Something doesn’t necessarily have to be illegal to be immoral. At the end of the day legislating morality is VERY difficult indeed; and probably should be avoided in a free society.
I would submit that all systems of law are in some sense an attempt to legislate morality. The law is designed to protect the individual and, by extension, society from what I would consider immoral and unethical acts (as I defined them earlier in the thread). This is why we have laws that address what people can and can not do to themselves as well as what they can and can not do to each others.
Now whether these codes of conduct are derived directly from the received wisdom of religious texts, from philosophical perspectives on the proper way to live, from scientific studies that prove this value will be produced by this act or from any number of arbitrary and well or ill intended sources is irrelevant… we still create laws in order to control people’s behavior in order to create a particular type of society and that is, in effect legislating morality (and ethics).
But to once again agree with Pete… a good person doesn’t need a law to tell them what is moral and ethical. They can feel it in the outcomes that reality produces based on their choices whether they’ve done right or wrong by themselves and others.
I’ve f~~~ed prostitutes and let me tell you never ONCE did I feel like a better person because of it, nor did I ever feel I had done the woman in question any favors by it, either. I don’t need a law or a book or a philosophy videoblog to tell me that what I did was immoral and unethical. I felt it in my heart and if you care about yourself, you will to.

You have to take her out to dinner, buy her drinks, and you might have to go on two or even three dates before you will have sex with her. If you add up the total costs of these three dates, it would be approxiately around 400 dollars.
What the f~~~?!?! That is insane. My dating routine has always been the same. Meet up at a bar, and when they’re informed I don’t drink, they have generally have no expectations of me buying drinks and often buy me water or a Coke. They also know beforehand I’m not looking for a relationship. I would estimate I have first date sex perhaps 40-50% of the time.
Second date? Another bar, but I pick a different one to create the illusion of a new experience. I usually buy my own drinks this time around to not feel like a total cheap skate.
For the life of me, I can’t understand why any guy would willingly blow hundreds of dollars on two or three dates. F~~~ing STOP.

I think most of the law is there to create order out of chaos. When the automobile was invented there were no laws for how and where you could drive. The laws were needed to create order out of the chaos…a lot of accidents. Who goes first at an intersection isn’t moral, it’s arbitrary. Perhaps we consider it a moral issue now, but it is only because we want to retain the order.
I would argue that murder is a crime for the reason of order as well. You can’t have a ordered society with people going around killing each other.

To me that just isn’t enough. I absolutely believe you’re sincere, but I don’t know that everyone feels the same as you do about it. Before I was married, I practiced abstinence…for the most part. The first time I messed with a girl, almost having sex, I felt absolutely horrible about that. I felt like my heart had turned black, I remember the feeling vividly. If the same incident happened today, I would feel nothing of the sort. Perhaps that means I was a moral man I’ve since become immoral? I don’t know.

In the 19th century the legal positivists stated a Law is: a command from a superior authority to a subordinate to either do/or refrain from doing and a failure to obey is followed by a sanction. The substantive morality of the act demanded or refrained from is independent of the fact it is a law. All that matters under this model for a law to be law is for someone to tell you to do/not do something and if you screw up its your ass. This is how one ends up with “laws” like the 1935 Nuremberg laws. Its a law but is it a moral law?
Of course the other theory is natural law. Natural law relies upon the use of reason to analyze human nature to deduce binding rules of moral behavior from nature’s or God. So a “law” contrary to natural law would be no law at all. So in that sense it is legislating morality but remember natural law is only just now coming back into vogue—it has a big uphill battle against the positivists.

Regardless of any individuals morality, nobody has the right to tell somebody else what they are allowed to do where they do no harm to any other person.
Would I partake in a legal prostitute? I leave that at a firm probably not. There are too many women willing to undercut that 3 date/400dollar threshold to even worry about finding an actual paid whore.

First of all, I think prostitution should be legalized, but it should be restricted to brothels or private residences. I am against street hookers because they make a public display of indecency that shouldn’t be seen by children. My idea of prostitution is: keep it unseen and quiet.
$400 for three dates? Are you kidding me? When I was a teenager, that kind of money would be enough for 4 months of dating girls. I went to a $3 matinee movie on my first date and the girl let me kiss her and squeeze her t~~~.
If you can find a woman that’s into you, you won’t have to spend a lot of money dating her. Sex won’t cost you more than the cost of a few beers from your refrigerator and some chips if you invite her over to your place to watch TV. However, getting married, paying child support, etc., will cost more than a prostitute (a reasonably-priced prostitute, that is).
If a guy wants sex but isn’t interested in having a long-term relationship with a girlfriend, or getting married, I suggest that he either find some “friends with benefits” or pay for a prostitute. If you do it illegally, there’s the risk of getting arrested or being overcharged.
