I saw a show once, quite some time ago, where they were interviewing Japanese men about the work ethic, long hours, etc. This was long before the herbivore trend was a thing.
The men were working really, really long hours, and the interviewer asked why.
It turns out it was not all about money, or honor, or some aggressive desire to succeed. They simply did not want to spend time with their wives and children. It was unpleasant and demeaning and considered unmanly.
The American interviewer was quite appalled.

There was a similar story on the Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” show not long ago, but they were visiting private little men’s club bars. Men went there after work and hung out until late, and the universal reason was that they did not want to be home while the wife was awake.
