Today I found a gift for my birthday (from an ex)

I have just found a gift my ex (so far one and only -together for 16 months) gave me when I was 27. We have been 1 month short of being one year together that time. But before I reveal what she got me, I ll go little back.

I have a car. I also have a radio in it, but its an old one – doesnt have CD/mp3 player. I have said few times back then to my gf when we were driving, that Im about to get a new radio. So one day when I was at her place she opened a closet and brought out a plastic bag. There was a radio in it. It had a CD player and she offered me to take it because she doesnt need it and its laying around th closet. I said I wont take it. It was an used radio but thats not the point – i didnt want to take it because in my mind I was like ‘if i change it, im gonna change it with new one, not some old model that was lying somewhere for quite some time’.
So i declined and told her tnx but no tnx. After couple of weeks that happened one more time and I declined again.

So what did she get me for my bday?

A radio. The one I was writing about :)) She also got me some other usefull stuff like socks and a towel but I couldnt and still cant understand how can someone bring you something you already declined twice as a gift???

I was like WTF!!! but didnt think much of it back then. Didnt even comment on it. Now when I found it im even more bewildered then i was back then. Im always trying to understand others actions by putting myself in their shoes or ask myself ‘would I do that?’ The answer is no, I wouldnt and be actually ashamed. I think the reason for this is that i meant so little to her that in her mind anything was good enough.

When I found it today I was like maybe I was/ I am overthinking things, but NO… IM NOT.

So she gifted you the old radio that was lying around and you having had denied her offer twice previously? She gifted it to you on your birthday?

My mother still does this to me to this day. It happened just yesterday in fact. The house I bought last year came with fridge, washer and dryer, so I needed to get rid of my old stuff. I mostly just wanted to get rid of it, so was willing to give it away. A friend of a friend took the washer and dryer, and my mother took the fridge for her garage. She sent a check in the mail for $300 for the fridge. I called her up and told her I was tearing it up because I couldn’t take money from my mother like that. But she kept insisting and I had to tell her that I wasn’t going to discuss it anymore.

Ok. Then do it.

In her head you still needed a radio and your opinion on the matter was not important. How many times do they buy you clothes you don’t like but insist they think it will look nice on you. Free choice, free speech, hell free anything is no longer applicable when you have a girlfriend. As for a wife you could ask for some rope as a gift and directions to the nearest tree for a quick escape.

Women are so bad, if they changed the law so I kept the house, I still wouldn't marry one. I'd rather be homeless.

Well it was unused and of no value to her, I note she bought you others things which were useful, women never give men much of monetary value.. What would she say getting a second hand radio ?

IMHO she is giving something she does not need or want, giving is meant to cost the person giving…

Their mindset is: “What gift would I enjoy giving?”
The infuriating part is when they
ask and ask and ask
what a guy wants, and then give him something else.

Even if it’s cheaper.

No one here mentioned the fact that it was an exchange of a useless resource (the unwanted radio) for something potentially useful (the money wasted on a new radio).

The ex used to love to say ” I enjoy giving gifts to others.” What she really meant was “what gift would I enjoy giving.” Subtle, but distinct. Thanks again experienced – it just occurred to me now.

Yet thinking back, with the rare exception, most of the gifts I received were cast-offs, like said radio, or super expensive gifts meant to manipulate and probabily funded by her mom.

Her parents loved me – why won’t they, I was buying a high mileage vehicle for full sticker price and take a huge liability off their hands.
