Tomb Raider’s De-Sexified Lara Croft Wasn’t Enough To Win Over Critics

not that I have any interest in the film anyway but even I noticed that this version was unattractive.

    from the article

The 29-year-old thespian was criticized early on by fans as being too frail, too small, and too flat to be Lara Croft. She was oftentimes compared to a muscular 12-year-old boy due to how small her frame is. Many gamers likened her casting to Hollywood’s penchant for pederasty.

This article doesn’t agree but the actress who played her in the rebooted games was fit and they should have made her the star of the film

still wouldn’t have wasted my money on it though and the article is a good read

She’s the type of woman that straight women find attractive, like Julia Roberts and that dog from Gray’s Anatomy. For men she is “Sure, if there isn’t anyone else and she brings some burgers I’d f~~~ her but really what else have you got?”

Let’s be honest though, they like casting small women in these roles because then they look even tougher beating up the huge dimwitted bad men.

Tomb Raider was basically just Indiana Jones with big t~~~. The original game for Play Station was pretty cool, but the movies are just a “Girl Power” spin off of the Indiana Jones action movie.

Original tomb raider games used to be a game about exploring tombs. They had a dark souls type exploration feel to them, because you could die in an instant from a trap. Now it’s just call of duty with t~~~.

The movies have never been any good.

Didn’t see the movie, didn’t think the first one was worth much, so no interest in a reboot. The pic of the girl in the thread is nice, but not hot. I thought the point was Laura Croft was a hot, empowered woman… I think they left off the hot.

No longer can we walk away, we must run. Remove the motive power.

“Tomb Raider’s De-Sexified Lara Croft Wasn’t Enough To Win Over Critics”

The person whom wrote the article does not understand. Lara Croft is a sex symbol. She is the female equivalent of Indiana Jones. The sexy adventurer, explorer, treasure hunter.

Say what you will about Angelina Jolie, but the first two Tomb Raider movies she starred in were okay to good. Not great, but good.

Unlike other “girl power” movies of that time, the writers of the two Tomb Raider movies had Lara show respect towards men. This included her subordinates, her co-workers, and even her rivals. This made a big difference for the tone of those movies. This sets the two Tomb Raider movies up from other “girl power” movies of that time, such as the Charlie’s Angels movies.

On the matter of the present SJW movies. Sometimes it feels like you want to bang you head against a brick wall.

These movies franchises are not hard to understand in how these films should be made.

These types of films should have some good T&A, some good action, decent acting, a little sex (not necessarily on screen), a work able plot, with a soundtrack that smooths over the emotional edges of the film, and the film is done. The film has some good advertising, makes back what it cost at the box offices, with a little extra profit, and the production crew moves onto make the next film.

On a side note, from the previews of the new Tomb Raider movie, it looks like the SJW production crew is only giving Lara Croft a bow and arrows to use, instead of her usual two semi-automatic pistols that she dual wields. That is like using Indiana Jones without his usual bullwhip and revolver.

Also, from the previews it looks like the producers of the film are dropping the hints from the game and previous movies that Lara Croft was retired military.

This should not be a gender flip version of Green Arrow’s origin story, which from previews of the film it looks like it is going to be.

All of the films, including the Jolie ones, lost the spirit of the games, which was exploration and occasionally having to shoot a tiger or not fall in a spike trap.

At least Jolie had t~~~ while also being athletic. She was also in the middle of a career and a highly-prized actress, not some random JV high school drop-out that nobody has heard of.

I saw a preview for this when I took my kid to see Thor, I’m watching her do stunts, and I’m thinking “The force of that fall, the way she’s catching herself with that knife, she just dislocated her shoulder, at least, but I’m supposed to believe this little waif doesn’t even feel it, climbs up, and then proceeds to drop a 300 pound samoan on his ass? Pass. I’ll just play Overwatch that night.”

Literally nobody believes it when they see a “female” action hero, because we all know that world-class female athletes perform at the level of 15-year-old boys, and that’s boring.

I disagree. There was some exploration in the two movies. The first movie had very interesting puzzles and traps in the film.

By the numbers, the plot of the first Tomb Raider movie was a solid mystery adventure plot, where the viewers did not know what would happened next, and the film held itself together very well.

The second movie had an okay plot, but the film suffered due to a generic main villain. Though, the shadow guerrillas were interesting.

At least Jolie had t~~~ while also being athletic. She was also in the middle of a career and a highly-prized actress, not some random JV high school drop-out that nobody has heard of.

Jolie was cast well as Lara.

This new Tomb Raider movie seems to be making similar mistakes as the remake of Conan The Barbarian (2011). No real star power, issues with the original aspects of the franchise with that was in the film.

This new Tomb Raider movies seems to be following the reboot Tomb Raider game of the Tomb Raider franchise, which has been claimed to be a Far Cry ripoff and was not well received by the Tomb Raider fanbase.

That is why Lara Croft was originally given a pair of semi-automatic pistols. To level the playing field.

Yep. Lara went into crypts mostly with just her wits, a spool of rope, and her pistols because economy of scale.

I stand corrected on TR 1. You are correct and that film was better than I remember it. Jolie was basically the physical manifestation of Lara Croft. This new girl? She kind of vaguely fits the mold of the 2012 game reboot, except the women doing costumes decided they could go flatter and used those stupid body wraps to make sure she could never be confused with a mature woman with agency.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I wanted to comment on the actress choices for Croft. I thought Jolie was a pretty good pick for the first films. She’s a decent actress, and she had the boobs. But like most women, she really doesn’t have an athletic look to her. I think audiences are used to this though. Audiences don’t accept that from men. Indiana Jones would fail if Harrison Ford didn’t have the muscle tone of what we’d expect from an adventurer.

For the current actress, my original thought was that she doesn’t have the boobs. Being a boob man, I was kinda insulted, and figured this was feminism forced my way. It probably still is. However, this actress is starting to grow on me. The previews are showing a lot of athleticism from the actress and you can actually see some muscle tone in the actress. I’m not saying it’s fully believable, but I like the direction. As for the boobs, the athleticism is making up for it. This version of Croft does feel less fake somehow. More raw.

I’m expecting this movie to be less about clever lines and special effects than the first two were. It looks like the story/writing is going to be better. I don’t really know.

FYI, in general, this push to put women in action hero roles without requiring them to be athletic has been a pet peeve of mine lately. You can’t justify the requirement of superman to be extremely toned, while wonderwoman is skinny with very little tone, yet both are supernaturally gifted with strength.

    Ok. Then do it.

I have recently watched the two Tomb Raider movies. Except for the CGI, the first movie has aged well. The second movie, not so much. But, the Tomb Raider films are a good two movie binge for an afternoon viewing.

Jolie was basically the physical manifestation of Lara Croft.

    We agree on this.

You sometimes have to wonder if those behind the making of these recent movies want the movies to be a hit, or a flop.

Actually, Jolie had a toned, athletic build during the making of the two Tomb Raider movies and that showed in those films.

I maybe in the minority here, but I will see this latest Tomb Raider movie. It’s just a debate if I’ll see it at the theater with the leather recliner seats, unlimited popcorn and blue icee drinks, or wait until I comes out in stores.

As far as the Jolie movies go, I actually enjoyed them. It’s the only movies with Angelina Jolie I actually loved. I even liked Gerald Butler in the Cradle Of Life. I have both movies on Blu-Ray and I hope some day they come out in 4K. In fact, because of this topic, I’m listening to the soundtrack to the movies.

Please, let us know how the film turns outs. If the film is worth watching.

Actually, I am watching the end of the first Tomb Raider movie right now. The sets for the movie are actually interesting to look at.

If I gave Angelina Jolie a free shot she would break her wrist or hand on my face, and I would barely feel it, sorry, but I can’t get into female action movie stars unless it is some badass kung fu stuff going on, even then I need to be pretty stoned to tolerate it.

I would have preferred the ‘game’ chick to have played the movie Lara Croft too, at least she’s attractive to look at.

That, and a push up bra. Which is how they marketed the posters and the cover. Her t~~~ aren’t really that big. Lara Croft/Tomb Raider was nothing but spank material for teenage boys. Once they took that element away and tried to make it a serious franchise, it lost it’s credibility.

On a side note the best real life version of Lara Croft I have seen was this woman at a fancy dress party. She was quite tall, curvy but not fat body and long legs. Never seen a woman top that, she was better than Jolie and the original model they based the game version of Croft on.
