Radiation doesn’t kill you straight away. It can burn your skin (radiation burns), but it’s main lethality is by changing the cell structure/organ function/DNA replication.

Depending on how ‘hot’ a source is it can kill you anywhere from about a minute to decades. Although you’d have to be pretty unlucky or stupid to get that much radiation to die instantly. The effects will set in very quickly though.

Many of those exposed at Chernobyl, including those who were unfortunate to be in the vicinity of the core, died in a few days.
