My initial instinct is to say that this is just more BS. But the truth is, this are negotiations, this is exactly what men do and exactly what they should do. They are not asking for more money because they are women, they are asking for more money because they bring in the revenue. This is no different the player’s unions for men’s pro leagues who strike when they cannot come to an agreement with the owner’s. They are using the press to help get it done, but other union’s do the same thing. They don’t seem to be asking for above what the market will bear, and they are not asking the government to give them special vagina treatment.

That said, Hope Solo is involved. The woman needs to be in jail for domestic violence. And again, the equal pay angle is a big turn off. Just say you’ll all walk if you don’t get what you want. Your gender is irrelevant, remember?

    Ok. Then do it.

No equal pay for unequal play.

They just handed us a slogan against their silly “wage gap” lie.

Once they bring in equal revenue they can demand more. If they are already doing this then more power to them, until then keep trying but don’t just expect to be paid the same if you aren’t able to do the same.

I don’t care about women’s football so I won’t read the article, I just hope they aren’t pretending that they are performing the same as men and pulling as much revenue.

According to the article, they could justifiably say they bring in more revenue then the men, although it’s difficult to say since some buckets are mixed men/women and the possibility that a men’s match has more to do with the popularity of the opponent then the US team. For example, US vs Mexico in Houston will get way more revenue from Mexican fans then US fans.

To me, the important aspect to this is that they are not asking the government to force higher pay, they are threatening to walk out. That’s negotiation, that’s the way it’s supposed to be done.

    Ok. Then do it.

Yeah, my first thought on this was have them play the men’s team, do or die, for the money. But if they do bring in more money, then they deserved to be paid.

That said, here is the other angle to this story. Men play in the MLS, the Barkley’s Premier League, and leagues throughout the world. The top men’s players can make $10 – $15 million a year or more. So, if you don’t pay them, they won’t play for their country. The women’s team on the other hand doesn’t have those high dollar opportunity costs associated with being on the team.

If a guy says “F~~~ you, I’ll just play in my own league” he makes a tremendous amount more money. If a woman says the same thing, she’ll make about the same but lose out on endorsement possibilities.

How that works out into who is worth more is a little more complicated than Judy and her teammates want you to think it is.

EDIT: The US women’s team brought in $20 million more in revenue in 2015 vs. the men’s team. However, the Women’s World Cup was in 2015, while the Men’s World Cup was in 2014. Apples to oranges comparison.

This is, however, the best case that women have ever had in a wage discrimination case. That much I believe.

I’ll just ignore them, honestly female sports is not entertaining due to competition. And to top that I just find out that the women’s tennis ball is different from a man’s thanks to Serena Williams “hear me roar” tantrum, now I dont look at her as a top tier athlete like I use to. I swear all this women crap is a scam one way or another. The NBA is bearing the burden of the WNBA because they didnt hold frame when trying to shut it down for being unprofitable.MLS Learn from others mistakes and not your own…..

Equal skill means equal pay. Equal TV ratings and merchandise sales/ticket sales means equal pay. They just want equal outcome while not having anything equal to offer when it comes to the men’s team. The inequality here is them wanting equal pay.

This call for equal pay is like calling for equal prices, it has all the sanity of demanding a Rolls Royce be priced equivalent to a Fiat! A used dented high mileage rotted with dead fish in the back seat Fiat!

Why not just have a soccer league. Not men nor female.

The best players get on the team and the big contact.

I think there were some females in the NFL.

Do they bring in equal money to their male counterparts? Or like in Australia where female cricketers are wanting equal pay by way of siphoning off money from the male cricket team?

And when are women going to start playing more sets for their pay being equal to men?

    Equal skill means equal pay.

I disagree. It’s a factor, but it is quite common for equally skilled professionals to be paid differently.

Equal TV ratings and merchandise sales/ticket sales means equal pay. They just want equal outcome while not having anything equal to offer when it comes to the men’s team. The inequality here is them wanting equal pay.

They are not saying they deserve equal pay because they are women, but because they are bringing more or greater revenue. They are saying that they’ve been paid less because they are women, but that is not the same.

I don’t think women’s skill level needs to be the same as men to be entertaining. I don’t think college football is as skilled as professional, yet it is entertaining. At the same time, I find most women’s sports to be boring. I’ll also admit that quite often the appeal is less about the competitiveness and more about watching attractive women in motion.

I do not think women athletes should be paid the same as males by default. I also don’t think make models should be paid the same as female models by default.

    Ok. Then do it.

I think pretty much all men’s league would allow women if they can compete at the same level as men. It’s happen in auto racing. It’s happened in golf. It’s happened in football at the lower levels. Heck, it happens in youth sports all the time.

In general, leagues will have restrictions on men/women that are considered overqualified (age, height, weight, gender, no disabilities, etc) in order to keep the league competitive.

    Ok. Then do it.

“They are not saying they deserve equal pay because they are women, but because they are bringing more or greater revenue.”

They are SAYING that, but they are lying. They are comparing 2015 men’s revenue vs. 2015 women’s revenue. But 2015 was a World Cup year for the women, whereas 2014 was the World Cup year for the men. And a year in which they won the World Cup, so it’s the single best year they have probably EVER had.

A better comparison would be 2015 for the women vs. 2014 for the men. I’m assuming they didn’t make that comparison because it wouldn’t have shown them being underpaid.

I’m actually all for women being paid equal pay for equal work. But equal work doesn’t mean showing up as often or working as hard. It means equal “production”, however that is defined. I would be much more sympathetic if they actually earned more in 2015 than the men did in 2014, but they chose to make a different comparison.

Another good point TaxGuy. I did not consider that.

I would not say I’m for equal pay for equal work, at least not through government intervention. If you are worth it, then you should be able to negotiate for it. If you don’t know your worth, or are unwilling to seek other employment if they won’t pay you, that is on you. That is what every man has to deal with.

    Ok. Then do it.

OK, not to beat this to death, but I’m an accountant with OCD when it comes to type of s~~~. So I found the financial statements for the US soccer team online. The numbers are actual for 2014 and 2015 and budgeting for 2016 and 2017.

Over those 4 years, the men’s team is budgeted to pull in $70.4 million. The women’s team is budgeted to gross $38.5. Even with a large projected vs. budgeted amount in 2016 that I would assume means they think they will do well in the Olympics, the women total out at $54.5 million. So, that’s either 55 cents on the dollar, or 77 cents on the dollar.

If they are making only about 35 cents on the dollar, then I agree that they are underpaid. Looks to me like they are worth about 2/3 of a man.

    Happy now Judy?

The only women’s sport that could compete with men’s equivalent on revenue – my guess would be Beach Volleyball

The bottom line is that people don’t pay to watch women’s sports. If they did, there would be a case to pay for it.

It’s like comparing a stadium filling band to a club filling band. They just don’t have the same fan base to justify the same contract.

Beach volleyball is my favorite women’s sport. They would have to generate more revenue than men’s beach volleyball too.

I like to watch NBA games. WNBA is f~~~ing boring. Men’s NBA basketball is so much more physical than WNBA. Let ’em whine all they want.

Men are physically stronger and mentally tougher so they will always be a notch above in sports where those are at a premium which is nearly all of them.

Curling may be a sport where women and men are pretty much on equal terms. How long would a woman last in an ice hockey game?
