaries, motivated by religion OR secular causes, to threaten their power.

‘paganism’ is often thrown about as a pejorative term, all it means is a religion OTHER than the world’s major religions today, pre-Christian religious beliefs, and sometimes (in case of modern pagans), religions involving nature worship. I’m not pagan, but it’s important to understand what the term means.

To see a bigger picture, remove yourself from the present; in its infancy, Christianity was a cult or sect of Judaism; later, when the Roman Catholic Church was calling the shots, the Jews that birthed it were persecuted.

Give men thousands of years to interpret and try to understand religion and they will inevitably corrupt it for their own personal gain because they are unable or unwilling to follow the teachings of Christ.

You are given free will by God and the choice is up to you how you want to live your life but make no mistake God does exist. It is like the blue pill mentality it will take something special for you to awaken and take the red pill to feel God in your life. That is why there were so many reformations throughout Christianity because no one sect could agree on how the bible should be interpreted because everyone had an agenda and what you see today is a corruption of what was once pure.

The Bible itself was written by men over a span of a few hundred years and each apostle who wrote the Bible had the holy ghost inside him to guide and show him what to write. The Bible is just a guide on how you can better live your life and is filled with metaphors open to many interpretations so of course there will never be a consensus as to what it all really means.

As for holidays those coincide with pagan holidays and were used as a tool to better indoctrinate pagans into Christianity. Christian Orthodox celebrate Christmas on January 7th while Catholics on December 25th. Don’t get stuck on holidays if given enough time Halloween could even be celebrated as a religious Christian holiday instead of the pagan holiday it originated from because it has become mainstream and popular.

People will try to incorporate it eventually because it is a money making machine. Be open to Jesus and ask him to come into your life and he will show himself to you but you have to believe otherwise it is pointless. Or you can choose do be an agnostic or atheist that is the great thing about God he gave you the choice to go your own way and live your life how you want you don’t need to label yourself as part of one of the reformations like Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, etc. Jesus and God is bigger then any one specific denomination.

Edit: I didn’t see the post above until I posted this great post as well.

You can’t allow anyone to feel something you don’t feel? To find an answer that gives them peace, a peace that you cannot find?

It’s not peace that I’m looking for, at least I don’t thing so. It’s just a question that I can’t solve. Why do so many people believe something to be true when the evidence indicates that it’s just all made up nonsense? I just can’t seem to wrap my head around this.

I think I might have to just settle for the fact that my brain is wired different then most others and leave it at that…

Or you can choose do be an agnostic or atheist

Well it’s not really a choice. I’m not sure if I can explain it in a way that everyone can understand. It a realization or a determination. It’s like when you figure out that 2+2=4. I can’t ‘choose’ whether or not to accept that.

I’m not trying to offend anybody with that explanation. That’s just the best way I can think of to describe my Atheism…
