    Hey gentlemen,

Have any of you practiced Yoga on a regular basis? What have you found as the benefits? I am pretty fit doing bike riding, and weights 3 X week and walk 10k steps at least a day but my flexibility has gone down a bit as I am getting older, I may just try to add more stretching to accommodate this but also wanted to consider Yoga as well if there were other health benefits. Thanks guys

Yoga has many flexibility and core strengthening benefits if you can stomach the bulls~~~ sun worship overtones, and the snooty, entitled women that gravitate to it. They’re nice to look at, but that’s all.

Hehe thanks Solomon! Love that show, I had to watch the Family guy stereotype compilation that followed.

Wally, I used to practice a style of yoga that was tailored to outdoor athletes called Power Yoga. Within three months of faithful practice I was in the best shape of my life.

Yoga made me feel light as a feather on top of my mountain bike, which allowed me to improve my riding skills like I’d never done before. The confidence and control my yoga body gave me was unlike any other kind of workout I’ve ever done in my life.

So why did I stop practicing? For one, I moved away from that particular yoga studio that was conveniently located five minutes from my house. But the main reason was that all of the unique head tilting of the poses aggravated my vertigo. I didn’t know it at the time, but after a shoulder injury forced me to stop practicing yoga for a year, the vertigo, for the first time in many years, finally went away.

Right now I’m creating a yoga space at home where I can practice a simplified but still powerful version of Power Yoga, just without all the head tilting. I’ve got a big mountain bike race coming up in November, and I want to be more ready for it than last year.

Many yoga studios, like you said, are full of obnoxious soccer moms. The instructors play the music at these places so f~~~ing loud that you can’t even hear them call out the poses. F~~~ that. If you live in a big city, then you are bound to have a lot of different kinds of yoga studios around you. Most of them offer a free first class. If you like that first free class you can usually sign up for a very reduced two weeks of classes to further test the waters. But honestly, classes are rather expensive.

So if you’re on a tight budget, then just find some YouTube videos that show you a complete routine, there are lots of them.

Like I said, I really liked Baron Baptist’s “Power Yoga.” He’s got a few videos up, so just search for them. If you want to start out with the basics — which will still do you a world of good in all sports and life — then search for “Sun salutations A and B.” That’s where all yoga routines start. It’s the foundation.

So give it a try and let us know what you think.

Thanks Hominid, I was thinking of trying to YouTube some Yoga videos and go from there, not much into going to gyms or studios, prefer working out at home.

Whatever you do, don’t go to yoga class. Chicks think is ok to fart while doing it

When you find yourself in the majority, it's time to reflect.

Yoga is awesome. Everything you could want to know is on youtube.

Get one of those posters outlining all the muscles and stick it on your wall. When you have a muscle pain you can look at the poster and figure out which one it is.

Then you just go on youtube and type: yoga trapezius or yoga glutes or yoga IT band, etc

I started with a general beginners routine. I just searched around but I cant find it.

From there I just kept adding to it over the years whenever I had an ache or a pain. I do very physical work so it keeps me full of energy and kills all stress.

The patience required is great as it forces you to slow down and think things through. Add in some meditation and you will see some amazing results.

Yoga was created by Men- monks in particular as it helped them to stay in a meditative posture for long periods of time.

While I’ve never tried it, I’ve a friend mid-50s and male who swears by it. He has some joint and arthritis issues which make many other forms of exercise difficult.

He only joined a yoga studio long enough to learn the correct forms, get advice, and so forth. He does his routine at home watching a DVD. He used to tell us stories that had us laughing out loud about the herd of freaks, goons, and simpletons at the studio he attended; nasty soccer moms, silly little girls on the carousel, landwhales, post-Wall harridans, and might-as-well-be-gay manginas all of them.

I did yoga for a few months and enjoyed it. I’m in reasonable shape, but was surprised by its subtle intensity.

I’ve been tempted to learn yoga from a book or online, but thought I’d overlook important details without a teacher.

I have been practising yoga for over one year and I am satisfied with the results. I am attending yoga classes once or twice per week and if I don’t have time I just do it at home (because I already know how to do it).

I think it is hard to start without the teacher (you will not know what mistakes are you doing), so I would recommend having classes at least first one, two months.

It is not only that my muscles became more flexible, I feel more healthy overall. Being more flexible even helped me when I started practising Krav Maga.
