Both my mom and dad agree that the military would be good for me since it would give me the ‘discipline’ I need. I, however, hold moral and political objections to joining the military. I believe that the U.S. military industrial complex globalist puppeteering scam only serves to spread (((democracy))) across the world and not steal gold and oil for (((them))). I also don’t approve of the tactics of waterboarding and torture used in the C.I.A. and military (especially with Trump being a proponent of torture). I do not believe in senseless killing for what is now an empire.
If I were to become a (((slave)))) to the system, I would most likely enlist in the Coast Guard or Air Force. The benefits look extensive, but I’m not sure if I could hold down a 9-5 job or obey an order that does against my order. I was wondering if any brothers here were enlisted in any of the 5 branches of the military, so I acquire some anecdotal evidence to supplement my claims or refute them. Thanks in advance.

I served in the military and it changed my life. I also got $$ for college. HOWEVER I do not recommend it if you are plagued with social concerns. The military exists to do two things:
Kill people and blow up things. (not nation build, not spread democracy, not stabilize other countries) If you aren’t cool with that then don’t do it. If you want to start moralizing about who you’re killing and what you are blowing up—go join the peace corps instead and hand out condoms and malaria pills to tribesmen in Africa.

Harsh but true Pete, Harsh but true.
Tell it how it is.
It's Time to get Wise
I’m just trying to be honest. I’ll never forget the first day of basic training we were told our job is to find the enemy and kill the enemy….period. Anything else is B.S. Worked for me.
The military is about being part of something that is bigger than yourself. (sometimes you won’t know the reasons behind choices but you have to accept them)
In the end its simple: Will you take a bullet for your brother, would you take the life of anyone that would hurt one of your brother in arms.
If the answer isn’t yes without hesitation than do not enlist.

Thanks, Pete. Those are my main concerns about the military, but I’m not sure if the Peace Corps are even worth it in the end.

I do believe in protecting those I care about, but not at the expense of an imperialistic state.

Time to introduce you to a sad reality: ALL states are imperialistic one way or another…OK maybe not Lichtenstein. I say so what. If the empire favors our country and people and we benefit GREAT.
Does this mean others in the world get used and abused? Yes—-answer better them than me/us. Life isn’t fair. If the tables were turned how do you think these poor down-trodden saps would behave toward us…a lot worse I promise.
I did a 4 year enlistment and would not trade the experience for the world. Traveling the world, friendships deeper than dudes you meet in the civilian world, not to mention the many technical trades you can get training and experience in.
If you can get past the philosophical stuff it can be worth it. You mentioned your parents wanting you to go in – is there a reason YOU want to go in?
I joined the Navy while the world was still somewhat sane –
mid 80’s and served my five years just before the Gulf War started. It does teach you valuable life skills such as teamwork, self discipline, fit ness and critical thinking under pressure.
I would say though that if you have moral objections to todays military agendas than perhaps enlisting in the coast/national guard would be a better option for you.
Lifes a bitch, but you don't have to marry one!
Let the women have the infantry. You go, gurrrrl!!

Really? Up until and even after World War I, the United States was an isolationist country that didn’t even get involved in the war until Roosevelt chopped away at our involvement.
We need to let other countries handle their own problems and stop being the policeman of the world.
The f~~~ing empire does not benefit our country in any way. If you call the erosion of our civil liberties and deaths of thousands of citizens at the expense of the War on Terror beneficial to our country, then how can you explain our failing economy and diminishing infrastructure? What about our failing education system and labor market?

If you don’t mind sharing, which branch did you enlist in?
The only reason for me to go to the military would be to advance my career as an entrepreneur and potentially acquire some skills that would benefit me in civilian life. However, I could just enroll in a tech school and acquire the same education without the bureaucracy. I feel that it’s just a way for my parents to exercise more control over me.

Thanks, Tuneout. I’ll most certainly look into either the Coast Guard or National Guard. I’m also not sure of the Air Force.

Really we weren’t an empire prior to WWI May I be so kind as to familiarize you with the Spanish American War 1898 which gave us a wide array of Spanish colonies and then the Philippine war, and the Mexican American War etc etc etc. Get the picture.
We were NOT an isolationist country…rather those wars catapulted us into the world as a power to be reckoned with. The guiding philosophy was Manifest Destiny.
You and everyone else in this country OWE our standard of living to the fact we’re an empire; anytime you want to give up the nice cushy place we live because empire offends you—move to some second rate hole–I hear Bulgaria is nice—wait! They had an empire turn of the century before last.

No, we were built on American ingenuity and innovation. Capitalism is the reason why we have one of the greatest standards of living in the world. Roosevelt ruined this by slowing building alliances until we were attacked at Pearl Harbor. If you haven’t noticed, we are not in the 19th century anymore. Imperialism was the only way to successfully expand a nation and had we not moved West, we would not have been able to sustain our young Union. However, as the world is right now, there is absolutely no reason why the American taxpayer should fund the military-industrial complex when it does not serve the people, but rather the corporations and banksters who profit off the destruction in other countries. We are able to thrive as a nation, but only if we focus on ourselves instead of expanding our empire.
Just to name a few empires that failed:
- Han China
Roman Empire
Imperial Japan
And that does not begin to scratch the surface of empires in history that were conquered or eroded by way of their own greed. You need to realize that imperial expansion does not help anyone in this stage in human evolution.
And I will not leave my country; just as YOU have the right to spout your neocon Warhawk drivel I have the right to voice my LEGITIMATE concerns over the state of the Union. Totalitarianism and imperialism fell after WW2 since the world did not need it anymore. We don’t OWE anyone ANYTHING. The military does not deserve respect for conquering other nations and siphoning oil and gold at the expense of American citizens.

Thanks, Jan. I’ll look into it.

Well, consider that those military ‘slaves’ of past generations fought, sacrificed and died so that you can freely express your thoughts and feelings on an open and public forum like this one without fear of retribution.
In any case, I would not recommend a military career if your heart is not in it. You’ll only become a burden to your supervisors and your fellow servicemen.
OTOH, unless you were born with a silver spoon shoved up your ass, you might want to get used to the idea that whatever you do in life, you will very much likely end up compromising your personal ideals/principles to a certain extent in order to earn or keep a pay check.
That’s just the way it is for most people anyway…
