Anonymous0Okay, job 2. But, also apply for the Ford job.
There is a reason why they pay 20$ an hour. And it’s also contract. You don’t get benefits until you put in 3 years, then you get full time. But until then you have probably more than 90% chance of getting fired or let go. I’m almost 31 and my knees are not in the best shape..can’t imagine what it will be like when I’m 40-50 and beyond.
Since you put it this way, I’m thinking job # 2 is looking better and better.
In a World of Justin Beibers Be a Johnny Cash
So get hurt for 20 or keep all your original parts for 13? I know you want the money, but it may only be for a few months. 13 for a year beats 20 for a month…..
Good luck brother and great post.
Jesus tittyf~~~ing Christ. $20 an hour working for Toyota and screwing up your body so you can’t work in the future? F~~~ THAT! You’d be better off trying to SELL the damned cars rather than make them. I’ve always worked my brain hard rather than my body hard, and I’ll be very grateful I did that when I’m in my 50’s. You’ve only got one body. Don’t throw it away.
If you could live off $13 per hr – DEFINITELY take this
Else, take the $20 per hr.If you get seriously hurt with $20 paying job, is it still worth it? however we all have different situations so it comes down to where you’re at in this moment of your life and how much risk you wanna take.
Don't let defeat, defeat you; Let defeat be your greatest teacher.
I’d go for the money. I worked labor jobs from 18-31 and am no worse for wear for it. It even kept me in better shape than average even while during lazy periods of my life where I wasn’t hitting the gym.
Back and forth from day to night shift? They wonder why they have f~~~ing injuries? It’s a surefire recipe for disaster on or off the job, your biological clock will be shooting springs and gears from every opening! F~~~ THAT!
I do rotating shifts now…12 hour shifts and it flips every week from nights to days. Its really not a big deal. When I’m going in for my first night shift on a set of nights I usually just take a nap for a couple hours before going in and have no problem staying up all night. When I’m coming off nights and getting back on to days I’ll just go home and get like 5 hours sleep, then try to go to sleep a few hours earlier each night til I go back in for a day shift. Even if I sleep like s~~~ before my first day shift its not a huge deal, I just go home and crash super early that night because I’m beat and I’m good for the week after that.
Its not for everyone though. I don’t ever drink caffeine to stay up while a lot of the guys I work with drink coffee like its water. I also have no trouble passing the f~~~ out in broad daylight, while again other guys I work with set up dark rooms in their house and try to block out the windows and stuff.
And the shifts go from 6:15 am-3:45 pm, and then they switch from mornings to evening-night shift.
I do shift work, and two of the best things about it are built in overtime and shift differentials. If they have you on for 9.5 hours a day do you get 7.5 hours of overtime a week plus shift differentials on the off shifts? 7.5 hours of overtime @ 30 bucks an hour is an extra 225 a week…that is more than 2 8 hours days at the 13 an hour job just in overtime.
Job #1 is a 9 1/2 hour day
I do 12s now. Plus I’m expected to be in 15 minutes early for turnover from the prior shift, which they automatically pay me time and a half for. I also have a 30 minute drive each way. All said and done my typical day(if I’m on day shift) I get up at 4am, and usually out the door a little before 5, and don’t get home until 6:30pm. It seems like it sucks ass to hear that part of it but I’m on a 5 week rotation, and while a 9-5er 5 day a week type job works 25 out of every 35 day period, I work 18 out of every 35 day period(4 of which I’m not on shift and only work 8 hour days so it averages out to 40 hours per week). The long days are definitely worth pretty much an extra week off every month. I’m usually an overtime whore too and pick up all the extra days they offer me…so even if I pick up an extra 4 shifts in a month, I walk away with an extra 48 hours of overtime pay and still have off more days than most full time workers get.
CST is right. what benefit would it be to be paid 1 million dollars a year if you must spend every waking moment engaged in work? None for you; but plenty for your heirs and assignee’s when you croak from a heart attack—and do those little miserable pukes really deserve to live well on your money and hard work? F~~~ them!
I see things a bit different. If I had to devote 100% of my life for a year for a million dollar salary, I’d say f~~~ yeah. I’d do it for like 3 years then retire. A full time work year, 40 hours a week, is 2080 hours. Let’s say the average person does this for 40 years before retiring…that is 83,200 hours of their life they spend working. 24x365x3 would only be 26,280(but realistically you can’t actually work 24 hours a day…so even if you worked 16 a day…your actual time on the job would be 1/3 of that). I wouldn’t care how s~~~ty the job is…I’d rather have 3 years of utter s~~~ if it got me out of 37 of working.
Now…I realize you were just throwing a number out to make a point…but let’s compare the 13 dollar an hour job to the 20. I’m a pretty frugal dude in a high cost of living area, but let’s say I need roughly 1500 a month to get by. 13 bucks an hour, 40 hours a week, for a 4 check week would leave me with 2080…or roughly 500 bucks to save each month. The 20 dollar an hour job would pay me 3200 a month, or, roughly 1700 a month to save each month. Maybe that 1000 a month doesn’t seem like an astronomical amount of money, but when that 1000 a month is a 200% increase to your savings rate…its pretty f~~~ing huge. Yeah I didn’t factor taxes in…but realistically if you could live off the 13 an hour and the extra 7 would be straight up bank, you could toss it into a retirement account and avoid taxes on the extra income.
My ultimate goal is to save a bundle of cash and live off dividends. The 20 dollar an hour job is going to get me to that goal 3x as fast as the 13 dollar an hour job.
hey here is another point for #2 that everyone else may have overlooked, 2nd shift kicks ass! i live at a similar latitude to you and it’s pretty sweet in the winter time when it’s dark by 4-5 pm to work second shift. considering the lack of daylight during your free time if you have normal hours, 2nd shift is the total opposite..
i always felt that it was a very relaxed routine: get home and stay up a bit late as you need an hour or two to unwind, wake up at 9 or 10 every day never having to be lacking in sleep and have all the daylight and late morning/afternoon hours to get s~~~ done before you head into work.
i used to work as a laborer on a military base, plowing snow 2nd shift. i could get up and work on s~~~ in the shop with my dad as he worked the same shift. i actually used to play rugby in ontario, and i would be able to go in and hit the weights and training at the base facility, shower up, hit the mess hall and make my shift with ease. it was awesome.
This body holding me is a reminder of my own mortality. Embrace this moment. Remember, we are eternal and all this pain is an illusion.
I pretty much agree with Jim Bolea on this. You didn’t give much about yourself so I am trying to give general advice. Are you young, strong and healthy? If so you might try the $20/hr job for awhile. Then try to find something that suits you better and further your education. The big corps do not give a s~~~ about you at all unless you are making them money. You get hurt you become less than worthless to them and will be replaced. Taking the $13/hr job will be a lot easier on you. In the meantime you can get more education in some skill you would like to do and advance yourself that way. As you may have noticed the key bit of advice here is “education”. Good luck, Bro.
Women's brains and vagina have one thing in common. There is nothing in there until a man puts something in there.
If you enjoy something you will always succeed . Pick what you would like to do . Don’t pick for the money
THE PLANTATION HAS NOW TURNED INTO THE KILLING FIELDS . WOMAN ARE NOW ROLLING CAMBODIAN STYLE .
My fathers friend worked at a GM plant in Oshawa Ontario for a number of years before his “back gave out”. The reason I put that in quotes is because he found out that they were going to lay off people on the following Monday after the weekend so he had an “accident” and hurt is back to go on workers compensation. He faked more injuries and eventually went on disability and now is retired on disability.
The guy was a full time employee though so if you do end up hurting your back on a contract not sure if you would be covered it is something you should look into before deciding. I am not saying you should fake a back injury I am just letting you know if it does happen for real you should cover all basis just in case. The reason GM bought the guys story was because back injury was common place in that work environment.

Anonymous5No is a powerful word in a job interview and also s~~~ty advice lol. Rusky sounds to me the frist job sounds alot better but those entry-level (20-25$) labour jobs are usually s~~~ pits. Take the frist one; instantly after keep searching. But heck if it turns o.k than right-on. Man another great post – for the books though these jobs sound good to me tho (I kinda zone out when I work.) Point made R you can always work and search – it took me a while to find a local place that would pay fairly for the work I would produce.
If the least paying job will have you living comfortably (able to cover your overhead) than go for the less stress lower pay, money is not everything especially when your health is at stake. At my job I have the flexibility to make at least an extra 40k a year if I wanted to, but I decline. Self preservation is a MGTOW slogan that should be considered here.
Never lose sight of what brought you here.

Anonymous12I tried working in the steel industry, and also tire manufacturing.
The changing shifts are a concern to me.
06-14/14-22/22-06 were the shift times
7 days work, 2 days rest
2 days morning, 2 days afternoon, 3 days night 2 days restTime shifting and no regular weekend really messed with my mind and dragged my life quality down, ruined what i had left of social contacts and sports.
did not know day from night and felt as if i were a slave to the machines. Was shown the door after 6 months each, as they do not want zombies and sleepwalkers on the job.
Props to those that do shift work for years and decades.
not for me, i need more regularity.
Anonymous11That’s tough.
1) Better pay with greater risk of injury and a contract position.
2) Lesser pay with saner conditions.First, you need to understand your tolerance for shift work. Some people can do it while others cannot.
I have to always go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday. I did used to work a steady second shift job and other than the people who would blow the horn to pick up the painter at 0630 across the street it was not too bad. I was young and had one hell of a party life after work.
If you do really f~~~ up your back, be aware that these injuries can sometimes be for life. The high rate of injury tells me that they are running the workers like rental sheep in a lumberjack camp.
Go with the less stress job. Unless you’re getting paid a f~~~ ton of money, it’s not worth wearing your body out and over-stressing for nickles. It honestly isn’t. Your medical bills later in life will wipe out all of your money because of working that kind of job.
Take the lower paying job and keep an eye out for advancement or other opportunities. You’ll be happier and healthier. If you’re going to kill yourself, work for yourself instead and collect all the profits. That’s really the only way its worth it.
Hey everyone! Thanks so much for all the replies. I just declined the higher paying job, although I have to say it was a hard decision. I do need money, but at the age of 30 I do not feel getting younger and already having some knee joint problems. With that being said that 20$ an hour could really help with my dental problems as I have to spend more than 10K for that s~~~…
But like most of you said that later on in life, these injuries will cost me more. I agree that money is not everything. I found out that Toyota used to pay 24$ just to start with, benefits took less time to get, and then management changed and with it the salaries and everything else went to s~~~. So I’m thinking that further down they will probably do more restructuring in terms of salaries and how long this contract will last for. Probably they will have workers stay there on contract permanently. F~~~ing globalization and robots are taking over. Only a matter of time while they replace their workforce with machines.
