Now THIS is interesting! Synthetic gear oil (75w) is good down to -40 does not seem to have a problem in Cold temps. What does surprise me is if the gears are freezing up, that means that there is some other issue at play. I’m kind of surprised they don’t use heaters on these rigs, or just use a lower viscosity lubricant. Or just use a dry lubricant.
The issue at play is the extreme ranges of temperatures that some vehicles have to work in. I have personally seen diesel/gas/naphtha/kerosene/oils/propane actually gel up and freeze. Tanks, other AFV’s, and every other type of veh froze if they weren’t idling at 1800-2000rpm and “jockeyed” frequently to prevent brakes and other mechanical part from freezing over. Hell even our evac choppers were in their hangers to start up, pre-warmed and then towed outside when they were warm enough to fly.
Sometimes the weather just decides to pop in at its worst to remind us who is actually the boss.
There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it
