I’m pretty terrified of flying too. I freak out in confined spaces, I even tend to panic a bit when I’m boxed in on a highway. For me when they close the door of an airplane and you hear it start to pressurize, thats when I really start to freak out.
My other issue is that If I can’t see the horizon my head starts to spin, like I can’t tell which way is up. The dizziness lasts a long time. Which gets tricky because my job sometimes requires me to get off of a plane, head to a venue and start climbing ladders.

Phobias f~~~ing suck. I nearly developed agoraphobia a few years back. It was so bad my hands would start shaking and I’d start to sweat as soon as I touched the door handle.

I think they’re an unconscious response to trauma. A mini way of dealing with the fickle.nature of life, death, and pain.

It took me forcing myself to go outside with a goal to get over it. Flying and height phobias take longer I think, because how often are you actually in those situations? They’re both pretty easy to wiggle out of doing.

You know what? I feel your pain but I’m actually flying for the first time next month as well and I’m 45. That might be shocking for people but for me it wasn’t a fear of flying. It was first I wasn’t really into the concept of travel. Also the fact my parents never took me to their homeland which is St. Vincent because they never wanted to go back. However, they pushed me to go yet they don’t like it down there themselves. How can you expect a kid to just want to go when your parents don’t want to go. That’s the thing my parents and family don’t see. Then to go down there and you don’t really know family down there that well. All these aspects turned me off. Then as an adult thats still my feelings. Also, I used to have a problem paying for something you can’t see but you go there to get away. It’s only in recent years watching videos how places like D.R, Cuba and Brazil can be fun places for a single man. That’s when it bit me for me. So not really fear of dying on a plane. I have a motorcycle so can easily get killed there. So my advice go to your doctor and maybe get some anxiety meds or something like that.

Sounds like claustrophobia to me rather than a fear of flying. Are you the same on busy trains and packed buses?

I hate to fly on 737’s. They don’t fly as smoothly as larger planes. I recall being seated next to a disgusting, lisp talking, f~~~~~ on a flight. It was hot in the cabin and this puke was sweating and had nasty looking lesions on his neck (probably AIDS or some s~~~). The air was bumpy and the little stubby 737 was bouncing up and dropping straight down. F~~~ me. I was so miserable that I was actually praying for the plane to crash, just to put me out of my misery.

Agreed – 737s suck. I did a lot of business flying between NY and Cleveland years ago – all 737s. When they would come wallowing over Flushing Bay coming back to LGA it was horrible. Power on, power off, wallow wallow wallow.

Maybe try looking at it as a type of an adventure. I used to like going for rides on the airforce C130s. In those planes, you sat along the sides facing across from each other.

It was kinda funny watching everybody ‘lean into it’ when during the landing roll the pilot slams the props into reverse. The fumes from the jet fuel and hydraulic fluid dripping into your face just added to the whole experience… 😀

I still don’t get why they make the damn toilets so f~~~ing small.

    Claustrophobia.

That is nothing. The Concord had a really small cabin, so the toilets where even smaller. Once a landwhale got stuck in it. They had to land the plane with her in the toilet, then a crew of mechanics dismantled the toilet to get her out.
    THAT IS CLAUSTROPHOBIA TRAUMA INDUCING!

I am a ultralight pilot. The smaller and lighter they are the more they move. Large airplanes are sluggish and hardly feel the wind in comparison.
I also live in a windy place, so most of my instruction flights where near the aircraft wind limits.
My first low pass over the runway was done at strong crosswinds, with the plane at 45 degree. The instructor (former militar and commercial line pilot) was yelling the whole time “lower, lower!”
    I love landing at crosswinds.
Bellow I will post a good video for you. After our preparation, you will have no problem boarding the plane.

So, whatever you are afraid of, dont worry. If you see people bumping in the ceiling, ONLY THEN you need to worry. And I am not joking. People are not used to the vertical dimension of motion, and they overreact to what is – in aviation terms – pretty mild motion.
Be aware that commercial pilots have to spare passengers of discomfort. That gives people the wrong experience of flying. The real flying is bumpy. Airplanes are able to endure more that people can receive.

The only one here that is in danger is Sky-O, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane!

And to conclude, flying is totally safe. NOBODY EVER DIED IN THE SKY! The f~~~ing ground is the problem.

Whatever you do avoid this C~~~itous obnoxious as she is more dangerous as actual flight phase.

The worst flight I ever had was was in a 737. We circled Newark for 30 minutes before being allowed to land. The winds were right below FAA limits and JFK and LGA were shut down. Raritan Bay looked liked Neptune was p~~~ed off. The plane sounded like someone was beating the fuselage with a hammer coupled with random sudden 2 second free fall plunges made for an interesting flight.

The male pilot put her down perfectly.

    We circled Newark

Gotta love the modern (sic) NY Metro airports…

One of my 737 returns to LGA was during full on crap weather – it was honking from the east so we did an approach from the Manhattan side – wallowed our way down, and just as the wheels touched the pilot went WOT and popped us back up. Came on intercom and said something along the lines of “that plane wasn’t supposed to be our runway”.

“that plane wasn’t supposed to be our runway”.

    That’s very comforting.

I once watched an MD-88 execute a sudden U-turn while on final approach at my local airport. I’m sure the passengers freaked. The pilot handled it well and the second approach was perfect. I was surprised a commercial airliner could pull that one off.

I used to LOVE flying. What I don’t like is all the airport bulls~~~. There is nothing pleasant about it anymore.

I don’t take pills for anything, but once, I grabbed two sleeping aids at the airport and popped them before takeoff. I was out cold. It was fantastic, because I couldn’t sleep on a plane if my life depended on it.

F~~~ knows how I’m going to handle it. It’s depressing as f~~~ being in airports. The formalities, the smells, the dull people, the long f~~~ing waits, being hungry and having no money to get some food so having to wait til i get on the plane and asking for another meal after i’ve already had one. Other stuff ive prob forgotten.

Wish i could afford first class.

Same thing happened to me at Bradly Field, 757, our belts were on for the last half hour and we were being thrown around same bumpy way, on the landing you could tell the pilot shoved it into the ground at the last possible moment, he committed the landing to avoid bouncing, he was crabbing too. I thought he did good considering one never knows when you get or loose allot of lift, he used all the suspension pressing the ship into the ground, we weren’t popping back up that much I could tell. It was an unsettling landing, when I left the terminal there was leaves, dirt, and dust being kicked up by the winds, the ride home was gusty too.

Those are my problems with flying as well. Also, not having control of the plane myself (Even though I can’t fly) and not being able to see out of the front of the plane makes me anxious.

Last flight I was on I tried to read and my head started spinning like crazy. I have to keep an eye on the horizon too or I start spinning. Never had that problem when I was a kid though.

On a flight back from Prague, some old timer had plied himself with whiskey and decided to smoke a cigarette in the bogs which set off a silent alarm. All the air hostesses went charging to the to the other end of the plane to greet the culprit.

I was with with my brother who was a nervous flyer and had to know what was going on so we were told.

The alarm isn’t very silent when your watching 4 stewardesses belt it to the other end of the plane.

I enjoy flying, but I admit that had me spooked.

Just been looking at the ‘suites’ you can pay for if you’re loaded. Man I wish I could travel in one of them. Makes economy class look like torture.
