I don’t seek validation but even I sometimes look to see how many people have given me a “plus” vote on my posts

I honestly couldn’t care less how many people do or don’t like what I post but it feels like a facebook thing so isn’t great

I’m gonna take this opportunity and ask keymaster if its possible to hide my reputation like mr. Rennie and Mr. Roydal.

We had this topic already. The +1 system works well in sniffing out tuna fish.

It separates the veterans from the newcomers. Most tuna that got fished out was easier to detect with a low +1 rating.

Because if someone particpates in this forum long enough to have few 1000 stars then he is probably someone with an accepted and productive attiude and not a troll.

Tuna most likely will not write more than a thousand replies without exposing itself.

My question to Keymaster is if there is an option to turn it on or off somehow.

In July of 2018, this honey pot forum was sold out to an unidentified NPC sock puppet and troll organization. Most independent thinkers and writers migrated to other MGTOW forums as a result of the never-ending infighting and deliberate trouble starting caused by members who were given "carte blanche" by the admin to do whatever they want. Before my departure, I only left a few thousand cat pics here to comfort and ridicule the feminist owners who now run this place. Their background agenda is to make MGTOW look like a club of losers the public eye. And during the course of 2019, they actually managed to destroy almost all other MGTOW venues as well. Here is the truth about "theindependentman.org" aka "TIM" which was created as an extended workbench to further divide the community. I have been looking and there are loads of good posts that don’t get “votes” for whatever reason

just feels like a validation exercise to me

I support upvoting on posts. It allows people to see which posts have the most people agree with said posts.

Yeah I feel that too sometimes though I blame most of it on my inability to correctly express myself in terms of language…. English isn’t my first language and whatever English they teach in my country is really naive.

Its not really important to score reputation. I give +1s to every posts, sometimes even tunas in threads where they’re getting called out…it just doesn’t matter.

Its not like Mr. MGTOWer, the member with supposedly the highest reputation, is enjoying more privileges than a member with 50-60 rep. points.

Real respect comes not from the numbers under your name; rather it comes from sensible discussions/debate and getting your facts straight. It depends on how much people subscribe to your ideas and have similar thought processes like you.

Don’t make it a validation thing. Like I said, there are no special privileges based on your stars.

Well you are perfectly right. Sometimes it takes an hour to write one and you don’t even get a “+1” for it.

Especially long posts are often underrated.

And the “one liner” answers at the beginning of a thread sometimes have astronomically high +1 points while the more elaborate posts that take time to write and thus “come in later” will get no evaluation.

    But somehow the system works.

The best thing is to discipline every member to actively use it and evaluate every post they read.

I always do this. So my communication partner gets the acknowledgment of my reading and that he didn’t write it for no one.

And it is there for forum lurkers. The more up-votes we have, the more serious a visitor will take what he or she reads.

Without these votes, outside readers might come to the false conclusion that we “talk to the walls” and nobody wants to read what we write.

Up-votes are good advertising to what we write. And they add credibility to our point of view.

Like when they say in a commercial “1 million sold”, just to boost their reputation. If our +1 system would reflect the actual number of readers then our voices will most likely be taken more seriously.

Like anything else, if it bugs you don’t look at it.
I like to see others rankings, it flags me to who I might pay more attention to, listen more closely, or who is new and would be a tuna or seeking more guidance.

I always do this. So my communication partner gets the acknowledgment of my reading and that he didn’t write it for no one.

I’ve the same pattern, I click into the +1 to get the person who I’m talking to know that “I’ve read that”.

I also see the +1 button as “I think the same and won’t need to post it to pollute the thread”.

Obviously short answers will have more people who read them, people sometimes don’t have time to read everything, that happens.

And I completely agree about the overall score been kept, there is no chance of getting a big score, without showing yourself, and tune get caught there. This is not a competition, lot of people with low scores post excellent answers. But when you have a suspicion that someone is a troll, the low score will help you to find out.

For those who don’t want to show the score, if Key Master accept the idea, hide the score and put a “MGTOW Certified Member”, so you won’t expect trolls, links to malware, improper content, etc, coming from those guys.

    “MGTOW Certified Member”,

That is fine, but should be earned with a minimum amount of posts or time.

Listen, just read your post again and then compare it to other men here where English is there second language.

    Your English is fine.

Good posts in your estimation. Perhaps not too good in the estimation of others.

just feels like a validation exercise to me

What validation? What is actually gained?

Do you seriously think the men here make posts for the sole purpose of “earning” up votes? Do you actually think less of your own posts if they don’t “earn” enough up votes?

We all have limited time to read these forums. None of us can follow each and every thread reading each and every post. We need a sorting process of some sort and the up vote system provides that. While none of us can read each and every post in each and every thread, as a group we all can because of up votes.

For example, there are many posters here whom I follow. I read every post they make because of their “track records”. There are also a few posters whom I regularly ignore due to their records or because I find them boring. In between, there are thousands of posts and I simply don’t have the time to read them all.

When I dip into a normal thread, I’ll read the OP and then read those posters I follow plus those posts with good ratings. In a good or “hot” thread, I’ll read every post.

Here’s the kicker. When I’m reading a thread and I come across a well up-voted post from a member I normally would have ignored, I read it. Up vote means my brothers here found something of worth in that post so it behooves me to read it no matter who the writer may be.

Up votes help me overcome my own biases.

If you think up votes are nothing but a validation exercise or, considering the fact that you’re bitching about it, a lack of validation, that’s your problem. You’re overlooking a useful tool.

I use up votes to challenge, combat, and change my inherent biases and I believe many of the members here do the same.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.

    That’s a good point.
I have plenty of biases and having them challenged is good for helping me keep my perspective. Some are old biases from older times that served me well back then but not so much now. As the world changes I need to change too. Up votes on things I disagree with make me ponder my position. I may, or may not, change my thinking, but at least I am aware that my thinking might be outdated.

The only thing it actually does is removes the number under your name. You can still see if people upvoted your posts in the thread. Honestly I just cant be bothered trying to keep up with the Joneses and now that I am in the workforce I don’t have the virtually infinite time I used to. But I had atleast 5000 the last time I saw it.

    The upvotes should stay though.

I believe upgrading to Galt member level gives you the option of making your profile private. If you do that I think that is what removes the count from your posts.
