Yes, many stores now hire a full-time employee whose job is to just patrol and watch for shoplifters. I used to work as an independent sales rep in Walmart chain stores, and got to know a few of those guys. Some of them are pretty nice. I also got to hear about a few times they busted people, but I never saw anything like this woman!

I was part of a consulting contract for a major razor/”health & beauty” products manufacturer a few decades ago. Their retailers had finally mutinied over the question of anti-shoplifting technology the packets of razor blades and had essentially forced the manufacturer to institute a crash program to include the tags in their packaging. Apparently the stuff was flying out of the stores and not via the cash registers either.
I read reports which flatly stated that fifty percent of the pilferage was committed by store employees. That’s why the retailers wanted the manufacturer to tag the packets; they couldn’t trust their own employees to do the job!

I don’t think the guy knew the liability that he was placing himself in. A couple weeks ago I saw several Walmart guys chase a thief across the parking lot. They tried to circle him off but they knew better than to touch him. They just kept him running around until the cops showed up…
Thieves have the mindset of, “I was just trying to make some money” because stealing is all they know how to do. They think people that work for a living are stupid. I heard a line in a movie once that went “There’s a lot of smart guys in San Quentin.”

If this is true, they are/were NOT security guards, just regular employees who endangered themselves and others.
They have not had any training in “security” at all, and should not have been employed as “security guards”.Security guards and Mall Cops are not law enforcement, however they MUST be properly trained on procedures, equipment, rights and responsibilities and liabilities (because they are considered as supplementary to Law Enforcement/Peace Officer), or they can not be employed in such a position.
