    Hey guys-

I’ve read about herbivores, but I’m not an expert.

Do any of you know how much the herbivore movement has grown since it’s inception?

Has it spread to encompass all of Japan or is it kind of isolated?

I would expect this movement to take off.

    Thanks guys

It was estimated upwards of 60% to 70% of Japanese males under the age of 30 last i heard, that being a couple of years ago. I believe it to be expanding, i saw more recent news postings of herbivore culture in Japan. It has expanded so much, that Japanese marketing started removing “sexy” commercials from TV knowing it would be counterproductive HA ! Imagine that, a society so full of MGTOW’s that sex no longer sells !

That would be fantastic to not have to deal with having that garbage shoved in your face all the time, that’s for sure. Rather awkward when stuff like that comes on around other people.

Yea, the beer commericals, the KY commercials etc etc, they’ve been shoving a sea of empty eyed chicks in bikini’s at us for far too long. Maybe when i was 13 years old i would have liked it, now i realize the corporations are throwing female sexuality at us, like a bacon strip to a dog. No thanks, I recently stopped buying axe deoderant and switched to degree because i can’t stand their “how to attract the ladies” ads.

I’ve worked in Japan on and off over the last few decades and watched the so-called herbivore movement grow. What follows is just my personal observations, but I believe they may be of interest to some here.

Herbivores have always existed – Japan and it’s people are wound tighter than a drum. Huge social pressure is the norm and there’s an old Japanese saying about the nail which sticks up being hammered down. While Japanese schools are notorious for this, colleges and universities are notoriously lax – even more so than some US “party schools”.

Some people, no matter how much social conditioning they’ve been subjected to, will rebel and the “easiest” form of rebellion is non-compliance. Some people won’t play the game and will thus remove themselves from society. (Sound familiar?) As tightly structured as it’s society is, Japan has always had “room” for such people.

The explosion in herbivores is primarily economic and not social – The salaryman has been dead in Japan since the 80s. Life long employment with one firm is now the exception rather than the rule and the numbers of such jobs grow smaller each year. “Real” jobs are becoming harder to find and keep.

Much like how US firms use temps to “cushion” their fluctuating labor needs, Japanese firms use “contracts”. The big difference here is that Japanese “contracts” are usually part-time work where US “temps” are usually full time. While both Japanese “contracts” and US “temps” pay poorly, US workers get more hours. More and more Japanese men now work as “contacts” for their adult lives. Even government jobs are filled by “contracts”.

Japanese women rule the home with an iron fist – No patriarchy here. Men may earn the money, but women alone decide what to do with it. I met executives whose wives gave them allowances. Like Henny Youngman, Japanese wives are all about “get the money”.

Women’s financial decisions is even partially behind Japan’s stagnant economy over the last few decades. Women preferred to save in post office accounts which primarily earned interest through real estate investments. When Japan’s property bubble burst – it made the US bubble look tiny – those post office accounts took a huge hit. That in turn made Japanese women even more money hungry.

Now braid those three strands together. You’ve a strict conformist society with a long history of allowed nonconformist behavior, male earning potentials depressed for decades, and increased female financial anxiety. Ergo herbivores.

Here’s the primary difference between herbivores and MGTOWs

Japanese men are increasingly unable to meet the financial expectations of Japanese women. They withdraw in the face of their inabilities and become herbivores. If they could meet those expectations, they would.

MGTOWs are increasingly disgusted by the behavior of women along with the social, cultural, and legal privileges afforded women. They withdraw so as not to participate in a system rigged against them. They will not return even if female behave changes and female privilege is overturned.

Herbivore is a result of inability.
MGTOW is a result of choice.
Herbivore is primarily an economic phenomenon.
MGTOW is primarily a social phenomenon.
Herbivore is an acquiescence to fate.
MGTOW is a reclamation of sovereignty.
    Herbivore is a passive reaction.
    MGTOW is a deliberate action.

Of course, all of this is just my opinion and based on my admittedly limited observations.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.

    Fantastic breakdown OldBill.

Very articulate and I believe accurate.

I would not go back to the plantation even if the laws changed; as you stated. I was naive/idealistic when I got married, but I was not stupid. I opted out of the default marriage contract with a prenup. The end result was the same – divorce but I avoid the financial reprocussions. Sum zero game at best.

    You are a wise voice.

    OldBill-

This is brilliant. Thank you so much for explaining. You contrasted nicely the difference between herbivore and MGTOW. I’m glad I’m not married to one of those Japanese ladies. I heard some of the husbands don’t get much of an allowance. Thanks again

Herbivore is a result of inability.

Some of them might be…but I’d be willing to bet there are plenty of herbivore men who make a decent living for themselves and just like us are simply not interested in a modern woman…how else would they be able to afford those expensive sex dolls lol.

I think OldBill has pretty much done a great job of clearing the air by giving us a simple compare-and-contrast of the differences between MGTOW and Herbivore Men.

I would be shocked if, in some aspects, there is overlap. For example, seeing some men forced into it by economic conditions, some men take the same posture as a choice.

With that sense of Entitlement to overcharge, some of these women in Japan have no clue as to what the “market will support”.

The top 25% of male earners are not going to fight each other for what is clearly a delusional 70% of women. The gold-digging must be pretty disgusting and will produce a new condition:

More and more of the top 25% of males going MGTOW as a common sense way to protect their own interest.

Ladies- you are not all worth 4 million Yen to “buy”. The smart men with money will “rent”.

Clearly, the top 25% of male earners in Japan at the commodity with the higher value. Hope they realize it.

    Frank V.
