Marvel Comics Claims Focus On Diversity Is Reason Behind Poor Sales

A senior executive at Marvel Comics has claimed that the company’s recent focus on creating diverse superheroes is a driving factor behind its declining comic book sales, arguing that loyal customers “were turning their noses up” at their efforts.
Speaking at the Marvel retailer summit this week, David Gabriel, Marvel’s vice president of sales, said the company had heard that people “didn’t want” any more diverse characters.

“They didn’t want female characters out there,” Gabriel told industry outlet ICv2. “That’s what we heard, whether we believe that or not.”

“I don’t know that that’s really true, but that’s what we saw in sales,” he added. “Any character that was diverse, any character that was new, our female characters, anything that was not a core Marvel character, people were turning their nose up,” he continued.

Gabriel’s comments follow Marvel’s recent attempts to create ‘diverse’ characters, such as a female Thor, a female Iron Man, a mixed race Spiderman, a Muslim teenage girl named Kamala Khanas as the current Ms. Marvel, as well as the appearance of a villain based on Donald Trump.

The executive’s comments reportedly caused a stir online, with some Marvel fans maintaining that it is not the diverse characters that bother them, but the constantly updating and expanding universes and, consequently, the resulting confusing storylines.

It’s not “diversity”.

Marvel already has a black woman who can control the weather (Storm), a blue man with a tail who can teleport (Nightcrawler), a new york jew made of stone (Ben Grimm), canadians (Wolverine), immortal insane gun-fu cancer survivors (Deadpool), aliens (and then some), furries (Squirrel Girl), fatties (Bertha Crawford), and even f~~~ing dinosaurs (Dinah-Soar). The list goes on and on and on.

Marvel comics already had diversity. Marvel comics had f~~~ing EVERYTHING.

What marvel has been doing lately is not “diversity”. It’s marvel f~~~ing with their core product, injecting a bunch of virtue signalling social justice feelz where they have no business doing so.

This has not only alienated their entire market, but driven away any potential new customers as well.

Consider the following: Marvel movies are going strong. People of all ages and demographics are paying out the nose to see them, not just comic book fans. But what happens when a fan of the movies who is not a comic book fan actually steps into a comic book shop?

Based on what he’s (or perhaps even she’s) seen in the movies he’s looking to buy a book about Thor. Or Iron Man. Or Captain America. He’s expecting Thor to be a man, Iron Man to be Tony Stark, and Captain America to actually be an American (not a secret Nazi).

But what does he find instead?

Is he going to end up actually BUYING one of those books? Is he going to become a comic book reader?

Hell no.

THAT is why marvel is failing.

It seems the comicbook industry is a lesson in how snobbish attitudes destroy an industry.

In the 1990’s comics were in almost every grocery store and dollar store across the U.S. Then around 2000, the comic industry decided to pull back and only distribute to comicbook shops.

A few years later, the only reason the comicbook industry did not collapse completely was the internet sales saved them for the moment.

Then, around 2011, both DC Comics and Marvel Comics decided to take a hard turn to SJW. DC destroyed their franchise with Flashpoint story arc, while Marvel took a more gentle decline of replacing their characters with different race and gender knockoffs.

Then, last year, while Marvel Comics kept going further into SJW cult mentality, DC Comics executives took a look at the sales and did a major u-turn with DC Rebirth storyline. The DC Rebirth storyline is not perfect, but it looks like DC Comics wants to win back the fans.

Meanwhile, Marvel Comics continues further down the drain. To give you an idea how bad the situation is. In 2010, the top selling Marvel Comic title sold about 100,000 to 120,000 per issue. Now, Marvel Comic’s top titles will sell around 30,000 per issue.

From the rumors I have heard, after the 2017 Election, with President Trump winning, made things worse with some of those at Marvel Comics having grown to detest rural and middle America for voting for President Trump.

Some people suspect that some of those are Marvel Comics may even be happy that none of rural and middle America buy Marvel Comics because they voted for President Trump and Marvel Comics wants to focus selling to those in the urban, progressive political bubbles.

I can’t wait for the Black Panther movie to come out, and I enjoyed watching Luke Cage on Netflix every bit as much as Daredevil even though one is black and one is white…that isn’t the issue for me…its them forcing the bulls~~~ diversity down out throats where it isn’t needed. Marvel comics has always had a healthy roster of non-white male characters…if it just so happens their most popular money makers are white males…why is that somehow bad and needs changed?

Disney is doing this with Star Wars too. The last movie had to have Ray the female lead and Poe the black side kick. I was looking forward to having Luke, Han, and Leia playing big roles…but nah…2 of the 3 got killed off(1 in movie 1 in real life) and Luke did nothing. When they came out with Rogue One with another female lead and minority sidekick I didn’t even bother to go watch it. I doubt I’ll be going to watch the next one either. The worst part is they show Kylo Ren, who apparently is one of the big bad dudes…and he’s a f~~~ing dorky looking emo kid. I was a Star Wars fan as a kid, and Darth Vader was a f~~~ing bad, intimidating dude. Kylo Ren…he’s a f~~~ing pussy…

Its just like they are determined not to run a white male lead for some reason, and I suspect when the current marvel movie roster crushing it in the box office bows out and they try to replace them with a new roster of actors/actresses and characters, its going to be the same.

Probably a publisher who wants to just make some bad ass action packed s~~~. Marvel and DC have always owned the market because they have always put pretty decent products out…if Marvel wants to start putting out s~~~ I’m willing to be a lot of comic fanatics aren’t just giving up the hobby but rather buying from companies that aren’t putting s~~~ out. Japanese Manga and Anime also seems like something that has been becoming more popular over the years as well…and considering Japan is like 99.9% Japanese and already has a Manga/Anime that is focused on female customers I don’t think they have any reason to force diversity or pussification into their stuff…they’ll always be making stuff with badass male characters and big breasted scantily clad female characters.
