Last week GregB0 posted a thread in which he pointed out the vast number of “silent” members here and asked for ideas on how to coax them into participating. The site has over 25,000 members yet only a few hundred have posted one or more times.

Ever the pedant, I opined that a huge number of member accounts were made by people who never intended to participate and are only here to watch or, more ominously, monitor our conversations.

The recent “fun” with “Peter Pan” strongly supports that hypotheses.

For those of you lucky enough to miss it, “Peter Pan” began several threads in quick succession full of odd verbiage, odder video links, and claims of being “gifted” and “sensitive” along with the more usual veiled insults and pseudo-philosophical gibberish of a master troll. More importantly, in a few short hours and with less then two dozen posts, “Peter Pan” was able to rack up over five hundred up-votes.

That’s right. “Peter Pan” was somehow able to “earn” over five hundred of those little +1 stars in just a few hours time.

It’s possible that they had dozens of sock puppet accounts which they used to “brigade” all those up-votes. It’s equally possible that they have dozens of friends and confidants who were in on the trolling attempt and up-voted the posts to add the confusion. It’s also possible that many lurkers liked what they saw “Peter Pan” doing and voted just for the hell of it. The best possibility, of course, is that all of those three things took place.

Before anyone misunderstands, I’m not suggesting that even a simple majority of these silent accounts are held by active lurkers who are inimicable to the MGTOW message. I still believe a majority of the silent accounts are inactive and were made by people who were mildly interested, looked around, and then left never to come back.

This latest troll does prove, however, that there are active lurkers here who hold no sympathy towards or love for MGTOW. Everything you post here can be read by anyone who wishes to and some of those reading what you post will take great exception to your thoughts and opinions.

Stealthy didn’t ask Keymaster to cancel his account and delete all his messages just for s~~~s and giggles. The threat real and we all need to accept that fact.

I try to post as little identifying info as possible b/c I’m going through a divorce. I also censor my oppinions for this reason. Given the wringer her and her lawyer are trying to put me through, I will not give them an inch of rope.

A co-worker recently told me, "If you want to see who someone really is, divorce them." I have found out how true this is. When your wife drops the façade of being the caring partner, you will witness all of the greed, hate, and spite that she has masked. It is truly breathtaking!

As I pointed out recently, there have already been references to MGTOW and to this website as a ‘hate group’.

The attempt to close down MGTOW has begun.

Watch out for new posters who advocate turning MGTOW into a membership organisation or who advocate violence.

Someone already mentioned paragraphs to you, svmc. I’ll echo that and reemphasize the point that presentation counts. Spelling, spacing between sentences, proper capitalization, sentence structure, all of it matters.

After all, if you can’t be bothered to write in a clear and coherent manner, why should the rest of us be bothered to read what you post?

Are profiles mandatory?

May I also suggest requiring an intro paragraph or two to make sure whoever has signed up has provided one within a few days to make sure they are legit?
I know it will bring down our numbers, but it will go a long way in ensuring the membership we have is not trolling or gathering information.

Not everyone can write well, but any attempt will give us more reason to feel safe around these new members.

The Intros can be removed after a month or two if the poster wants to get rid of it.

I triggered that troll to come back at me immediately when I stated that women have no clue how the average man even exists. I could sense much angst within it. She is not a pleasant person.

Good analysis OldBill. There could also have been an exploit used to trigger the star too though a slew of hostile ghost accounts is possible.

I will continue to exercise freedom of speech on behalf of the silent brothers. Trolls come in waves.

For me personally, its all about time. I’m a widowed single dad with two children with me full time. Having time to write out my intro about my miserable married life story is going to take time. Time is a precious thing to a very busy guy like me. How about a time period. Lets say you have 120 days to post a profile/intro after signing up. Would that be fair?
