Hikikomori (Social Isolation)

Hikikomori is a growing phenomenon in Japan, particularly for single young men. Some people find it hard to adapt to the social environments of schools and job sites. The pressure to be productive can be overwhelming.

Lately, when I get a day off from work, I stay inside of my apartment all day. I don’t want to deal with people face to face. I just use the internet and play my guitar. Sometimes I drive my car late at night and go to a 24 hour supermarket. It’s less crowded. I feel annoyed when I’m surrounded by people.

Japanese cities are so crowded that I can see why people get sick of each other. I suppose that the percentage of young men that don’t feel like they have much social value (because they don’t have a college degree and a job with a good salary) must be reluctant to date women. They probably don’t want to be judged as failures. And women generally want to date (and have sex with) a man who feels confident about his ability to handle the world.

Hikikomori could become a worldwide phenomenon—particularly in urban areas. People around the world feel pressured to prepare themselves for a career, and make a lot of money to survive.

And I wish i could go to a place where I don’t even have to see people or don’t even get phone signal.

I love solitude, being in my own space with my own time.

But I also like doing stuff with others, interesting activities, challenging tasks. It makes you feel alive.

I get the reason for social isolation, with the stupid demands for standardized behavior and the boring talk subjects.
However one can just ghost the boring part, and get only what he wants: a group for activities.

Paintball, airsoft, football, baseball, basketball, shooting, hunting, martial arts…

Get there, share your interests, play your game, get the hell out.

Take what you want from life and from people, and NFG about the anything else.

Japan is ahead of the curve.

Hikikomori is MGTOW. They have labelled it social isolation as a pejorative with the latter word having a negative connotation. Simply put, herbivores have jobs and hikikomori do not.

I would not go that far, but doing so is better than being worked to death while everyone benefits from your labors except yourself.

The only reason the governments have no tried to purge these men is those in government realize the government might spark a revolution against millions of men whom have nothing really to lose.

If I can become better at trading Stocks and Crypto…That will be me.

I will grow my own food so I don’t even have to go to the Store. All purchases will be made online.

Minimalism of the type you’re suggesting is what the “grass eaters” strive towards. They engage with the wider society at the least amount necessary to meet their needs, needs which they’ve reduced to a minimum.

Being a “grass eater” or herbivore is a conscious lifestyle choice. Being a hikikomori is a psychiatric disorder.

Ah yes, this is a problem here in the USA too. Millennials living off their “Boomer” parents life savings. They are slowly bleeding their parents dry. Perhaps the Social Isolation is not as severe here as it is in Japan though.

Very much so. Remember, we’re talking about a difference in degree and not kind.

The Millennials returning to the nest are working either part time or full time and are most definitely socially engaged. Their problem is that they can’t earn enough from their low income jobs to service their various debts; school, car, phone, etc. That’s why they’re relying on their Boomer parents to avoid bills like rent and food and to also provide an additional income stream.

They’re debt slaves. They’ve been enslaved by the poor choices they made regarding education and work. They’ll continue to be enslaved by their poor choices in the future. As mindless consumers, they’ve consumed any hope they have of a future.

In contrast, the hikikomori don’t work at all. If they manage to earn any money it’s usually whatever pittance they can get acting as chat room moderator, trading manga, or something similar. Many choose goods as a payment with those goods are related to whatever anime series they’ve decided to “drown” themselves in.

Millennials could live on their own if they downsized their appetites as consumers. Hikikomori cannot live on their own because they can’t perform those tasks needed to feed themselves.

Perhaps the Social Isolation is not as severe here as it is in Japan though.

Being a social recluse myself, I might be a borderline hikikomori. I only deal with people online, and are getting outside only for the basic necessities (work, buying food/supplies etc.). Recently I ditched an old friend as the not-so-hidden insults became to much.

My case is I can’t abide stupidity. Really. It works online as in the real world. I’m simply allergic to people who can’t connect the simplest of dots. Luckily, I have a “home” here, so I’m not completely isolated. Other MGTOW are the only acceptable people I can stand.

Let them spend money on themselves, let them live like they want to live. I know that Japan has a serious problem regarding to the birth rate, but if they want more kids, they will have to change how things work today. Free time means that a man can sit down and think about life, and realize a lot of s~~~ that is going on, after that, there is no turning back, you can’t trap him anymore, you can’t shame him into anything.
