I think there are three reasons why a sane man might kill himself.
Short term pain drives him over the edge -this is the one to avoid. Say your ex girlfriend falsely accuses you of raping her and you lose your job. Here a man really needs to see things in perspective and see that he will survive this one.
Life is no longer worth living -you have early senile dementia or a very painful cancer that makes you unable to function normally. In such cases I think it is reasonable to kill oneself.
You really have ruined your life and it is better for you and your dependents if you die now. -You are a politician who has done something very bad, a serial rapist or murder who has is about to be apprehended. You are an officer who sanctioned his men committing a grave war crime for which they will all be punished unless you take the sole blame. In this case suicide is the honorable solution.
The sad fact is that the line between the first situation and the last one has become quite blurred by the current situation in our society that can rob a man of everything he has including his prospects really easily. Epstein is a perfect example (assuming he did kill himself under pressure). Did he really deserve to die? He wasn’t even a paedo. He liked sexually mature but underage girls. Its a crime but not a perversion and none of them complained when he was paying them generously. Anyway he thought he was better off dead and that says something about our society.
What about say a man who is quite old and rich and realises he is about to be divorce raped? If he kills himself his will can be enacted leaving his money to his children and his horrid wife in equal shares. If he lives she will take all he worked for, leave him a husk of a man in his declining years and when he dies his children will get very little as he will have used most of it up in old age. Its a tempting thing to do to kill yourself in that situation.
There are a lot of men who have no hope left these days and the lives they will live are small and mean and not the things they dreamed of as boys but they are irredeemable by now. They can never climb the hill of resources needed to become a respected man. Maybe they also got into trouble with the big state too once and so shut themselves out of being able to be heard or valued as people. Their ex wife took the house and turned their children against them. The best they can hope now is low wage high hours work, rented accommodation (probably shared) and attention from the lowest grade of women only when they give a lot or formally pay. And the grind will continue till a lonely old age and death. Honestly in that situation, I would be tempted.
It isn’t rocket science. Men are killing themselves because their lives are not all that full of value. Its important to tell the suicidal individual that this is wrong and he can yet find value and meaning but it is also important to see the picture as a whole. Men are quitting the table because the game is rigged and they have lost.
