Here in the UK, ‘the grandchildren’ has became a national mania.

I think that for the fathers, it’s a pitiful virility thing. ‘The fruit of my loins’, and so on. They also think that they going live forever through the line, so that’s ego too.

The mothers – the woman-child who never grows up – treat children as dolls, and just want another one to replace the ones that have grown up and gone away. It’s also a sick fantasy. I see this daily – old women parading grandchildren around in pushchairs. There’s no doubt that in their minds, the child is theirs.
