Anonymous11This one may be trouble. It took out my main desktop though I was able to get it to roll back after many hours of struggle. Another client called after it f~~~ed up his media player defaulting to Windows Media player instead of iTunes as he had set it. Windows Media Player would not work either.
I noticed that they reset my deferred feature updates setting back to their defaults of taking them ASAP. I’ve noticed they are resetting other setting back to defaults too. Keep a sharp eye on any default settings that are important to you.
Does it ever occur to these dolts that I may actually want my PC running 24/7? Is it not possible that some people may actually begin working at 5AM? I don’t like being advertised especially with products I’ve f~~~ing paid for. Others are guilty too.
Oh well, I made sure I made a fresh image and boot media. I punted it to Saturday morning.
Sorry to hear you are having problems. Ironically, I am watching the film “I, Robot”. With the plot of the film being a good example why auto-update is a bad idea.
They still can’t figure out that we took them at their word when they said Personal Computer. Well, car-54, it’s not personal if you keep f~~~ing with my s~~~ every two weeks!

No insults intended. But, are you trying to prove the concept, “don’t fix it unless it is broke”, correct every two weeks?

Yep, this is frustrating – no provision for 24/7 ‘active hours’. One of the reasons Windows 10 was free I guess.

How could I possibly prove that?

Anonymous11I think this one might be the one where they get rid of the classic DOS prompt leaving only Powershell. Powershell is very powerful. The malware guys think so too.
I’d like to defer it for a bit longer, but I cannot. I had planned to do some tax accounting work for 2016 at 5AM and could not due to this 1607 crap. Last year they did a feature upgrade and made me lose spreadsheets I had spent about five hours on and had not saved, because I did not expect to have an update happen. I just got tired then went to sleep expecting to be able to continue working the next day.
The funny thing was when I fired up my laptop to handle some work. It offered to install the same feature update. I was like hell no. I had my 6AM sysadmin work to do. I warn my clients using Windows 10 to make double damn sure they keep an eye out on these forced upgrades. Your sales presentation could end up being two hours of being warned not to power off your computer while we update some things as your battery dwindles to nothing.
I may have to cough up for Enterprise at least for my main PC. The Home edition gives even less control.
It’s really a shame as the Windows 10 user interface is very good. The builtin backup is very good too. It’s hands off. I was shocked at how reliable it is.
The worst one for me as when an update killed my ability to run VMs on my server for two months until they fixed it. There were so many updates I could not troubleshoot it.
You’d think they’d test a DELL PERC RAID controller properly as it errored on line 262 in perc.sys. I hear there are a few PERC RAID controllers out there floating around.
Word of advice: Once you get a stable SR version of any operating system – disable auto updates like I do. (because I’ve always had pirated software – I will never pay a dime to eugenicist Billy Gates – disabling updates stops MS attempts to may you pay)
Once it’s stable – you don’t need no f~~~ing updates.
P.S.: Antivirus is also a scam. You don’t need any of that s~~~ if you have commons sense
Take it how it is from a hacker who hacked the US elections LOLproud carrier of the 'why?' chromosome

Anonymous11You can only delay the updates on Win 10 Professional. Home edition gives you zero control. You can tell it to notify you on Pro with some delay control otherwise it’s update with no warning which was how I got burned on my spreadsheets.
I may setup a WSUS server if it’ll give me more control. I need to research it. I cannot live in fear of not having my business machines being available whenever I need them.
Hurricane Matthew laid waste to my server room. I had rain 2 feet from my server and Cisco rack. I lost no hardware though. I know another IT guy that had his gear get hit. His insurance company gave him s~~~ for having enterprise gear in his home.
Antivirus is dead. It’s so 1995.

“Don’t fix what’s not broken” – is one of the biggest wisdom revelations I had in my life.
Once everything works fine – don’t update – make backups instead. If all your periphery works fine – f~~~ it – you can live with working XP or 7 forever. Updating is idiocy like antivirus
I know it’s a very radical idea, but I thought I would voice it. It makes a whole lotta sense if you think about itproud carrier of the 'why?' chromosome

Once upon a time Window 10 pro can have the ability to do that, now it is remove for enterprise only so people will pay subscription for enterprise.

I am thinking of running Linux with VMWare (Windows emulation software) so I can set the network off in the emulation software and they cannot update anything to screw me up.

Anonymous11Thanks Gnostic.
The one thing I hate most about Windows 10 is the constant changing and rearranging. I’ve read they are going to go with the same model for the next server version. That will be the death of them in the enterprise. We used to never let machines with scientific or process control applications ever be updated.
Their patching quality has very much deteriorated since they fired the QA team. This new CEO is going to destroy Microsoft which may not be a bad thing long term. I’ll even read some technet articles that are obviously not up to date. It used to not be this way.
You computer is not broke, but you are trying to fix it every two weeks by updating it.
Microsoft is doing it. It does seem like every two weeks too. They are breaking things left and right these days. I’ve never seen such poor quality coming out of both Microsoft and Apple. I think they fired their competent programmers.
@russky: I had antivirus trigger on a little program I wrote for myself. There was no malicious intent. It was an Excel add-in done in VB.NET. One day the antivirus just decided it was a virus and removed it from my PC. I sort of laughed, exempted, and recompiled it from the source then restored it.
I’m at war with iOS 10.2 right now.
This p~~~es me off to no end. They overrode my choice to defer updates on purpose. Here is something that should work for 1511:
Deferring Window 10 Pro via Local Group Policy
I did what it said in the article. I set it to 8 months. I rebooted PC and Group Policy applied. I then ran Windows Update and am no longer on track for 1607 for at least a year. That is unless Microsoft decides otherwise. There is another Current Branch Feature Release scheduled for April 2017 (1711).
Basically, you manually force your Windows 10 Pro PC to be on the Current Branch for Business release(CBB). I also intend to delay Windows Security Updates for a few weeks too.

I’m not updating anything, it does it by itself, that’s the point of my original post.

#GenderSegragationNow!Operating systems market desperately needs competition, Microsoft is just getting worse and worst with every new iteration, no privacy, no control over updates, security issues, etc. I am also very wary of going on Win10. Also i have zero trust in their business ethics. They have way too much power not due to financial statements or market cap but by owning linkedin and leading operating system with serious privacy and security concerns i really see the need for alternatives.
The choices we make, not the chances we take, determine our destiny
Kind of why I still run windows 7 and plan to move mostly to linux for most things.
A MGTOW is a man who is not a woman's bitch!
All you have to do is kill the Windows Update service and you won’t get ANY updates EVER. The only side effect is it also prevents you from downloading any “apps” from the store, but seriously, who the f~~~ downloads apps from Microsoft’s retarded store anyways? Besides, if you want to download a stupid “app” all you have to do is temporarily enable the Windows Update service.
This could be solved by Microsoft simply giving me an option to NOT automatically restart. I restart my computer maybe once a month. I do NOT want to have to restart all the time and lose my work because of some STUPID update that I don’t even NEED! But Microsoft doesn’t care about me and others like me. All they care about is being able to force BULLS~~~ down everyone’s throat and not give them any options.
I have Windows 10 Professional so I figured I could just use the group policy to disable automatic restart. Unfortunately Microsoft released an update that makes the update service ignore the group policy and restart anyway. IT’S SO F~~~ING INFURIATING TO HAVE NO CONTROL OVER MY OWN GODDAMNED COMPUTER! So f~~~ ’em. I’m not letting them into my computer anymore. I don’t care about security updates or other BULLS~~~. I’ve killed the service and I won’t be updating again. Maybe if they make an update that makes it so my computer won’t automatically restart, I’ll re-enable the Windows Update service and let them back in. Until then, they can SUCK MY C~~~!

Anonymous11My laptop and Surface Pro took 1607 with no problems. I don’t mind restarting, but it must be at a place and time of MY choosing. I’m hoping I’ve set group policy properly, or Microsoft does not change anything again.
I’m getting ready to upgrade to Server 2016. I want to play with the Nano Server. In my research for this upgrade, Microsoft is catching hell over their overly aggressive automatic restart policy. I do see where most users are literally too busy to restart as everyone is doing the work of two. I’ve had execs admit this to me. They don’t like it as they know it hurts productivity and moral, but the US Government has forced their hand with the record amount of inane regulations over the past eight years.
Server 2016 plays it much more conservatively than Windows 10.
I’m seriously thinking about moving to Linux for my personal needs though I’ll never be free of Windows 10.
