Two members of an Oregon church that shuns traditional medicine in favour of prayer and anointing the sick with oils were arrested Monday in the death of their premature baby.

Sarah Mitchell, 24, and Travis Lee Mitchell, 21, are accused of murder and criminal mistreatment. They have been under investigation since March, when Sarah delivered twin girls at her grandparents’ home. One of the babies had breathing problems and died a few hours later.

Several members have been convicted of crimes for failing to seek medical care for their children, including Sarah Mitchell’s sister and brother-in-law. The deaths prompted Oregon lawmakers in 2011 to remove faith healing as a legal defence in murder and manslaughter cases.

The church drew criticism in 1998 after The Oregonian newspaper analyzed the deaths of 78 children buried in the church’s graveyard since 1955. At least 21 could have been saved by medical intervention, the newspaper found.

Parents pray to God to heal their infant baby. God kills baby instead. Parents accused of murder.

Many of the folks here who believe in the the ‘power of prayer’ really need to be careful of what to ask for. Your God seems to get a kick out of turning things around on you and f~~~ing you over hard.

That is cold. Real cold. I know c~~~s whom had warmer reactions than this to similar situations.

That explains your comments. But, it does not excuse your comments.

I suggest looking into the research Ian Stevenson and Jim Tucker on reincarnation. Unlike others they did not do hypnosis. They and their teams went around the world talking to young children about their claims of past lives and researching these claims. There are thousands of cases they did with evidence being found in many of the cases. The research is interesting and leans towards proof of an afterlife and reincarnation.

What are you going to do when you die and find out there is an afterlife? Nobody likes a skeptic.

Faith is expressed in many ways, many not condoned nor understood by normal citizens.

There are thousands of cases they did with evidence being found in many of the cases. The research is interesting and leans towards proof of an afterlife and reincarnation.

It is too easy to apply logic to a chain of events and say that it is God’s doing, just as it is easy to not inquire into what just occurred.

Not trying to start a religious argument, but I agree with Faust’s intimation, look around and explore life while you can. You may not have a second chance, then again, you just might.

Well it’s the State saying the parents should have taken the kid to a doctor. It’s the parent’s church saying that the death of the kid is God’s will. It’s seems pretty clear to me what just occurred but maybe I’m just not interpreting it properly…

I’m suppose to have a ‘warm’ reaction for a pair of retarded f~~~s who killed their own child because their bulls~~~ beliefs!?!

F~~~ that! Here we have a rock solid example of one of the dangers of religious belief and I am supposedly “cold” just for pointing it out?

But that’s typical Theist bulls~~~ on your part. Bash the Atheist as being “cold, offensive or arrogant” just for underscoring simple fact…

If you want to play that game, you are going to lose.

For example, in the U.S. there are over 60 MILLION murdered babies whom died by abortion for the beliefs of their mothers.

No, we have a display of the dangers of ignorance and arrogance when not asking for help when they should have.

But that’s typical Theist bulls~~~ on your part. Bash the Atheist as being “cold, offensive or arrogant” just for underscoring simple fact…

You made condescending jokes about a tragedy where a baby died. Nobody is laughing.

Well, no argument here on that from me…

a Christian research group has released the findings of a national survey containing a startling revelation: 70 percent of women who have abortions in the U.S. are Christians, and 23 percent of those women identify as Evangelical Christians.

Reincarnation is the exact OPPOSITE of what the Bible says. I was raised Christian and although I no longer practice religion, I fully support the religious rights of other people. If parents want to use alternative medicine or leave it up to whatever God they believe in, that’s their choice. In our society kids have no rights until they turn 18.

Just be sure to put that request in writing and have it notarized! I asked God for the same thing and ended up with ‘hemorrhoids’…

Reminds me of an old joke – man falls overboard a ship @ sea,he prays to God to save him, three ships pass by and ask if he needs help and each time the man replies,’No,God will save me’
So eventually he drowns and ends up face to face with his maker and asks Him why didn’t you save me?’
God replies ‘I sent three ships your way, what more did you need?’

In short, yes the parents were idiots cause we were meant to use our f~~~ing heads to solve our own problems on top of praying.

You mean you would support ‘religious rights’ even if it comes with a body count???

Though I won’t claim to understand why God does what he does, I believe in many cases an early death is more humane and merciful than a life of misery in this f~~~ed up world. However, we don’t have enough knowledge of how a human life will proceed to make that kind of judgment: our job is to take care of ourselves and others as best we can, especially children. If God wants to take them, I trust he has a good reason for it, and that they end up in a better place.

Well the parent’s church is saying that the child’s death is “God’s will”. So it seems likely that praying has absolutely zero effect if God is going to do what He wants to do anyway.

OTOH, the concept of prayer maybe tells us that God needs our help in order for Him to make up His mind (either that or He just likes us to stroke him). Whichever it is, it all sounds like bulls~~~ to me…

Trump, as stated by Blade, this is all that we can do and is the basis for faith. Whether that transcends into religion is indeed up to each individual, but the opportunity is always there.

Faith and trust, trust and faith.

This also works for ones fellow man. Trust in him and have faith that he always has your back.

I could never figure out the whole “We offer our prayers to God, and if it’s HIS will let it be done”, or something like that.

God’s OMNISCIENT, he already KNOWS what’s going to happen. So, Why pray ? Seems like a waste of time to me ???

Also, that OMNISCIENT God thingy kinda blows a couple holes in that “free will” idea, doesn’t it ??

Doesn’t LOGICAL THINKING get so CONFUSING once you start attempting to infuse God and Religion into it ?

I used to do tons of personnel evaluation reports in my military career. IMO God would get a solid FAIL on planning and use or resources.

An omniscient God would have, should have, known that a kid would die within a few weeks of birth and the parents would stand trial for murder. If I were such a God, I wouldn’t even have permitted the wife to become pregnant.

Claiming to not ‘understand’ God does not validate profoundly horrifically sick and convoluted absurd rationale…

Tower, your prayer is in the cue and the cue is being monitored and addressed. You made a bad assumption that your prayer was at the top of the cue. It was not and the cue is very, very big. Be patient, event ending events happen quite often when you have a 5 billion year time frame.
