I enjoyed my time involved in various cultural youth movements in my 20’s and it always seemed to me that it was always the guys pushing the boundaries and leading the way. Girls just followed on as we set the pace.

Did a little YouTube research and I think it was always that way. Guys drive the creativity and cultural movements of youth. Youth movements are music led and who makes the music?

I only know youth culture from a UK perspective. I’d be interested to know how youth culture evolves in your country, and specifically which gender drives it?

A few manifestations of youth cultre below, and its always the guys leading the way:

We lead, they follow. We have the drive and the urge to create. We make it happen.

    We just keep keep’in on

    Thanks Jim.

Howlin Wolf Rocks. But I think any music done well is worth a listen.

I’m sorry I messed up the post and put the wrong last track on twice 🙁

Maybe KM can delete those two (Prince and Princesses) for me?

    @roydal,

I didn’t understand for a moment then I figured maybe you were linking youth culture to degenerate societal decay? As part of an overall plan to destabilise the west?

I’ve watched this video of the defector before and he really lays it out clear as day how the left and Femminists are Useful Idiots. I didn’t link it with Music culture. I’d rather not make the connection as I enjoy different types of music too much.

Let me know if I interpreted your post correctly or if I’m way off track.

I think at this point that a remarkable amount of youth culture is produced by large conglomerates; that’s why most of it is forgettable garbage. There is still some good stuff out there (Seether and Placebo spring to mind), but it’s largely self-promoted. “Top 40” stuff is all very, very corporate, and mostly unlistenable. Note that with fancy enough computers, autotune can be used during “live” (hahahahahahahaha) concerts.

Not to – as I always do – drive things back to economics, but . . . given 40 years of collapsed wages, and massive unemployment (95MM out of the labor force BECAUSE THEY’RE UNEMPLOYED), it’s harder to just get by and survive while figuring out how to be a musician. I’m also not unconvinced that the influences of 70s and 80s musicians were more condusive to fantastic music than are the influences of today. No, not recursive error. I think that the jazz and blues musicians who were in the cultural background for 70s/80s musicians lent more in terms of proficiency and effort to the culture than does whatever bizarre hip hop and rap whatevers that influence the culture today.

Curmudge, curmudge. It is nice to be surrounded by others who feel that we’re in a declining empire.

As for television . . . yeah, I can’t really watch anything done after the early 80s. As for 21st century politically correct garbage . . . can’t breathe I’m laughing so hard. I grew up on Marvel comics. It’s sad that comic books from the 70s and 80s were more edgy, hard core, and controversial, dealing with more adult subjects in a more adult and literate fashion than are movies decades later. And, yeah, I’m tired of watching Size 0 princesses take out 275# henchmen without breaking a sweat in hand-to-hand. F~~~ Disney. F~~~ Disney and how they ruin everything they f~~~ing touch.

I think that actual youth culture today is almost entirely internet-based, and there’s some good stuff out there, from cartoons to, frankly, this web site.

Comics I like, some of which are very feminist or pc, but still just frankly remarkable.

There’s hundreds if not thousands more out there of similar quality. I like those, PC or not, because of the sheer quality of them.

There are also some fantastic vlogs out there – Stefan Molyneux instantly springs to mind. I think that’s also youth culture.

As for commercial broadcast radio and cable television? Probably as relevant as stage plays were in the 70s and 80s. As relevant as poetry in the 50s or 60s.

We’re either on the cusp of renaissance or collapse. I go back and forth as to which.

Maybe in some cases but not Northern Soul.

This music was out of production and people would travel to the states to buy up old worthless soul reccords from junk shops. At the time Funk was “In” and soul wasn’t being pushed by the corporations. There was no airplay on UK radio as the reccord companies weren’t making any money from it.

The whole scene was spread by Word of Mouth. The only people making money were the big dancehalls and even then not much as Alchohol wasn’t sold at all night events, (Amphetamine was the drug of choice). The fans themselves could make money on buying and selling rare reccords.

It was a rejection of corporate Disco and Glam Rock music being pushed at the time. This movement was built from the ground up by those that loved the music.

The corporations don’t always get their own way. Sometimes people decide for themselves what they want and go their own way 🙂
