Perhaps you lads can help me.

I’m repopulating MAME on my desktop PC (a PC I’ve had for years but not one I normally use for games). I’m trying to remember the name of a classic arcade game.

It came out in the early 90s, for memory (I played it in the arcades on the way home from uni each day). It was a top-down shooter, that for memory could take two players (though I never played with anyone else). Sort of like an updated Ikari Warriors in that sense.

Anyway, you played through a series of underground complexes, trying to get to a final room then move on to the next. Baddies shot at you, you shot back.

That probably sounds like a million games, so I’ll mention two things that made it stand out –

    – in later levels, the bad guys had dogs with them. You’d remember those if you played it – they were hard to see and very fast moving, very deadly.

    – you had the ability to flatten yourself against the wall if you were being shot at. This was the main thing that set it apart from other top down shooters like Commando or whatever.

Does anyone know the name of this game?

A friend played a game very like that in the mid-1990s. He said it used the “wolfstein engine.” However, it was not a WWII setting, like Castle Wolfstein. In other words, I don’t remember either. Sorry mate.

Society asks MGTOWs: Why are you not making more tax-slaves?

I think you’ll have to be more specific about this game!

Yeah it’s a bit vague… if you’d played it, you’d remember that ‘flattening yourself against the wall’ element, it was novel for the time. O well, thanks anyway guys.

Blackthorne? (the flatten against the wall suggests that)

Found what you meant and that’s not it, but thanks for the effort 🙂

Can you give a definition of the protagonist?
