US missile strike in Syria: What we know so far about target, victims & reactions

    A short summary

The US launched a missile strike on a Syrian airbase, killing at least six people, including civilians, and wounding several others. Reactions to the operation continue to roll in, with Russia condemning it while EU countries and others express support.

US President Donald Trump ordered the military strike on an airfield in Shayrat, near Homs, which resulted in a Friday pre-dawn attack in which 59 Tomahawk missiles were deployed.

The Syrian Army called the strike “blatant aggression,” stating that it makes the US a partner of Islamic State and other terrorist organizations

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he regards the strike as an “aggression against a sovereign nation,” according to his spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He also said Putin believes the strike was carried out “in violation of international law” and “under an invented pretext.”

Moscow also vowed to take “a number of measures” to strengthen and improve Syria’s air defense system in order to protect “vital parts of Syrian infrastructure,” according to Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov.

Up to 86 people, including 26 children, are alleged to have been killed in the chemical attack, with images showing civilians choking and fainting, and some foaming at the mouths.

Washington has accused the Syrian government of being behind the “barbaric” attack.

However, Russia’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed that the chemical release was the result of the Syrian Army destroying a rebel warehouse where chemical weapons were being produced and stockpiled before being shipped to Iraq. The ministry called the information “fully objective and verified.”

The Russian military said only 23 of the 59 US cruise missiles reached the Syrian air base.

Syrian state media said four children were among the nine civilians killed from the US strike, however it’s unclear why children would have been on the air base.

Earlier, the Russian President said Donald Trump launched the attack under a “far-fetched pretext”, according to a statement from his spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“This move by Washington has dealt a serious blow to Russian-US relations, which are already in a poor state,” the Kremlin said.

The strongly worded statement came as Moscow suspended a bilateral agreement with the US that prevents midair collisions over Syria.

The memorandum, signed by Russia and the US in 2015, allowed both countries to exchange information about their flights to avoid incidents in the crowded skies over Syria.

The US missile strike violated not only international, but also US laws, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said, adding that the attack was “on the verge of a military clash with Russia.”

“Instead of an overworked statement about a joint fight against the biggest enemy, ISIS, the Islamic State [terrorist group], the Trump administration proved that it will fiercely fight the legitimate Syrian government,” Medvedev wrote on his Facebook page.

The Syrian Army also completely denied deploying chemical or toxic material, stating that it “has not used nor will use” such materials “in any place or time, neither in the past or in the future.”

Once-dedicated passengers are now disembarking the ‘Trump Train’ following his administration’s actions against Syria. Previous supporters made public their opposition to the US president’s missile strike.

The US attack on Syria’s airbase is meant to “bolster terrorist morale” after the significant setbacks the jihadists have suffered at the hands of the Syrian army over past few weeks, President Assad’s political and media adviser, Bouthaina Shaaban said.

“The United States felt that they have to save the terrorists and lift their morale. And the proof for that is that Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are the ones who supported this attack, and they are the very countries who had been facilitating the coming of terrorists and arming them against the Syrian people and against our country,” Shaaban said.

The Syrian government cannot be held accountable for the Idlib incident, which was used as a pretext for the US cruise missile strike, Shaaban stated, since the Syrian government did not control the area of Khan Sheikhoun where the alleged chemical attack took place.

Syria has previously surrendered its chemical weapons stockpile, and international organizations confirmed that the Syrian military did not possess any weaponized poisonous substances.

Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah said on Friday a U.S. cruise missile strike on a Syrian airbase was an “idiotic step” which would lead to “great and dangerous tensions” in the Middle East.

Hezbollah, which supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the six-year-old conflict, said in a statement the strike would not demoralise the Syrian army or negatively affect its allies. The U.S. military action was a “service” to Israel and its “ambitions in the region,” Hezbollah added, without elaborating.

US claims about the alleged gas attack which saw US President Donald Trump launch cruise missiles against a Syrian military facility should not be taken at face value, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone told RT

However the former Labour MP warned “all my life I have watched America announce it is doing this or that and it turns out to be untrue.”

Asked about the geopolitical implications of the strike in Syria, Livingstone said, “Unless you are prepared to send hundreds and thousands of ground troops into Syria you don’t have a great deal of influence.”

Livingstone pointed out that during the Nazi blitz on London, airpower alone was unable to break people’s spirits.

The lifelong Labour man was suspended from the party this week after an internal tribunal ruled his 2016 comments about the relationship between Adolf Hitler and Zionism had been inappropriate.

The British government says the US missile attack, which killed at least five people, was an “appropriate response” to the alleged chemical attack. It was in “close contact on all levels” with the US, and May was told in advance the strikes were going to take place. Britain was not asked to join in.

I hope this doesn’t mean we’re going to war with Russia…wrong enemy. This looks more like the beginnings to the apocalypse.

My English friend It’sallbs is right on point. It is the rebels who have used chemical agents in the past. Assad had NOTHING absolutely NOTHING to gain by their use so why would he? Use of that kind of weapon is a loser’s strategy…used in desperation. Assad isn’t losing he is winning. And isn’t it strange there just happens to be a camera available to record the events. And yes the absence of protective suits or masks when in an area where a gas attack is suspected—well that is unprecedented bravery now isn’t it?

No my friends this is a classic blackop designed to draw the US into the conflict and drive a wedge been the US and Russia. The real question is who and how much of the US government were behind this. Sadly there is also the possibility that Israel might be involved too. This is truly insane.

The only bright spot I see in this is the fact it demonstrates Trump will pull the trigger—so I can think of a little North Korean dough-boy who isn’t sleeping well now.

Could this be an intended part of the objective?

Exactly, meanwhile they try to gain public support by showing horrific images of injured children.
And by the way if anyone thinks the media are above completely faking images and using “crisis actors” think again.

I suspect there was no gas attack by anyone and it is a hoax.

I don’t know if any other English people noticed or pondered this but…

Why would you allow a politician to try to revive someone dying on a bridge whilst several emergency doctors in orange jumpsuits stand there watching texting on their phones?

A little strange wouldn’t you say?

I’m afraid the world is run by pure evil and nothing is beyond them.

I’m sad to say it is almost certain if it was a black ops that there was UK involvement or at the very least full knowledge of it.

Our idiot puppet politicians have been praising Trump’s actions all day.

Apparently May knew that Trump had orederd strikes.

They get put in charge of things they know nothing about Fallon is in charge of defence af the moment in a year or so he will move on to something else he knows f all about.

I believe that is the point.

The warmongers screamed for war and President Trump had missiles fired at a Syria airbase.

Suddenly those whom screamed for war are now backing off thinking this s~~~ just got a little too real.

Meanwhile, it turns out that the Syrians and Russians were warned in advance. There were only a few people killed, if any. And the airbase is still mostly intact. And those jets destroyed may have been mothballed.

This seems to be a case of political theater. The only question who is wagging the tail to whom.

The warmongers in the Pentagon are now trying to say that Russia is guilty of the gas attack but even bulls~~~ has its limits.

These warmongers need to ask themselves one question. Do they want to give the man they have been trying to oust from the presidency war powers.

I do not believe they have thought this one through.

    1. There’s no solid evidence that a chemical attack happened at all.

But let’s just pretend there is…

    2. There’s no solid evidence that Assad was responsible for the attack.

He has nothing to gain and everything to lose, but let’s just say he did…

    3. What the f~~~ does that have to do with the United States? Why are we attacking a sovereign nation that did nothing to us?

No matter how you look at it, Trump done f~~~ed up.

I do not disagree with you except on one point. President Trump did not f~~~ up. President Trump just pulled a fast one on those trying to start World War III.

This “chemical attack” seems to be a set-up by the deep state for four reasons. To have the U.S. attack Syria. Start a war between the U.S. and Russia. Divert attention from the “unmasking” scandal in the U.S. And try to use this to overthrow President Trump.

If President Trump did nothing the deep state would have used his inaction as a pretext to falsely claim he is a “russian agent” to falsely justify a coup against him.

So, President Trump did do something. But what he did appears to be action when it was not. Due to there not being any report of a high death toll, clearly those on the airbase were warned in advance to get out. If is reports are true the airbase is still functional and the only airplanes destroyed were under repair.

President Putin is likely in on this and he is using this as a pretext to send a Russian warship to Syria, but not to attack the U.S. warships in the area.

Now the Trump administration is talking about sanctions, not military action, as a follow up.

Sanctions will amount to nothing. But the media narrative the deep state is pushing to start World War III is stopped for the moment.

I told my students this morning that I hoped this was the reason why Trump sent the missiles. Russia told him not to attack Syria, so him doing so may help to dispel the “Putin’s puppet” narrative. One can hope, but I’m cynical nevertheless.
