I’m 28, a trades professional (work in plumbing, gasfitting, and hydronic piping systems, most often I work in piping of oil, natural gas or propane), and recently I was laid off from my job due to shortage of work (I live in Calgary, AB). I am currently receiving unemployment insurance, and I also already have a lot of money saved up so for the next few months I’m sure I will be OK.

I’ve sent out literally 200 or so resumes, went to interviews, I got 3 or 4 offers which I havent took, because they are not in my trade. Contacted pretty much every company here in my field and they are not hiring, even when I said I’d be very flexible with wage.

    What should I do?
There seems to be a lot of work in Vancouver and Toronto at the moment in my trade, should I move there? What would you do?
Take an “in between job” and ride it out?

See the other thing is, I do live with my father here, and I care about him, plus he doesnt charge me anything to live with him. So, I don’t want to just leave him.

Man this oil economy really fcuking tanked big time…

When you say tradesman, what do you mean?

If you have nothing tying you down then maybe it’s time to relocate to where the money is.

Might turn out to be a nice adventure.

An old mantra of mine that I got from a training course was: Adapt, migrate, or fail.

I say chase the money. Go where the money will be. You’re young, you’ll have lots of time to relax later in life. Learn as much as possible, earn as much as possible, then relax. I am doing the same thing in a few months. I’ll be moving to Florida.

If it costs you your peace of mind, then it is too expensive.

I work in piping systems, primarily production, processing, and distribution of fossil fuels. Pays well and I like it. But nobody is hiring right now! 🙁

I live with my father. If I was alone I would leave right now to another city. But I can’t just leave him… you know. What am I supposed to do lol?

WARNING WARNING WARNING Will Robinson! If you move to Florida don’t go any further south than Ocala…that is the border with Libtard land. Everything south is generally young lib kids or old libs from the northeast.

You might also want to shun Jacksonville and Tallahassee.

Try not to dig into your savings. A good “f~~~ you fund” is essential. You will be less likely to make a desperate move.

If you have nothing tying you down then maybe it’s time to relocate to where the money is. Might turn out to be a nice adventure.

    Roger that.

I got 3 or 4 offers which I havent taken, because they are not in my trade.

What’s wrong with that? Can you really afford to be picky and toss away 3 or 4 jobs? I would take a job that’s not perfect to avoid digging into my “f~~~ you fund” – at least while I continue looking.

You can take something while you keep looking.
( Unless you think it would severely limit you )

CREATE AS MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOURSELF AS YOU CAN. When a door opens for you, walk through it. You can change your mind and pick and choose later. It’s hard to build a “f~~~ you fund”.

    Vancouver and Toronto

    I have been to Calgary.
( Nothing further to add on that )

Forget geography right now. Concentrate on creating as many opportunities for yourself as you can. And I wish you every success no matter what.

    N~~~~RD MODE ACTIVATE

I’ve sent out literally 200 or so resumes, went to interviews, I got 3 or 4 offers which I havent took, because they are not in my trade.

Woah! That’s a waaaay better return than I’ve been getting!

What’s wrong with that? Can you really afford to be picky and toss away 3 or 4 jobs? I would take a job that’s not perfect to avoid digging into my “f~~~ you fund” – at least while I continue looking.

Exactly, don’t sign any contracts, don’t shoot yourself if the job is less than ideal. Go to work, reminding yourself every moment: “This is only temporary.”

Disclaimer: All advice on the internet should always be treated as though it is certain to yield long-term negative outcomes. So don’t listen to me. Now take what’s useful, and throw away the rest.

Never under any circumstances take advice from anyone on the internet, especially from me, a 22-year old inexperienced Computer Engineering graduate whose only chance of getting a decently paying job comes from lying a f~~~ton on his CV.

And if you absolutely must take advice on the internet, be sure you’ve first carefully thought it over and have come to the independent conclusion that it’s right for you.

maybe you can take dad with you…
so you can go to where the money is.
otherwise, take what you can in the meantime.
work is always better than digging in to savings.
not like i have any anymore….

This is a bit of a contradiction, take the “other” trade job and learn new skills, invest in your knowledge, that’s how you improve become more valuable.

Well see, I’m not desperate for a number of reasons

    – In Canada when laid off i receive EI, so the government actually pays me while i look for work. Its not as much as I would make at a job, but it covers my expenses. So I dont need to dip into my savings.

    – I already have a big savings.

I guess you guys are right. Ill probably take an in between job for the next 3-4 months. At that time if the economy here is still fcuked I need to look at relocating for work in my trade.

You could take a job somewhere else in the country or pick a new kind of job. Maybe the other job is something that you’re interested in? Maybe it’s another trade or something you’re passionate about, or maybe you just want to try something new and get experience with something else.

I would ride it out. Take another job somewhere else, maybe an in between job would be alright. Whatever you do, find some new work.

There are ethanol, natural gas, oil facilities all over the place, as well as companies who service this stuff, cost of living is low. Not many women to mess with you here either.

Also a huge water aquifer out here, irrigation booms and pipelines, windmills and grain silos, all could use your set of skills im sure.

As for advice, any job is better than none, because you’ll get experience. You don’t want too many “empty spots” on your resume.
