Interesting. This gentleman sounds like a bit of a maverick. Liked war when it gave him action, got bored and disobedient in peace. Sounds like a great soldier but I think his politics may be born of his time and also his frustration with no longer having a military career.

I think that overall there is some truth in the notion that war is a racket from which the citizen soldier comes out very badly -pays for it in taxes and goes off to serve for no great rewards but at the risk of his life. This is undeniable.

The modern soldier however gets a very cushy life in return for little risk in the west. I often note that there are more fatalities in my job in many years than there are in the whole British army. I sometimes work for a college re-training ex soldiers into my trade -they like it as it looks a bit more exciting than many civilian jobs (at least from the outside). What I find I do need to warn them is that there will be no big organisation to care for you, the pay will be a fraction of military pay and that any act of courage is considered dumb, probably toxic masculinity, and possibly criminal by the health and safety culture. Take a risk in a dangerous situation in the military and you might get mentioned in dispatches. Take a risk in the trade and you will be mocked and maybe fired. Today the military is not such a bad deal compared to civilian life but there are not real wars with equal opponents on.

One should bear in mind that General butler’s ideas were very fashionable after world war one and the whole of world war one was essentially re-told as a disaster for the common man, managed by useless officers and organised by power corrupted imperialist politicians. The reality was that the war was an economic disaster. Empires were mortgaged for sums that were unrepayable just to expel the Germans from the corners of some countries. Nothing of economic value was gained. That is why the war was a total failure. War can be a brilliant means of securing the safety and prosperity of a nation but it has not been used as such for a long time now.

A woman is like fire -fun to play with, can warm you through and cook your food, needs constant feeding, can burn you and consume all you own

Big wars are made. By definition, they have to be.

Smedley Butler is the highest decorated Marine. A couple years ago a marine on this site said when he went to training camp, his instructors began by glorifying Smedley Butler – for his participation in war that is, not his change of heart afterward.

I heard a talk where Jordan Maxwell compares war to a boxing match. A promoter picks the two fighters, then schedules the ring, promotes the fight, and the people come and watch. That is war – a promoter (a bank) picks the two countries, and everyone gets their popcorn and watches.
