Seriously fellas, whatever happened to steel lawn furniture and folding chairs? I was just cleaning out to do some woodwork and rediscovered one that I have, it’s likely from the 1940’s or 50s’ all intact, strong and sturdy, and the slides work perfectly and are made of a good grade and thickness of steel, I can stand on it and it doesn’t wobble!

The paint is almost all gone and the bare surfaces aren’t even rusty, just a light surface rust here and there that will sand off without blasting. I decided I’m gonna paint it with some left over ceramic engine paint (AMC aquamarine blue) I painted a steel frame table with the stuff and it’s almost impossible to scratch!

Projected project cost: $0.00

Savings: Expensive paint with a limited shelf life being utilized for home furnishings incomparable durability and value. Irreplaceable by today’s minimum durability and quality standards. Long after plastic is cracked, faded, and worthless these relics will still be in one solid durable piece!

I estimate that 60% of the stuff in my house is second hand and at least another 30% was free or given to me. I’ve basically set myself a goal to fix these things if they ever break or lose functionality, within reason.

Today, you have to buy expensive brands with 10 year warranties to get the same quality supermarket items used to have in the 1960’s.

If you look at the inflation rate, that 40 Dollar chair from 1965 costs the same than that 450 Dollar “professional exhibition & trade fair” gear of today.

Today, these cheap chairs are dangerous. I have been “ejected” from such furniture very often and luckily never got hurt.
