Hey fellas. I really need some advice here, as I’m getting two job offers. Here’s the first one.

It’s in Cambridge ON at a Toyota factory. Basically I would be assigned to a specific job and then pretty much stay there with little growth opportunity unless I have few years of seniority. They pay 20$ an hour, but from what I’ve been reading, people say it’s very physical and a lot of them do get hurt quite often. It’s about 40-45 mins away from where I live. And the shifts go from 6:15 am-3:45 pm, and then they switch from mornings to evening-night shift. They also have another plant in Woodstock city, which is much further from me and would often send new guys there, back and forth.

The second job offer is also Automotive company, doing quality inspection. The pay is less at 13$, but from my understanding it’s less physical, and it’s closer to home. The shift is only afternoon from 3:30-11:45.

I have been eyeing another job post, where they assemble parts for Ford company, but haven’t sent them my resume yet.

So anyway between the two choices above, would you take the better pay or go for less stressful working conditions? Now I am not sure how less stressful or less physical the second one is, but from what I’ve been reading it sounds like it is.

That sounds like quite a difference in pay, but the second job sounds more sane.

If you can afford the second one it definitely sounds like a better way to live except for the pay, but if the first job injures you, then that’s not going to help you earn a future income either.

They both could SUCK, there are NO Guarantees.

I think it comes down to which one can You afford to take ??

Will you be barely getting by at $13.00 per hour, or is that enough to do what you need to do ????

I used to work at a German manufacturing company and it’s very similar to how Ford and Toyota functions. The only demanding aspects of these jobs is the seating assembly where they can weigh quite a bit and require some back work on your end but such a thing is not always an ongoing process. They’ll have you move to another position such as doors or upper frames after a few months or weeks. It really depends on how much the company needs to produce.

Bear in mind nothing in car factories is an ongoing thing, they always have something new for you to do.

You can take the highest paying salary and it will come with good benefits and security but you’ll pay a lot in taxes as well so keep that mind.

As for getting hurt it’s nothing major. Because of the hourly rate, you or your team, needs to hit a certain production rate so you will have to go fast and sometimes a few cuts and bruises are bound to happen.

Inspection jobs are less demanding but they’re extremely boring and drag on forever so you’ll have to weigh in which is more beneficial for you and how it will span out in the long term.

Ford would be your best bet since it’s the most easy going and laid back of all car manufacturing plants.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m thinking. The first one is a clean place to work at, but they are literally on your ass every single moment. Lots of stress and pressure. Lay offs and work related injuries are common. But the pay is great, that is all.

The second one I haven’t really seen much reviews. Except one review where the guy says it’s easy and almost no pressure or stress there. But it is at a different plant. It seems though as this job would allow me to get into more opportunities, but not sure…

Is the $13/hr job the same commute as the $20?

Back and forth from day to night shift? They wonder why they have f~~~ing injuries? It’s a surefire recipe for disaster on or off the job, your biological clock will be shooting springs and gears from every opening! F~~~ THAT!

And that’s the reason why I am thinking of taking choice 2. I would have to get up at least at 5 am in the morning just to get ready and then it’s another 30 min drive there. But 20$ an hour is pretty lucrative. Then again…injuries. But I don’t know how the second job is. I haven’t really found many reviews about it.

I’d take 2. It’s easy to screw your back in more physical jobs. In the long run you will wish you preserved your body the most you could.

I should also point out that the marginal increase is only 7 bucks—how much of that will be eaten up by higher taxes because you are making more money? That of course reduces the marginal return. Take it from a guy who was making 80+K a year and had four strokes, one nearly fatal as compared to now I make 24K a year and no strokes. Like JimboLea said you might be surprised with what you can live without.

Jeez…I think I’m gonna go with 2. There is a reason why they pay 20$ an hour. And it’s also contract. You don’t get benefits until you put in 3 years, then you get full time. But until then you have probably more than 90% chance of getting fired or let go. I’m almost 31 and my knees are not in the best shape..can’t imagine what it will be like when I’m 40-50 and beyond.

At Toyota the only people who are treated better are either trades people, engineers or management, obviously. So maybe I will get some kind of a trade and apply there later on in life.

    Money’s nice, but…

I work a pretty low-paying job because I know how to live within my means and enjoy life without a yacht and a mansion. I have no doubt I could get a much higher paying job if I want, but would I enjoy it? It may sound cliche, but I spend so much time at work that I’d rather work a job I enjoy for less pay and enjoy my life.

CST is right. what benefit would it be to be paid 1 million dollars a year if you must spend every waking moment engaged in work? None for you; but plenty for your heirs and assignee’s when you croak from a heart attack—and do those little miserable pukes really deserve to live well on your money and hard work? F~~~ them!

With the 20/hr job, you’ll be spending more on gas, too, not to mention that lovely 30 minute commute…unless there’s an accident, then it could turn into an hour or more.
