I have have distant cousin in Germany who said the same thing – after Merkel’s colossal failure, and they admit it was a colossal failure. Then they forwarded that to me.

I said “Did you idiots have your ears open during the inauguration? Trump said “America FIRST”. RIGHT??? So how the f~~~ can a GERMAN have a problem with the concept of closing/pausing borders to Muslim immigrants after all you’ve been complaining about(!!) and “Deutschland Über Alles in der Weld” (Germany Over Everything Else in the World) are the lyrics of your National Anthem!!”

“Go have a beer & Shnitzel with some sauerkraut”, I told them. Then you’ll learn it’s still a democracy and you’re free to go waste your afternoon drinking beer and eating Schnitzel. And while you’re doing that…. think on the bombing of Dresden.

They must not be thinking clearly. Staggering.

    “IT’S THE END OF DEMOCRACY!!”

Calm the f~~~ down. It’s the start of the end for democrazy though….

Someone wiser than me is certainly going to explain that the US was never a true democracy.
    I think it’s called a plurocracy.

I have heard from several (more knowledgeable people than me) that the US was never a democracy. Not that it’s a bad thing. It was just a misuse of the term. Truthfully, I am pretty ignorant when it comes to politics and currency.

    I think it’s called a plurocracy.

Plutocracy (from Greek πλοῦτος, ploutos, meaning “wealth”, and κράτος, kratos, meaning “power, dominion, rule”) or plutarchy, is a form of oligarchy and defines a society ruled or controlled by the small minority of the wealthiest citizens.

    Kudos Hitman! Nailed it.

The United States was never intended – nor was it formed – as a democracy.
Is was always meant to be a Republic. It is in your Constitution – Article 4 Section 4

“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.”

I was harsh with them because we’re close for the most part and say anything to each other, but they also have daughter who withdrew from the family for a couple of years and married a muslim which they STRONGLY objected to. Not even because he was Muslim – but rather, because he influencing her to withdraw from her family. There were long periods of no contact and she just didn’t “report in” like a family night expect. No Christmas together anymore either. And she got VERY thin.

For at least 10 years this topic was present in every conversation and complaining about the political landscape… and then I got a newspaper clipping + their opinion on what’s going on the US. ( Are you kidding me with this? ) . They would also yammer on about being grateful for every last scrap including your basic freedom and liberty.

Now they are behaving like the White House has become Moussolini, Hussein or Ceasar’s Palace. ( Not the casino ).

Trump just got rid of state-funded abortions as part of “healthcare” and I would imagine if the state paid for my condoms – and then suddenly DIDN’T anymore – I still wouldn’t think it was “the end of democracy”. It’s more like the end of lunacy.

“A REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS”.

Almost 40 years ago, it was actually a question on the Hollywood Squares – which comedian Paul Lynde answered correctly. Nobody kicked up a fuss at the time.

In a true democracy, citizens (or those that qualify) vote directly on legislation and executive actions. We obviously don’t have that hear. We have a republic, or representative democracy. We vote on representatives who legislate and such on our behalf. In other words, that are suppose to be listening to us and acting as they believe we want them to act.

Our system, and much of the world it seems, have corrupted the republic concept, sometimes it was unavoidable. The influence of money is the one everyone complains amount. Due to large populations, it takes money to gain the support and vote of the population, and corporate lobbyists are influencing with money. Another is that government has necessarily been so complicated that it becomes difficult to tell what a politician is doing and whether or not it’s actually good or not. Spin is very high. Then there ‘sports mentality’ of the average citizen. So many support their rep or political party rather blindly, without considering whether the politician is actually helping them in anyway.

Most importantly, in my opinion, the original democracies, and our original government, did NOT allow every citizen the right to vote. You had to be a male adult and land owner. Although that sounds unfair, it ensured that only those who contributed to the government, financially or otherwise, made decisions for the government. Now, you still need to be an adult, but you do not need to be male, own land, or even pay taxes. In other words, those that do not contribute to the success, financially or otherwise, of the country have a voice in what happens with the government. That creates an environment where a politician can gain power and votes simply by taking from those that have and giving to those that have not.

So, we’ve never had a democracy, although we’ve had democratic principles. We still have democratic principles in many ways, but it’s been corrupted to the point where it doesn’t look like it much anymore. I am doubtful that the original greeks or the US founding fathers would be happy with what they see. Of course, modern America would dismiss their views without the thought, on an account they were all racist, bigoted, misogynist pigs.

    Ok. Then do it.

A country can be a demoratic republic.
A republic is a state, with a democratic elected goverment+president in which the electorate understands itself as the ruler/owner of the sovereign power.

Its not a republic anymore if the elected goverment doesnt keep its promises and does not what the people want it to do.
So Trump is restoring the republic.

I dont understand what they are trying to say with” the democracy is in danger”.

It was nice to crawl out from under my rock and contribute to Hellary’s ass beating, but the Trumps look up at gold leaf ceilings and there’s no way they can possibly feel the suffering, to me it’s just another Revolution of the political merry go round where a new group have a stab at enriching themselves, when in fact they’re enriching themselves. I’ve lived my live in the trenches where the political sewer water flows and stinks to high heaven. I can’t give a f~~~ because I have no f~~~s left to give, I’m f~~~ bankrupt so NFGiven.

Ya know what? This coming Thursday November 23rd and for now on, it’s Nof~~~sgiving Day instead of Thanksgiving Day! F~~~ with me.

I still haven’t figured out what to do with Christmas…

Hearing people complain about Trump turning our country into a right wing fascist nation is funny, I WISH we were that lucky.

It seems to me that the actual meaning of words like fascist, communist, racist, bigot, etc are no longer really that important. They are negative words, so if you have negative view of someone, go ahead and call them names and labels regardless of whether the description fits or not. It can all be spun anyway.

    Ok. Then do it.

The USA has always been a democracy.
The better question is if the USA has ever been a Republic, other than on paper.
I believe it hasnt been one for decades at least.
Under Kennedy it was one probably, and before that I dont know exactly, because Im not so well informed about all presidents of the past.

Its a republic if the master of the government is the electorate.
If the masters of the government are the richest/most influential people and not the electorate, its not a republic. It would be more of a plutocracy in disguise.

Democracy is just the voting system.

Thank goodness we’re NOT a democracy… can you imagine if everything was up to a vote and any corn-fed idiot could walk in and give themselves whatever they wanted?

They do this s~~~ a lot in California… put things up to a referendum and the people vote and then the government has to figure out how to give it to them. It’s like letting the kids run the pre-school.

No, we’re much better off as a republic with a representative democracy. We may not agree with how accurately they represent us at times, but it’s better than taking a f~~~ing head count every afternoon to see what our national policies and laws ought to be.
