The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.

Excellent thought. Yes, and one way I quickly confront any mild depression is change of surroundings. It does’t have to cost anything but a little shoe leather and the results are, at the least, usually rapid for me.

Going somewhere new, a museum, a library, an old bookstore, visiting a nursing home and volunteering for an hour to read to someone .. anything new where you haven’t been before tricks the “old repeating thought loops” in the brain and causes the mood to mildly swing.

I once had a friend who was an old school retired psychiatrist. We were both Ham Radio operators, and as he was getting older, I;d do some climbing for him and help him string and repair his tower and antennas. We were sitting next to his wood stove and having some hot chocolate on a cold winter day. He was married to a Norwegian gal who had trouble speaking english .. but that’s beside the point. Their marriage and what happened during the next few years is a story in itself.
The point is, he was the one who told me that he sometimes prescribed a change of surroundings, ranging from a day trip to a longer move, as one tool in his bag of recommendations. I totally respect those who dare to confront things in ways that are not exclusive to the medicine cabinet. I suppose if he was in practice these days he’d have to go solely with Rx drugs. It works for me, even just driving somewhere “totally new” allows me to clear my cobwebs and refresh my thoughts due to the new stimuli. Sometimes, when I work at home for extended periods over several weeks .. I need this type of breather .. so I just drive some new direction for a few hours.

Good on you! Travel always does well to a Man who wants to explore.

On top of your solid plans already, I highly recommend doing something that requires your own two hands- work on your vehicle, put a new shelf up in your living space, build a new shed even. Work that requires you to literally mold it gives you a visual representation of your own success. You don’t have to leave your house to find home – home is where your heart is.

Stay safe in your travels, brother.

Logic guides your actions, emotion guides your morals. Only you may decide how you use them.
