Is this appropriate? Is the punishment deserving of the crime? Should she have been standing watch at her rank? ignore the fact she was a woman. what is the standard?
Please give us your perspective.

Anonymous7Pussy Pass.
Coppock was sentenced to receive a letter of reprimand and three months of half-pay. But because she had earlier received a similar non-judicial punishment, the new sentence only added an additional month of half-pay for the junior officer.
Well golly-gee, at least she has the sadz
Coppock has a tattoo on her left wrist that includes the latitude and longitude of the location of the collision, as well as seven green clovers representing the seven fallen sailors
I think this bitch needs a good ol’ fashion blanket party.
“But because she had earlier received a similar non-judicial punishment,”
This is where they should have watched her very carefully.
A tranquil mind is neither happy nor sad, it is uninfluenced by external conditions.

Anonymous42Cargo ship? How do you miss a cargo ship?
It’s big enough that you can ping the f~~~ing thing with a foghorn!
Is this appropriate?
Yes. Remember, this is just the first court martial. They’re dealing with the “small fry” before trying the CO.
Is the punishment deserving of the crime?
Yes. What the article fails to make clear is that her career is now over. The armed forces have an “Up or Out” policy for officers. You either get promoted to your next rank within a certain time frame or you’re discharged. She’s never going to be promoted and the jobs she’ll fill while she’s still in will involve stuff like cutlery inventories at a boot camp. She’s done.
I’ll also point out that several flag officers have already lost their jobs over the Fitz collision and other incidents. The career of the CO, Benson, is over too. It just remains to be seen how much he’ll be fined or even jailed.
Should she have been standing watch at her rank?
At her rank? Yes. At her level of training? No. And, oddly enough, the fact she personally has a c~~~ had nothing to do with it. The fact that the Navy wanted to quickly qualify many c~~~s is part of the root of the problem.
Putting it another way, she didn’t f~~~ up because she has a c~~~. Instead, the training was watered down to the point of irrelevance to more quickly qualify more c~~~s. She wasn’t inadequately trained because she is Sarah Coppock. She was inadequately trained because standards were lowered.
I explained in a thread on this topic last year that Navy’s deck officer school had been a rigorous six month course with a healthy washout rate at the War College in Newport. That course has been replaced with a set of self-study DVDs. Watching TV was how Coppock had been “trained”.
what is the standard?
Depends on the situation. As an ensign, Chester Nimitz ran a destroyer aground in the Philippines back before WW1. He was found guilty, received a letter of reprimand, and nearly four decades later was kicking Japan’s ass as CINCPAC. In his case, the charts were poor, navigation depended on clocks and sun sights, no one was killed, and the ship wasn’t damaged.
In Coppock’s case, seven real sailors died and the ship is still being surveyed to see if it’s worth repairing. Coppock had satellite navigation aids, radars, LORAN, excellent charts, and all the assistance 21st Century technology can provide. Coppock also failed to communicate with CIC, failed to ensure her bridge team was qualified, and – most damning – failed to follow her commanding officer’s explicit orders regarding the reporting of shipping approaching within a certain distance over two dozen times.
Coppock was incompetent. Whether she would have been competent given the proper training is unknown.

Should’ve been an all female crew, instant equal ramifications for all.
Navy leadership totally dropped the ball regarding justice here.
“Where’s the strawberries?”"It seems like there's times a body gets struck down so low, there ain't a power on earth that can ever bring him up again. Seems like something inside dies so he don't even want to get up again. But he does."

Hands down!
Exactly like lowering the entry level fitness standards. Push ups, pull ups….

Keelhaul her. Seven times for every dead sailor she’s responsible for.
Women want everything, but want responsibility and accountability for nothing.

Again, hands down!
I am a Buddhist and can appreciate the fact that the military is designed to train people, who choose to serve, to fight and kill. This is the nature of the environment. Watching DVDs is for university students, who typically memorize information, rather than get their hands dirty in a practical environment.

self-study DVDs
Seriously this s~~~ p~~~es me off.
“I watched Michael Schumacher in poll position on DVD, I can do it too, let alone never having sat in the stand watching a F1 race!”. LOL
People need to eat some humble pie.

If there had been justice, we would have tried and sentenced every Pentagon chair warmer, every admiral, and every member of Congress who suggested and agreed to deck officer training being reduced to watching DVDs during your free time.
Don’t let your well found suspicions regarding c~~~s fool you. Coppock is a symptom, not the disease.
“Where’s the strawberries?”
Ever read the book? Wouk makes it very clear that Queeg would have never become “Queeg” if his fellow officers had done their jobs. The movie has a scene in which the defense lawyer Greenwald explains that too, but the book really drives the point home.
Coppock’s incompetence wouldn’t have killed seven sailors if the Navy, the Pentagon, and Congress had done their jobs. While I don’t know if she could have passed a real deck officer school, I do know she was incompetent because the “training” she received couldn’t train and couldn’t weed out incompetents.

As Always, Bill and others make a great point. What is the root cause of the accident? is it because she was a she? A poorly trained man would have done just as poorly.
Training at that level takes risk, but I can’t imagine learning to command a ship at sea can be done by DVD. She seems to have really f’ed up. But who ever trained her and signed off on her are the criminals, yes?

Like Bill mentioned, it is not because she has a vag. It is something much deeper than that. Something that has spread like an Ebola virus. The bar has been lowered.

Blaming the system is a cop out. She is a military professional who didn’t follow orders and men died.
All she get’s is the T shirt and two tattoo’s commemorating her performance with one on her wrist showing the coordinants of the accident and another of a seven leaf clover. One for every man she killed.
If she wasn’t trained for the job she should have declined it. She sounds like a sexist privileged snowflake who didn’t trust the men on the bridge to do their jobs because penis.
#icethemout; Remember Thomas Ball. He died for your children.
She seems to have really f’ed up.
She did at that. While her continued failure to talk with CIC where the radars are manned and operated was bad enough, her flouting Benson’s standing orders is mind boggling.
IIRC, Benson had standing orders to be notified if any ship approached within 5000 or 6000 yards. Coppock didn’t report something like 12 such approaches on her watch, including one which got closer than something like 750 yards.
But who ever trained her and signed off on her are the criminals, yes?
Bingo. That’s why Benson is going to get slammed and why various flag ranks in SURFPAC, CINCPAC, and Japan have all been “retired”. Of course, they were only implementing a policy developed by their masters at the Pentagon and in Congress.

She was trained. The fact that the training she received is in itself worthless is the problem.

Can I assume that every other junior officer is being “trained” to the same low standard? This ship only got busted because of the high Operational Tempo?
What is the impact on morale? Surely the enlisted see they are being led by less than qualified officers. if the officers are sub standard, what about the senior NCO’s?
What is an E-1 to think? if his bosses are hacks….

“Coppock acknowledged she had “low confidence” in some of the sailors standing watch in the ship’s Combat Information Center (CIC), one reason why she never checked with the sailors manning the sophisticated radars in the CIC who could have also checked the distances of passing commercial ships.”
Typical woman trying to shift the blame to others—its always someone else’s fault. #NOTME

Remember all the collisions and other problems last year? They happened because the chickens are coming home to roost.
The problem with deck officers took time to develop because there had been numbers of deck officers who had been trained and certified the old way. They represented a pool of experience, experience they passed on while working with the officers who had only watched the DVDs. As those officers left the service or were promoted “above” watch standing duties, they took that experience with them. That’s when the skills erosion started.
It went:
– Trained the old way
– Trained by those who were trained the old way
– Trained by those who had been trained by those who were trained the old way
– Trained by those who had been trained by those who had been trained by those who had been trained the old way. It’s like making a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy.
What is the impact on morale?
They can’t keep manning levels up. A lot of the fleet is below 80% and it was that way for certain rates during my day.
if the officers are sub standard, what about the senior NCO’s?
Senior NCOs run the armed forces day to day. Smart officers realize that and let the NCOs do their thing. Some officers never learn to trust their NCOs. What Coppock’s relationship was with her NCOs I don’t know.
What is an E-1 to think? if his bosses are hacks….
An E1 doesn’t yet know enough to know they’re hacks. By the time he does know enough, he’s an E3, E4, or higher and is deciding about whether to stay in or not. With manning below 80%, want to guess what that decision is?

I wonder why these strong and confident women who were taught that all men are murderous baffoons would think the men on CIC command were incompetent?
Social programming?
It calls into question the ability of any woman in positions of power that need to depend on men they have been taught to hate and distrust.
