Women comprise 47% of medical school graduates. http://kff.org/other/state-indicator/medical-school-graduates-by-gender/

Nurses not working hard? I’ll call BS on that, I’ve known male and female nurses, especially floor nurses… on their feet all day or night… But pay is great.

In Engineering, the picture is a bit different: 18.4% women graduates overall, with stark differences in disciplines. Some disciplines, like mine, are high — 33% in Chemical Engineering. Other disciplines, like electrical — very low at 11.4%. The highest represented discipline, unsurprisingly: Environmental engineering.

I don’t think college is right for everyone and it’s no guarantee of success. In some fields, like mine, it’s the piece of paper that will get you hired. Back when I graduated, college cost 60% less than it does now. There is also a serious disconnect between what is taught (advanced math and theory), and is in demand in industry (practical skills, troubleshooting). So it was a much less costly gamble then, and one much more likely to have a positive outcome. At the same time, I know students who graduated with the same degree in 2008, who 4 years later weren’t working in their field.

The idea of a University guaranteeing you get a job is ridiculous. If I buy a textbook on, say, SQL, and don’t learn it, is the publisher or author responsible? Or am I?

Free education? Nothing is free. I went to a State school, and so, about 2/3 of my education was paid for by the government. My education wasn’t free, but rather, 66% taxpayer subsidized.

Anyway, everyone knows the main reason kids go to college is for a re-enactment of the movie Animal House.

    I gotta disagree…

I wouldn’t advise against further education because it limits possibilities in general.
There’s never enough money and I don’t involve myself in debts at all. I don’t have debts for my ongoing education.

"We are free to follow our own path. There are those who will take that freedom from us, and too many of you gladly give it. But it is our ability to choose – whatever you think is true – that makes us human. There is no book or teacher to give you the answers, to show you the path. Choose your own way! Do not follow me, or anyone else."
