Alright, so as many of you know, I’m working in retail for a clothing store. What you may not know is that my location is currently losing a lot of employees due to them graduating/getting better jobs. Other than doing my best work and steering clear of drama, does anybody have any tips for maximizing the number of hours I’m scheduled for? Any extra skills I should pick up to make myself more valuable? During the Summer is when I am going to try to get more hours, as I’m not quite graduated yet.

Thanks, everyone. I’m loving all the new activity on this site, and I check the member counter nearly every day. Keymaster, you’re doing a great job on this site!

Reading between the lines, I am guessing they are keeping your hours below the cutoff line where they have to pay for Obamacare, workman’s comp, and all those other benefits. Am I right? If so, there is no way to solve this without getting yourself promoted into the ranks of lower middle management.

In general, an employee who has a strong work ethic is worth his weight in gold. Show up on time, do your assignments on time and completely, do not create office drama … you get the idea. Such a one will be the last on the layoff list and first on the rehire list.

Did you tell your supervisor that you want more hours?

Did you volunteer for the unpopular shifts

Definitely volunteer for unpopular shifts, particularly if they pay time and a half, which they probably don’t.

But RoyDal probably nailed it… most retailers and fast food outlets keep their staff on rationed hours to avoid legal requirements to pay benefits. If that’s the case, get another job in the same mall and work them both.

Words can’t describe how hard RoyDal nailed it.

I’m in retail too and, unless your store/chain is different, we can’t pull more than 25 hours a week outside of holiday season due to worker’s compensation cutoff RoyDal mentioned. The only way around that is, as RoyDal said, to get yourself promoted into a managerial role. If you’ve been there a while and the managers like you, you could talk about the possibility of being promoted.

Once again, as RoyDal mentioned, just showing up and doing your work efficiently is the way to go if you decide you want to shoot for management – I’m not accepting the offer, but the managers at my store have wanted to promote me for a while now, and all I do is show up, do my work in a timely and efficient manner, and be friendly with customers. No magic involved.
