I am new to guitars. I have messed around with them in the past but have never owned one. Would any of you recommend a good starter acoustic guitar. I really want something in the 150-250 dollar range. Thanks.
For years I messed around with guitars and bought cheap ones in that price range. I finally bought an American Fender Stratocaster online (its the premium model – the best they make) and my GOD WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I honestly recommend spending more, in the $500 – $600 range. You will sound better, have more fun playing, and by buying a cheaper model you will actually slow your growth as a guitarist. The guitar I bought used online I bought for $600 and its easily worth $2,000 new. In Canada we have KIJIJI I am not sure what you have in the states, or wherever you are, (Craig’s list?) but I would buy used online and do your research.
Also, what I found last year is that right around x-mas guys will start posting their guitars online because they need the cash, which is how I got a premium instrument, not even played, for 1/3 of the retail price. These guys have a dozen guitars and the wife gives them a hard time and they need to sell one to by pumpkin an x-mas present.
Having said all that I haven’t upgraded my acoustic yet so I am still playing a $150 guitar that is decent. I am at work and can’t remember the brand but I will post it here when I have had a chance to check at home.
But seriously look online for used. You will get a better instrument.
Martin and Taylor are the best brands, but you won’t find one of those in that price range. I’ve tried Takamine (I think that’s how it’s spelled) and those are pretty inexpensive and easy to play (good action). Martin and Taylor both make miniature guitars in that price range. Check out a mom and pop music store and price the used stuff. Good luck with guitar.
"Don't follow in my footsteps...I stepped in something."
I have a Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar which is in your price range but not sure if they’re still available but you can get slightly better model up in FG range.
Great guitar for the money but best advice is get the better quality that you can afford.
As the guys say above my post a cheap guitar is a waste of time and will put you off playing very quickly
And men are deploying the most devastating weapon of all β indifference. In this final battle who cares least wins.

Anonymous42I got drunk one time and light one of those cheapies on fire and continued to play it while flames came out the hole from the lighter fluid inside, man I could strum fast with that fire burning the strings and lowering the notes out of sight the longer I played through the flames!
Electric guitar I recommend for a beginner, it’s like power steering vs. a mack truck! Learn on electric then add acoustic after your fingers strengthen up.
12 string is the most exhausting as each note is double the work when ripping through the scales.
You’ll go nowhere on s~~~ skis, chump boots, and garbage bindings, same with a guitar, that’s why I set it on fire!
My favorite guitar is a Gibson SG, beautiful neck, the fingers don’t have to work and the intonation so clean it whistles!
You can’t learn on a guitar that always needs compensation from the player. You don’t even know how to play, how can you make the necessary compensations? That comes after playing something that sounds clean and nice.
If you get the cheapie, I’ll supply the lighter fluid and matches! We’ll make another flaming hot video titled strumming on fire! The last one was lost in a hard drive crash!
Damn I’m owning a cheapie
Not sure if this is reliable but here goes
Hereβs how to go cheap and get the most bang for your learning buck!
Thanks I will defiantly look into craigslist
Yep, you definitely want to get something decent if possible, because its hard to get a good sound out of a poor piece of equipment. Do you have any mates you trust that are decent guitar players? If you do, see if they can come with you and check out a few guitars as you may be able to find something that sounds good at a cheaper price than the premium guitars.
As mentioned before though, Taylor, Martin, Yamaha, Fender, Gibson make decent gear. Try a few and see what sounds best. Either way its a great thing to learn, so have a go and i’m sure you’ll have fun.
It isnt always easy though, so put in the time and you’ll get the reward. Check out youtube for tuition videos as there’s heaps of good stuff on there these days. π
Don’t put a lot of money into a guitar, until you have a damned good feel for playing. Lot of reasons, first if you do not take to it like a fish to water you are only out a small amount. Second and really the important one once you get the feel for it and enjoy playing you need to go play a lot of styles to find out what fits right for you.
To save your fingers to start look for a thin neck classical. You can play longer and practice more on classical strings then regular wire strings.
mgtow is its own worst enemy- https://www.campusreform.org/
Get a cheap guitar if you are beginning playing and if you ever move up (like spend a few years playing it basically being able to play i don’t know 20 plus songs) then get a more expensive one to show you are into the hobby.
You do not need to buy a 500 plus dollar guitar to never pick it up again after you got bored being forced to sell it then far less of what you payed for it.
Also i recommend getting a guitar used over buying it in the store but make sure once you get it to replace the strings and then buy backups (i have broke the strings about 3 goddamn times and it really f~~~s up the experience).
Just an east coast asshole who likes to curse, If you get offended by words like fuck, cunt, shit, piss, bitch or any racial slurs then you just scroll down.
