We’re either an “echo chamber”
or we’re “bickering too much”.Notice how both narratives are being pushed tenaciously and endlessly every so gently.
The objective of this is pretty clear:
We have to shut the f~~~ up and go back to the plantation..We’re not an echo chamber in the sense that we don’t allow differences. I’ve seen plenty of disagreement over things around here and most of us get along just fine. We are an echo chamber in the sense that the same topics get repeated often. I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing. We get new members all the time and they have to go through those topics as well. It would be easy to tell them to just read through the archive, but they deserve to say what they have to say about the topic and experienced members can reply to the topic with perhaps even more wisdom than they had in the past. Also, being such a diverse group, topics related to women and feminism are about the only topics that everyone can contribute to. I will occasionally start a thread on one of my hobbies, but they never get more than a few replies at the most. When I see someone else post a topic about their hobby in the “cool s~~~ & fun stuff” category, I’m happy to read it, but I probably won’t know enough about the topic in order to reply.

Anonymous3I enjoyed the wikipedia definition of “echo chamber”. Not exactly what I had in mind, though.
In news media an echo chamber is a metaphorical description of a situation in which information, ideas, or beliefs are amplified or reinforced by transmission and repetition inside an “enclosed” system, where different or competing views are censored, disallowed, or otherwise underrepresented.
My interpretation of the “echo chamber” is that you have your own words back, just like an “echo”. Also, there is no way a physical “echo” can censor anything. The direct interpretation of what is a real and physical “echo chamber” is actually that you get back everything you say.
Quite the opposite from the definition of wikipedia, isnt it?
So, what we got here is a perfect example of a technique known as “reframing”, where you get a word or concept and you translate it to something else. It gets to a point where it is a common cultural reference in a country, but nobody else understands it.
That is the problem here. In my country we dont use that expression. This technique is very common. Let us use the expression “Peter Pan” as an example, it changes from a children’s book character to a derrogative reference to a male behavior.
The problem is the automatic nature of assumptions. Nobody wants to be called a “Peter Pan”, as everyone knows its derrogative. Yet, how many people think by themselves about the reasoning behind the “Peter Pan” reference? Is pursuing happiness is a bad thing? Who says what is growing up really about? Why is important to take responsibilities?
There are to many assumptions and social conditioning. There are to many dogmas at play.Programming and conditioning is all over the place.
To describe a website about a specific thing as an echo chamber is stupid. Something can only be an echo chamber when there are no conflicting ideas discussed; but we talk about feminism and ask “what really is equality?” all the time.
We all have different ideas here because there is no one way to go your own way otherwise it wouldn’t be your own way.The only way “a program” I’m making could be an echo chamber is if I forced it on everyone else and blocked out outside ideas.
No, nothing could be further from the truth; I’m emancipating myself from the Black Iron Prison, the State of Mind, Culture, Societal Preconceptions, the False Self, F~~~ those ghosts! My mind is open, this is not a chamber, it is an open space, a landscape, a solar-system, a galaxy, a universe- it is open space.
