I go to a lot of auctions in my area. I’ve noticed a down trend that might just be local. The largest one in the area recently closed. Others are drying up. Anyone else frequent auctions and have an idea if this is localized or not? I’ve heard that the economy is making auctions more enticing to lower income families and that estate sales are increasing in popularity. Also weemon seem to love to spend their hubbies hard earned cash there.

I am an avid antique shopper. I have found better constructed furniture that is over sixty years old, at a lower price, than can be found in new furniture.

I have noticed anywhere from a 20% to 50% drop in prices. You have to keep you eyes open for those shop that are over priced on crap. For the most part, I go to shops that are independently owned, not the “Antique Malls” because there is any where from a 15% to 25% mark up on prices to cover the fees of having a booth at the mall.

So yes I have noticed this as well. Interesting in that I live in Texas and the economy has been doing well here. Perhaps despite the availability of jobs, there is a lack of disposable income.

The supply of durable goods that you find at auctions is likely drying up. Most stuff now is disposable and not worth trying auction. The millenials who should be buying up most of this stuff are also broke.

I guess the economy is in dire straits if people don’t have anything else to give away to make a little easy cash at an auction. I’ve seen so many documentaries about people taking out more and more credit cards to buy stuff they couldn’t ever need. Just sat through a budgeting refresher course and they talked about the avg household drowning in debt and having innumerable credit accounts. That’s how a lot of companies stay in business. If the floor doesn’t fall out from under everyone in under a day maybe they’d catch on and liquidate? Or maybe they’ll never realize that their wives won’t stay with them no matter how much s~~~ they throw their way.

Property taxes are a pet peeve of mine. You know what the “property” being taxed is, right? It’s you. Don’t pay the protection money and you know what happens. If they can take it because you don’t pay the protection then you never really owned it and they in fact own it and you (because your labor is always being confiscated to pay someone’s property tax). But back to the topic…a lot of people will not sell quality items when the economy has been s~~~canned as thoroughly as Mr. Obama has managed. So the inventory you see at auctions is going to be either junk people just want to get rid of or, less commonly, quality items they are forced to sell at a loss due to dire economic straits. Also, anything collected goes in cycles as things get bought up and remain in a private collection until somebody croaks. You get real dry spells even in good times. It could also be demographics driving some of this.

I had this realization about 6 months ago. Hit me like a ton of bricks.
