Great example. Iraq under Saddam was also a pretty secular country if you remember. Iran was actually very secular under the Shah. We screwed up by not supporting the Shah when he needed us. Saudi Arabia has used their wealth to promote their brand of Islam and it has actually backfired on them. We also helped create the monster with our support of the Taliban during the Soviet-Afghan War.

The United States needs to take an active approach because we are really the only country that can fix things. We also do not want this menace on our shores. I think President Trump understands this.

With respect but I grew up with the Troubles in NI. Religion was/is only a subtext in what was/is a national identity war. This is my personal opinion.

Very few terrorists on either side were religious, or even cited it. It goes back 400 years to the plantation of Ulster by Scottish and English settlers. Catholicism was outlawed on the mainland and the native Irish were of course devout Roman Catholics. The famine affected both sides, but more Catholics died because they were far more numerous, and the British government actively stopped food reaching them. That has never been forgotten here. And it never should be. It poisoned Anglo-Irish relations, hopefully not forever.

Protestants have always had a siege mentality, with occassional atrocities commited on them, and identified with their roots across the Irish Sea. The first glimmers of modern Irish nationalism were headed by protestants like Parnell, who was Irish first and protestant second. A typically Celtic paradox.

Last century the troubles started among two communities divided by national affiliation and THEN religious differences. NI was secular like most other countries. ‘Irish’ invariably went with ‘catholic’ and ‘British’ was ‘protestant’.

Both churches actively sought and seek peace, its a big reason why my faith is strong – the troubles were sheer madness, and I have friends from both traditions, even my family is mixed. The best thing is I can have two passports, and I’m equally British and Irish and see no conflict of interest in that. Many still can’t, but I’ve long since worried about what other people think about me.

A whole generation has grown up in relative peace, and since coming home I’ve noticed huge differences in opinion, its just not as raw as it was in the dark days of the 80s. That’s hope for the future.

Thanks for the history lesson. I had to Irish Catholic friends from the US go over there in the 80’s and they said it was crazy. Being stopped at checkpoints, being watched all the time. I kind of figured it settled down over the years.

And you made my point from an earlier post: someone uses religion to divide us and get us to kill each other.

Syria is a good example also. Prior to our bungling it was safe, secure and prosperous as was Lebanon. Lebanon in the 50s was known as the “Switzerland” of the middle east. Both of these countries have been trashed.

It was and that was when Lebanon was about 50/50 Christian and Muslim. Afghanistan was also a lot more advanced at one point before Islamic fundamentalists took over.

Iraq was a lot more secular under Hussein but I have also read that Iraq/Hussein wasn’t all that Islamic either.

The biggest mistake APART from invading Iraq in the first place was outlawing the secular Ba’ath Party of Saddam and disbanding his police force. Power vacuums always get filled by the unhinged first.

And Afghanistan was a major stop on the ‘hippie trail’ into India in the 1960s. There’s photos of Afghan girls in miniskirts back then.

Asia is mystifying to the west, GWB and that other fool Blair ignored the history and cultures of these places and tried to build Washington DC on the banks of the Tigris. Hubris and tragedy; then follow the cause & effect trail through Libya, Syria to trucks mounting pavements at 70mph in European capitals.

All they had to do was open a book, even TE Lawrence got it, and he left the desert disgusted with the mess left by Sykes-Picot.

I think the difference between east and west in regard to war is the west only has the capacity to view success or failure in ridiculously short time frames and they keep amplifying intensity and resources into yet shorter and shorter windows.

The west want to launch an attack and have an edited video and medal ceremony the same afternoon all packaged into a neat 30second sound grab on the news that same night….and that’s a wrap.

War to west follows the same media design template as televised football.

The West still fights wars as if it were a game of Risk or Chess – “We took your capital city, we win!” the problem is you can take their entire country and they will keep fighting against you anyway.

Not to mention it really doesn’t help when you allow the people you just bombed and displaced to pour into your country to make it easier for them to commit terror attacks against you.

I met an auld fella with one eye in a PB in Helmand in 2012. He was called ‘the engineer’ by all the locals in our compound because he was a bit of a bush mechanic and kept the gennies going in the awful heat.

Most of my day was spent in full kit outside the trailer my client worked in, sitting in the shade shooting the s~~~ with the engineer and our gate guards.

He was one wily old fox. He lost his eye fighting the Russians and was a bit of a legend around the local area. He was a muj commander and killed many reds.

One day he asked me where my accent was from, he spoke a few sentences in English, but the terp usually hung out with me as my client was a no-nonsense guy and I liked a bit of banter. Having the terp there meant we got to know each other pretty well. The engineer worked out by my voice I wasn’t American. I told him I was Northern Irish and the auld boy asks me right there if the Catholics were still fighting the Protestants! I asked him how did he know that, considering Helmand Province has some of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. When he was a boy they were taught history in school and geography, science etc. Now its the Koran and that’s about it.

He hated the Taliban, and he was Pashtun himself, and they had a bounty on his head. I reckon they feared him too, because of his reputation as a red killer. He said the Taliban were not representative of Afghans or Islam or Pashtuns, and asked me to let people know that at home.

So here I am telling it. I respect an old warrior like the engineer more than the stupid politicians who get us into these wars, they abandoned the mujahedeen when the Russians left, some gratitude, they could’ve made it like the 1960s again. Instead that auld boy isn’t safe in his own village, and many people in the west think he’s just another tusken s~~~ farmer.

I have no truck with Muslims, less than I have with the cowards and weasels in our own society.
