When I travel, I usually go on road trips.

It’s been a cold/snowy winter and I have thought about taking a long weekend and flying somewhere warm. I have no desire to go overseas but have considered a few destinations in the US.

I have never flown anywhere for pleasure (only business) and a big part of that is due to the hassle involved in flying (mostly getting to the airport, getting through the airport, and the flying itself)….not to mention the expense. I price a couple of destinations and it is well over $1000 with at least half of it going to the airline. I keep thinking that maybe I should go somewhere but can’t quite pull the trigger on it.

What’s your take on travel and flying in general? .

Depends on your pocket… that’s it.

To those following me, be careful, I just farted. Men those beans are killers.

Ever since TSA I hate anything involving the airport.

I like travel, though. Somehow just getting “out of town” resets my perspective on where my life is and where I want it to be. It’s always a good experience and I think it makes me more productive and positive.

The destination isn’t as important as leaving your normal daily burdens behind you for several days and just enjoying the freedom of the open road. I say “open road” because I love road trips, but flying somewhere warm and renting a car to explore that region would work as well.

    I say go for it.

If you only have a few days this time of year. Fly to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, rent a car, and drive down to the Florida keys. It’s peak season so hotel rates are high. All along the overseas highway are great fishing and snorkeling. Best seafood in the country. Key West is a great historic town. Great party place. Best of all the weather is great. I was there two weeks ago and it was hot. There’s also some nice shorty cruises to the Bahamas. Try Royal Caribbean or Norweigan Cruise lines for short cruises. Much cheaper than hotels. Don’t wait till mid March. That’s when spring break starts prices of everything skyrockets.

Traveling would be worthwhile if it were convenient. But it’s not. Also, don’t go to Miami. Born and raised here, this area is a f~~~ing s~~~hole. Miami hasn’t been a worthy travel spot in decades.

    Overrated.

    Grass is greener fallacy.

Some places are beautiful, but like women, none are really worth the risk getting there and back.

I’ve flown a few times on business and the last time I flew pretty much soured me on flying. My flight was canceled, it was a hassle, and they lost my luggage to top it of.

Good points. I have thought about a road trip to someplace at least slightly warmer if nothing else. I have been in a rut as of late and worn out by the winter weather.

I don’t think I would enjoy a cruise and being stuck on a boat for days. Key West sounds like fun tho.
Thanks for the tip about the prices…did not realize that prices go up so much at that time.

Really? I figured it would be great since you don’t have to deal with the cold or winter weather. Summers are probably a bitch, eh? Although I think I’d rather take a hot summer over a cold/snowy winter.

If your flight was canceled how could they possibly lose the luggage? That’s just terrible.

S.A.D. is real. Break away for a bit. You’ll be glad you did.

The weather isn’t as nice as you’d think. It’s usually hot and muggy, furthermore the people are terrible and don’t know how to drive. The Hispanics drove away anyone who used to call this area home, so it’s an area filled to the brim with rude Latin Americans who seem fresh off the boat (less than 50% of the people here speak English, look it up). Everything is overpriced, the main nightlife is just bars and clubs, nothing special. If your goal is to sight-see or fish, you may have fun, but you can do that elsewhere. Let’s just say when Florida sinks into the sea, I won’t miss it.

Well, I’m in my 40s and have never been on an airplane or travelled any where far for pleasure.

I’ve always noticed that when most people come back from distant holidays they are more miserable after the trip than before.

I don’t think their far off vacation lived up to their expectations.

Any way, I’d rather spend my money on fine dining and high end escorts in my area.

Our flight was routed to another airport and we had to catch another flight in between. That probably had something to do with it.

Yes it is and I do need to break the routine for a few days. If I don’t fly, I will at least consider a road trip.

I’ll take your word for it and avoid Miami…..although the cold and snow that drags on for months can make ya wish you were anyplace warm.

I don’t feel so bad now. Heh.

I’ve always noticed that when most people come back from distant holidays they are more miserable after the trip than before.

Is it because they had the time of their life and don’t want to go back to their daily routine? Or they are tired because the trip is so exhausting?

    Meh
    Traveling is over rated.
I travel to get away from people, not to be in a place over flowing with them.
    I’ll drive myself TYVM.
I rarely fly, and here is no damn way in the world I’d do greyhound.

Mostly for me, the novelty of a “new place” wears off in a few hours because it’s the same as anywhere else, just different languages and different levels of ignorant people.
I really dont want to be around lots of people at any time anyhow.

There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it

In the internet age where you can look up photos of anywhere and anything you want to see I think takes the fun and excitement out of seeing things first hand. Save your money. And besides, not many people who travel come back more interesting for it anyway.

So much shade being thrown in this thread.

I love to travel. The exotic foods, the cool places, and natural wonders of the world… Looking out over the grand canyon, swimming at the great barrier reef, sleeping overnight in a castle, swimming with stingrays, riding on a dolphin, walking along the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, going to a koala sanctuary to hold a koala… Walking across the natural bridge in Aruba (before it got destroyed by hurricanes), holding a live octopus in my hands, Stonehenge, the Roman city of Bath, visiting a topless beach, eating in a revolving restaurant overlooking the Swiss Alps… White water rafting… Taking boat tour underneath the Niagra falls, going to Ripley’s Believe it or Not, a visit to the Hershey factory, Taking a riverboat to the very castle that inspired Walt Disney’s castle… You guys are missing out on so much worldly experiences if that’s how you think about travel. Or maybe you’re just not doing it right.

Yep, I can’t believe how negative you lot are. See the world. There is more to it than just your own backyard. You will see and experience things that will open your mind and broaden your understanding of things. Sure, the USA is great and in some ways you can find a lot of great things there. But getting out of your comfort zone and going somewhere strange and wonderful with weird food, foreign language and different customs is amazing. My passport is almost full with stamps from Asia, Europe, USA and so on. A lot of places I won’t go to for my own safety and a lot of them I will return to for sure. Like Japan for instance. Or even here in Estonia where I am this week. Airports suck. Flights suck. Even some hotels suck. But I would not give it up unless bad health forced me to. Anybody who doesn’t travel is doing themselves a disservice and I think, wasting a good part of their life.
