I went into town yesterday to find myself a cutting board (ended up just going to the DIY place and buying a piece of wood to make one myself) and I noticed that the barber I used to go to had a sign in the window reading ‘for rent’. I peered through the window and even though they had covered most of it with ads I could see the room behind it was completely empty even the counter got ripped out.

Over 2 years ago I was a regular in that place. They cut my hair, they didn’t make a fuss about it, the price was ok and most important of all I was in and out of there in 30 minutes flat. It was run by the time by an older women until one day I walked in and it was clear from the start that it was under new management. New stuff, some new staff and the new owner (a woman with, I kid you not, blue hair) running around telling everyone what to do. I could tell she was the owner because people grudgingly did what they were told. The older woman that used to run the place was no where to be seen so which prompted me to ask one of the older staff members if the place was under new management which got affirmed with a hushed yes.

As per usual I walk up to the counter to ask if they could fit me in and if they could do it in 30 minutes or less and the ‘new’ girl behind the counter didn’t even flip through her appointment book and just pointed me to the waiting chairs. There was only one other person there so I figured it wouldn’t take long even though most of the barber chairs were occupied.

20 minutes later I was still sitting there… I was still sitting there not because those women in those barber chairs and the staff behind the barber chairs had complex dye jobs or anything like that but because the owner would constantly intervene in their work which in turn resulted in a whole bunch of bitching and moaning when she went into the back room.

After a good 30 minutes waiting I was about ready to walk out of the place when it was finally my turn. I still needed my hair cut so I sat down and one of the ‘new’ girls got assigned to me.

“How do you want your hair cut”
“Short, a little longer on top, shorter on the back and shave all that frizzy stuff off the back of the neck and clear the ears a little”

Now at this point it should be noted I don’t have a difficult haircut and I am happy as long as I can go to work without people asking “wtf happened to your hair”. In fact considering the amount of women that they have in those places I would have expected that cutting a man’s hair is like taking a break while working but I digress.

So this girl starts working… and chatting… and getting interrupted by her boss… and cutting a little more and I kid you not it took over an hour and she was literally getting nowhere.
When the owner intervened again I asked both of them how much longer this was going to take and both of them snarled at me that it was going to be done when it was going to be done. I reminded them that I asked if it could be done in less than 30 mins and they said yes and it had been an hour and a half already.

They had the nerve to snarl at me again and the owner stomped off huffing something about asshole male customers and I just lost the plot completely. I ripped the hair dresser thing off from around my neck, checked my hair in the mirror and yelled loud enough for people outside to hear

If you’re going to treat your customers like s~~~ and not even have the decency to tell me it’s going to take a little longer than planned after I specifically asked multiple times how long it would take then you’re going to be f~~~ing bankrupt soon.

I turned around and walked out grabbing my coat on the way. I didn’t pay because well my hair barely had been touched, went to the nearest sundries store, bought myself a trimmer and I’ve been using that to cut my hair ever since.

So now about 2 years later, and frankly it took longer than I expected, they are done. Closed and hopefully never to torment another customer with their bulls~~~ again.

I just feel bad for the poor guy married to any of those stupid c~~~s that will now most likely sit at home whining about how ‘terrible customers’ ruined their business.

I humbly submit to you that most women are bad for business unless that business involves selling sex.

This attitude is rampant everywhere. You call for customer service, and some f~~~ing dozey broad on the other end says “hold for a minute” and disappears for 15 minutes. When she comes back I said “can you imagine what it’s like to be a customer dealing with you?”….. don’t say “1 minute” when it’s gonna take 15. Or come back after 3 minutes and say “Im still working on it please continue to hold”. I’ll be back in 5 minutes again.

That c~~~ left me with no vertebrae. It was awesome. But ask a woman for “just a splash of whole milk” in my coffee and she will f~~~ it up every time. I actually have to ask them to TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO SAY FOR THEM TO GET IT RIGHT – because “please” doesn’t work either.

Reminds me of pretty much every call I ever had with a phone service provider. Get reconnected to a different department every few minutes and every time you get asked what your goddamn postal code is.
Customer service is so rare these days that giving good customer service is actually a unique selling point for a business.

Even if you tell them they still find a way to interject their own bulls~~~. How hard is it to cut a guys hair and shut up while you’re doing it… no you have to explicitly tell them exactly what to do and how to act during it.

Trimmer for years here. A little cleaning, a little oiling and you are good to go. Never again will I be in a “barbers” chair while some hairdresser type fiddles away precious time. And then the expected tip. None for me please.

When it comes to my haircuts it HAS to be a male barber at a male owned shop that NO women would even THINK of entering.

Couple of funny stories,

One of my first hair cutting experiences on my own I discovered this old school barbershop run by two older Italian men. They had this great looking receptionist that offered me a coffee and choice of magazines which included Playboy and Penthouse,no PC BS here!

The Barbers were very professional and spoke freely like men even with the bimbo in earshot,which I really liked as well,great cut,good price and in/out fast.
Too bad places like that don’t exist anymore.

The second best experience (or maybe it should be first)
was an escort (I kid you not) that used to own a barber shop in her home country of Columbia and now was saving up to open one up here. ( I really respected her work ethic,lol)
So along with getting her usual services,I’d often get a trim as well,which has always been a fantasy of mine.
Unfortunately it didn’t last long because she made her money fairly quick (she was a 11+ IMO) and moved on with her business plans.

The receptionist was probably one of their daughters. That’s why she was used to the language. When those Italian barbers get to talking, though, I’ll bet their hands are flying and you’re getting nervous watching those clippers wave around. I love the places where they still put the hot towel around your face while they give you a scalp massage. Few and far between…

From the way the owner was acting, it sounds like a hobby operation. The shop was probably bankrolled by the owner’s husband who had a real job so blue haired wifey could pretend to be a “strong and independent” business owner. It took two years for his money to run out. Doubtless she’s already divorced him by now.

That’s my best guess too.

I live near an old New England mill town. Like many similar towns, the remaining mill buildings have been re-purposed in various ways. The result is a nice “walkable” downtown of a few square blocks with bars, restaurants, shops, apartments, and whatnot. There are probably a half dozen store fronts which are nothing more than Keep Wifey Busy/Happy operations.

These faux businesses are usually boutiques, knickknack shops, “antique” stores, and other such nonsense. They tend to last 18 to 24 months until playing store is no longer fun or the husband’s money/patience runs out. One is a frozen yogurt franchise which, while it doesn’t actually close for long, always has a new owner in the shape of a delusional middle aged woman who thinks they can succeed where everyone else has failed.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.
