. . . It is better to be alive.”

From Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket.

"Once you’ve taken care of the basics, there’s very little in this world for which your life is worth deferring." -David Hansson. "It’s not when women are mean or nasty that anything is out of the ordinary. It’s when they are NICE to you that you have to be on high alert..." -Jackinov.

Because I have not been given evidence that opposes basic logic. I knew nothing before I got here, therefore I can only assume I will know nothing when I leave for I needed this form to know anything at all.

This world is 4.5 billion years old and the universe is nearly 14 billion years old. Now, consciousness is everything and before you were born this world experienced many species that went through evolution and even passed, like the dinosaurs, to give way to new ones like mammals. Prior to being born you had no recollection, memory, thoughts, intelligence, etc so relatively speaking it will be the same when you die. Even spirituality is a matter of consciousness. What Joe is saying is that your mind will rot just as your body and without it, it’s lights out.

Evolution is all around you my friend even among the races of man from Alpines, Dinarids, Meds, Nordids, etc etc.

Truth is they REALLY DO believe in a hereafter even though they claim they don’t—Let’s use some of THEIR VAUNTED logic to explain:

You know nothing before you are born
You know nothing after you die

OK then why not spare yourself years and years of misery and suffering unnecessarily and just kill yourself. If the atheist are right then you lose nothing by killing yourself and GAIN by avoiding misery. But we don’t see atheists killing themselves Even that vegetable Steven Hawkins slowly decomposing into a drooling blob—why does he chose to “endure” when he can be “free”?

You always can recognize a fake atheist because they are still clinging to life no matter how much it sucks.

Guys, this quote is not to be taken literally regarding consciousness after death.

It’s a quote for us, the living, to be thankful for what we have.

With all the s~~~ in the vortex, and for some of us with thoughts of suicide, it’s good to be reminded that it’s still better to be alive.

Reading funny and entertaining posts and comments by Theists is what keeps me going. I live just to hear what they’ll say next..

Your argument is actually much more suited to be posed at someone with Religion, as in if there is a heaven and or 72 virgins or whatever why not kill yourself to get there because life here is so miserable to you? See, I don’t see life as miserable, you just projected that onto me to better suit your argument. Also, if I believe life here and now as I know it is all there is wouldn’t I cling to it no matter what? The foundations of your argument rests upon marshmallows lost at sea.

In the end what you propose is nothing beyond speculation, hope, and man made stories that have historically been used to justify sending other men to their graves.

I submit for consideration that the truth is likely that yes, life is tough for many, loss of loved ones is tough for many, and Religions throughout history are just made up stories and beliefs that help many to deal with reality via fantasy.

Don’t forget the eco-freaks. They never follow through, either.

The ‘earth-mothers’ always have more kids than average, and the eco-freaks ‘have’ to stay alive in order to educate the rest of us.

I kinda see life as an obligation to future generations. I mean as long as people keep procreating, our species will continue. I figure that we are obligated to make the world, in any small way that we can, a better place for the people who come after us. That’s what others, who came before us, tried to do anyway.

My immediate goal is to stay alive long enough to help vote Turdeau out of office. Hell, that at least should be eligible for a Pulitzer prize for the advancement of humanity or something…

I am an atheist and I don’t understand Pistol Pete’s logic but here is a stab at a reply:

1.) Life isn’t misery, its actually quite pleasant. I enjoy reading, watching sunsets and movies playing my guitar etc… why would I want to prematurely end my enjoyment of these activities just because my consciousness will end at death?
2.) You seem to be adopting a hedonistic definition of value (don’t take offense to the hedonistic reference its a technical philosophical term) but I might not ascribe to this definition of value. For example I may see value in things that are unpleasant, for example fighting cancer or the NAZIs (like Dunkirk) or whatever, none of these activities are pleasurable in themselves but I may see value in the struggle and want to keep living for that reason. (Stoicism) I may not see life as a constant pleasure cruise but rather as an honourable fight against the pain and misery of life and see value in how I carry myself through these struggles.

As an Atheist, I very comfortable knowing that there’s no afterlife. It doesn’t bother me in this least. However, to imply that Atheism should make me suicidal is just f~~~ing twisted. I’m really not even sure how you were able made that stretch.

However, I think one of the things that defines Theists is their fear that the Atheists are right (that there is no afterlife) or there is and that they might end up in Hell. I’m bettin’ this is what would make a Theist terrified of dying when it doesn’t really bother the Atheist so much.

Or worst case scenario for the Theist, what if you worshiped the wrong god? Then you’re really f~~~ed no matter how good of a life you think you had led…

Interestingly enough there is actually a name for Pistol Pete’s argument, its called Shigalyovism, named after Shigalyov from Dostoyevsky’s the possessed, an atheist who believes true atheism requires suicide and I believe in the novel he starts a suicide cult.
