What Is Reality?
Neuroscientist David Eagleman explores the human brain in an epic series that reveals the ultimate story of us, why we feel and think the things we do. This ambitious project blends science with innovative visual effects and compelling personal stories, and addresses some big questions. By understanding the human brain, we can come close to understanding humanity.
Dr. Eagleman’s exciting multi-disciplinary approach has earned him respect — and fans — across the globe. He will take viewers on a fascinating journey through our inner cosmos, exploring the brain’s neural landscape while asking profound questions like “What is reality?” and “Who is in control?” He will also look at the darker side of humanity in order to understand why the brain drives us towards certain actions and behaviors.
“In a cubic centimeter of brain tissue there are as many connections as stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Somehow our thoughts, our hopes, and our dreams are contained in these three pounds of wet biological material,” said Dr. Eagleman. “I hope that when viewers watch THE BRAIN, they will take away the love of science and wonder that make us all unique.
“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” – Albert Einstein
You must own a better Crystal ball than I“Reality” is just one specific way the human mind processes information that enters our five senses. Our eyes can only pick up a certain bandwidth of light energy, just like our ears can only pick up a certain bandwidth of sound energy. There is no universal answer to this “reality”. Our mind distorts the incoming information based on our biology and conditioning. What is “reality” to one person is not the same “reality” to someone else, consciously and sub-consciously.
Trying to find the answer to this “reality” is just like trying to “jump out” of ourselves/consciousness. The answer does not exist, for it is an illusion. In other words, the observer observing the observer observing the observer etc. It is infinite.
The reason why we suffer is because we make things that are insignificant, example; marriage and “love”, into something significant.
A tranquil mind is neither happy nor sad, it is uninfluenced by external conditions.
Perception vs. Reality is like “Personality” vs. Character. How things are seen by others vs. how things actually are. One is easily applied, can vary depending on mood or interpretation, and washes off easily too. The other doesn’t.
Thats’ the way I “perceive” it.
And in a way, perception is everything.why we feel and think the things we do.
Not far from where I live is a park where they sometimes have booths on weekends. There are hokey “energy healers” set up with chairs who close their eyes and send you “spiritual healing” while holding an outstretched arm with their palm facing you – as you sit across from them with your eyes closed taking it all in.
Another is a guy with a recording device, camera and table asking random people “why you believe the things you do?”. These are belief-based and concerned with perception. One would need to perceive “energy healing” as legitimate, otherwise you’re gonna start laughing.
If I say “the moon is a lifeless rock with no atmosphere” that’s factual and true statement based in reality. Except, some people might perceive that to be a “negative” statement.
“What is reality?” and “Who is in control?”
Einstein said reality is an illusion. But I also heard someone say “control is an illusion” which actually makes more immediate sense. Apparently the human brain can’t even deal with processing the reality of the vast black empty void of space without going mad. You can freak yourself out just thinking long enough about it.
If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got. This kind of stuff fascinates me and because it runs for nearly an hour i will put it on my to watch list .
What fascinates me is one’s perception of time . This i beleave has played a problem with my mind today along with some high end trauma witch has now left me broken from what i once was .
I had my iq tested when i was young and scored an amazing number for my age . All to do with that my treatment as a child and story is unbelievable and i will leave it there . Used
I once had a mind that i could actually describe places and events right back to before i was even 2 . A mind like a journal . An overload of circuitry.
A simple way is thinking back ten or 20 years ago only seems like yesterday .
Say you drive the same path on a road with no traffic . One of those days seems to take longer than percieved than the day before .
Time and life goes by in the blink of an eye . The time of your death is there waiting . Who will be there on your last breath . What has brought you and them to that point of time .
Time is ones perception in life while the hand on the clock moves fast .
Time is all just a program from birth .
Funny how been away from people the meaning of time becomes forgotten
THE PLANTATION HAS NOW TURNED INTO THE KILLING FIELDS . WOMAN ARE NOW ROLLING CAMBODIAN STYLE .
What fascinates me is one’s perception of time .
What is the difference between the past, present and future? What delay…1 milli second…1 nano second…1 pico second? If we “zoom” in to this 1 pico second, time will “slow down” and “appear” to be soooo looooong, just like a high speed camera with a super super high frame rate. The past, present and future all converge into oneness. In other words, the “present” fluctuates/changes infinitely. Hence, “time” is an illusion.

I could remember the house I lived in when I was 2, almost photographic. I am 33 years old now.

It kinda weird, my perception of this is the exact opposite. When I think back to my early childhood, it seems like a long long time ago.

Remembering the past or dwelling on the future, that’s all we’ve got .. since time doesn’t stop there can be no present reality. The process of signing a bank check, halfway through the signature, your first name shown in ink is already part of history and your second name yet to appear is the future. The momentary process of putting the pen and ink to paper is constantly in time flux between past and future so there can be “no present or now.” Shortening the timespan to try and reach the “knife-edge” of time between past and future is impossible with shortening and shortening intervals add infinitum.
In conclusion, since now is impossible, there is no present. With no present, there can be no reality .. only memories and future dreams. Memories and dreams also don’t exist because by the time you have them .. time itself has moved on. Thinking about the past requires electrochemical impulses traveling between synapse which are past history before the impulses can even reach a critical inflection or tipping point large enough for cognitive processing to be recognized by the brain. In other words, by the time you have a thought .. that thought and everything associated with it .. is already ancient cortical history. There is no present, no reality, only history and the future unknown .. which when you contemplate is already history. Thoughts don’t exist in real time .. all thoughts are history. By the time you see the eclipse .. it’s already long gone. It’s effect is past history.
There also is no history .. because the reality required to create that history never existed. We shortened and shortened time trying to find the now and that interval just kept getting shorter. No history is possible without the present, you can’t have a past without a “now” .. therefore .. nothing exists … except awalts.Apparently the human brain can’t even deal with processing the reality of the vast black empty void of space without going mad. You can freak yourself out just thinking long enough about it.
That right there Keymaster is my greatest inspiration in this life. When I’m at work during my weekly graveyard shifts I stare at the stars in the sky and envision the infinite vastness of space within which this orb called earth spins freely forever stuck in orbit around a very plain star 🌟 our sun!
Where does it ends? where does it begins? where is this endless universe located? perhaps within another endless universe?
You must own a better Crystal ball than Iendless universe?
A multiverse.

Yes! Our minds are limited. “Something” limited trying to perceive “something” infinite, will surely drive one mad.
A tranquil mind is neither happy nor sad, it is uninfluenced by external conditions.
I beleave the heart and mind are one just seperated as two organs in the body .
When your real sad and heart broken time appears to go slow .
When your having a really good time it appears to go fast .
So i guess our emotions play a part in the perception of time .
F~~~ where is tower he has built a time machine . Lol .
THE PLANTATION HAS NOW TURNED INTO THE KILLING FIELDS . WOMAN ARE NOW ROLLING CAMBODIAN STYLE .

You may get a kick out of this as much as I did.
“If the moon were only one pixel” on your computer screen…. how “big” is space? It’s quite a mind f~~~. Enjoy!

If space never ends then that means what ever you can imagine is true . Then if this same copy of what we are doing this moment is happening out there does that mean that there is an end to space that circles back on its self . A loop in space and time .
Star wars happening this moment in a galaxy far away . Lol

Thanks, yep that’s a great way of grasping the scale of it all. Now when pondering about the vastness of the universe we have to use light years as the measuring unit! millions of light years isnt much out there! Therefore What we are witnessing are images from the past! Fascinating! I never stop being in awe whenever I look up at a cloudless night sky 🌙 🌟
note:
it sure beats thinking about tunas all the time 😉You must own a better Crystal ball than IThats why i am f~~~ed in the head now . I knew it , i knew it was just me . Lol
What are you talking about Blade? sanity isn’t what everyone claim it to be! anyway that video introduces us to how our brains construct a very personal reality. I watched the whole thing and learned a lot about stuff that our brain does that I wasn’t even aware of!
You must own a better Crystal ball than IThats why i am f~~~ed in the head now . I knew it , i knew it was just me . Lol
I thought I am f~~~ed in the head, lol….because most people use the saying…time flies…
But you are right about being broken vs having fun as time slows and speeds up, respectively.
A tranquil mind is neither happy nor sad, it is uninfluenced by external conditions.

But you are right about being broken vs having fun as time slows and speeds up, respectivelyAn hour spent on a torture table vs an hour bathing in the sun sure doesn’t feel the same! I was really sick a while ago with intense pain for 48 hrs with little sleep! I can tell you that I have lived what seemed like a whole week during those 2 days! not about to forget it!
You must own a better Crystal ball than II beleave time to play apart of the meaning of life

Interesting. That is the exact opposite of what spiritual teaching teaches.

Anonymous42I don’t know how this thread got stuck on that cracked vessel called time. Some like myself that have peered through some of those cracks, but that’s a different story.
Reality Versus Perceived Reality
I’ll put this kindergarten simple;
Reality: MGTOW; non denial of actual events, cultural mindset, and discriminatory hypocrisy.
Perceived Reality;
1. Narcissistic perception. (C~~~).
2. Objective rationalization. Bend reality to fit fantasy through the art of hopeless optimism. (blue pill)
3. MGTOW. Accepting the things we cannot change and acting on wisdom to know the difference. (course, direction, hope).
