I like sticking with the older Windows operating systems as long as I possibly can. I will upgrade when I absolutely have to but I will try and do it as cheap as possible. I am currently running Win XP on a couple of machines and Win Vista Home on another.

However, the curtain has pretty much fallen on the practicality of those systems for anything important. I’m thinking my cheapest option would be a used laptop that has Windows 7. I haven’t heard a single bad thing about Windows 7. How much longer do y’all think it will be before Microsoft bails on their support for Windows 7?

I would like to think that it might go a couple of years before MS pulls the pin but perhaps that’s just overly optimistic and wishful thinking. I don’t think we’ll ever see another run like the one we had with Win XP.

    Opinions???

Basically to break down that document they are no longer putting out security updates for Windows 7, which in our current internet security state of affairs is very bad for everyone. Bite the bullet and go Windows 10 with a system meant to run it. If that is too much, load on the latest linux. Most daily chores run perfectly fine on a Linux system running Ubuntu.

I am hanging onto my win 7 machines as long as I can. Windows 10 is unpleasant bloated thing.

The only useful thing Windows 8 could do that previous versions couldn’t do was natively mount ISO files. Everything else was a DOWNGRADE in functionality. Have to use f~~~ing command prompt just to create an ad hoc local area network. You could do that with one click in previous versions of Windows. I don’t know about Windows 10, but I’ve heard it’s not much of an improvement. I’m in no hurry to upgrade at any rate.

    Agree.

I use windows 7. I’m terrified of 10 and it sucks because there’s a few games I want to play but will not by a computer with a new windows OS.

Computer manufacturers might want to take note.

I don’t know enough about Linux to do much with it, I would get a Mac except some high end games won’t run well. I will be using the equivalent of cuneiform clay tablets in the future.

Thanks for the responses. It’s most appreciated. The link that skinemaxJack gave us shows Windows extended support for Win 7 ends in Jan. 2020. Mainstream support is already gone.

I’ve been keeping a Linux OS in the back of my brain for a few years now but haven’t yet taken the leap. I think I’ll contact the developer of a certain application and ask them about Linux compatibility.

Reference the newer Windows operating systems, it’s interesting to note that I’m not the only one who likes to hang on to the older stuff. I have one very modest gaming machine that I intended to leave on Win XP indefinitely…

Unless you’re buying (NOS-New Old Stock), one cannot get Win 7 machines from OEMs anymore.

The Windows 10 UI is very good. There are also a lot of great under the hood technical improvements also.

Then again, I could write an entire thread on the things I hate about Windows 10. I was admin on Linux servers in the mid-late 90s, it’s not new. It is vastly improved though these days. I’m worried about Apple letting Mac whither on the vine.

Yeah, I know. There’s a used laptop with Win 7 on it that I found for sale at a local pawn shop. It’s a little pricey but I was thinking about it.

The good news is that I found out that the application that I was worried about will still run with WinXP or Vista but I have to run the online version only. I can’t download it to a computer that has the older Windows OS.

I can still stick with WinXP, at least for a little while longer… 😀

Windows 10 has its problems, but it really is the best OS to date. In the most recent update (the Creative update), you can defer Windows updates and if you go with Windows 10 Professional, you can set it so that you only get updates once they’ve been approved for businesses. Microsoft isn’t going to release an update to business machines until they’re 100% certain that all the bugs and kinks have been worked out. The home users are the guinea pigs that get all the crap dumped on them. You do NOT want to be a home user.

You need to remove Windows XP from the internet. Another bunch of NSA hacking tools hit the internet recently and everything up to Windows 10 is unsafe if not fully patched. A hacker described them as “god mode” for Microsoft.

Windows 7 will still receive security patches till 2020. Windows XP will get no security patches.

To me Windows 10 is foreshadowing the day when Microsoft makes Windows a subscription and or software as a service, so they can endlessly get you to pay for it.

That why it was 10 years ago this summer that I picked up Linux and started learning it.

As long as you don’t game, and even if you game older games, you should really just use Linux.

I’m using Win 8.1, but I refuse to update to 10. I am getting another laptop sometime this summer, and when I do I will be using Linux.

For everyone interested in switching to Linux, but hesitant about the learning curve, consider this option:

You can even play most Windows games on it.

I’ve decided to install Linux Ubuntu on a clean HDD and give it a try to see how it goes. I keep getting a ‘Permission Denied’ error message though during the installation. Still working on it.

I hear so many people talking about Linux I figure that there must be something to it…

    Update to previous post:

This is my first post since getting my Linux Ubuntu up and running. Linux is not at all as complicated as some folks say. Anyone considering Ubuntu should give it a try but you should practice a little bit first.

If you’re currently using Windows, I suggest that you turn your monitor around and face it into a mirror. Practice getting used to working with Ubuntu by watching the reflection, not the screen.

Also, to get the ‘feel’ of Linux Ubuntu, it helps to turn your keypad upside down and learn to type with your toes.

    Have fun… 😀
