The implication of some of the comments I read here is that what the heckler did was acceptable.  It wasn’t.  Not only was he being needlessly offensive and vulgar, he was preventing the comedienne from doing her job.  Little wonder she was upset about it.

Freedom of speech comes with responsibility.  It does not give one permission to, say, yell “Fire!” in a crowded theatre when there isn’t one.

I agree that the heckler is in the wrong here.  I’m not a fan of heckling in almost all cases, except where the performer is using his/her stage to push a rather offensive message (say, like the Dixie Chicks did), and even then, a simple boo will suffice.  From what the article said, it was not just the one comment but several (didn’t see the video).  The company is very much within it’s right to fire the employee for his behavior while representing the company.

That said, I don’t think that comment alone constitutes harassment or sexism and there really is no need to paint it that way.  It’s not hard to envision a female making the same comment to a man (although he may consider it as a compliment).  Besides that, any heckling in that situation could get the employee fired.  The specific comments themselves were immaterial.

To me, this is a just not really poor example to throw out as a case of sexism or of women behaving badly.  There are much better examples out there.

As an aside, I don’t think comedians should be required to have to deal with hecklers.  As a member of the audience, I don’t need to see a comedian throw a witty comeback, I’m fine with him her just going on with his routine and having the heckler thrown out.

    Ok. Then do it.

This is perfect and absolute truth. I will be the first one to hang a woman out on the ringer when she thinks she can step out of line and use her “entitlement” to behave like a scumbag. In this case however, I am still unable to disagree with her being very upset. This was a company event and in ANY corporate setting, this would be considered sexual harassment. The man was justly fired for being a fool and he is the only one to blame for giving her the ability to scream harassment.

When a profesional comedian walks off stage because of a heckler, she’s bad at her job.

This is what “publicly humiliated” her?

“There’s a 51 per cent chance that my buddy here will have sex with you, and I will take the other 49%”.

If she had any brains, humor or creativity she would have said:

“But I have the vagina. And if you and I were the last two people on Earth… there’s a 100% chance you and I would be the last two people on Earth”.

ANYTHING but walking off the stage crying.

He took a “rapey tone”?? Give me a f~~~ing break. Rape the heckler back.

Quarter wave, the heckler heckled. This is stand up comedy, not f~~~ing King Lear. Heckling IS part of the job. Taking on hecklers and shredding them is what a good comedian does.

Was booze served? Similar to her, was the audience briefed that PC ruled that evening and that  no interaction of any nature was acceptable with this bitch? Did she get fired for failing miserably at her job? Or at least not get paid for the evening?

And as has been pointed out, calling out the holy grail of victim hood by bringing out the cries of rape tells us she is full of s~~~. In fact if women are capable of corporate CEO positions, military leadership positions, or similar high stress decision making, then certainly she would be capable of some sort of retort within her field of “expertise”. There was no physical threat, and in fact she had the attention of everyone and a microphone, giving her the power. So what does she do? Wrings her hands, cries victim, cries rape, and runs to the shelter of the patriarchal corporation and uses THEIR power, to by proxy, take on the guy. Is this what the empowered women of today are capable of?

Yeah her deadpan delivery is way off. She would be a s~~~ comic if she was a dude with this material and delivery.

No its not shaming for her having a vagina. Its her being a s~~~ty comic. Its a very tough job and she just is not very good. Most comics could be funnier with sock puppets. That’s like mowing lawns for a living and bitching about how the grass keeps growing too high.

She’s a f~~~ing comic. Part of the job is getting heckled. But guess what some comics ask to be heckled and make a living off of dealing with comebacks with ease. As Jimmy Carr would say “If you want my comeback your going to have scrap it off your mom’s teeth” and “It’s not like I come to your work and knock the sailors c~~~s out of your mouth is it?”

There is heckling, which comes with the territory, and there is boorishness.  The incident was an example of the latter.  Had it occurred in a setting such as a bar or comedy club, it might have been a different matter.  How that would have been handled would have been at the discretion of the management or the bouncers.  But this occurred at a company function.  The heckler likely violated defined behaviour codes and did openly did so, so he had no excuse for what he did.

Regardless, heckling should not be an opportunity to be crass and abandon common sense.

If the comedian was a guy and the heckler was a chick…

And when you’re a good comedian, you come up with something witty to make them shut their mouth, usually. The heckler may have been rude, but I’ve seen it happen to another comedian, some feminist started shouting bs because he was joking about women or something, and man, he shut her the hell up.

It is a common failing of childhood to think that if one makes a hero out of a demon the demon will be satisfied.
