So, in perusing the help wanted adds, I have seen a lot of demand for welders. I have some experience and a local place has a decent welding program that leads to certification.
My main concern is that I am no longer a young man and I have heard that welding is a young man’s game. Anyone have experience working as a certified welder?
The pay is not great, but I will take steady work over feast or famine.

I’m going to plug my field. Have you considered trucking? 5 weeks of training leads to 50-80 salary starting out, you don’t need to pay rent or for a car if you live in the truck. It’s suitable for people dedicated to living without serious relationships.
At any rate, i know another guy looking at welding. He wants to move to underwater welding eventually to increase the pay. I also had a cousin that did it for a while but it certainly didn’t seem glamorous. He had to do some sort of elevated welding, so he was frequently hanging from wires welding things 40 feet up and ended up not feeling comfortable with the job and left the whole field.
Murph ~ There is nothing brave or manly about entering into a contract with somebody which allows them to take your money, assets, children, and decades of your future income on a mere whim.
Bro there are a lot of welders who are in their 40’s, 50’s, etc., so if you’re worried about age don’t let it discourage you whatsoever. It’s a skill that you pick up on with experience, but you need to make sure you get better with it overtime because companies will generally hire and pay good money to those that have the credentials and can back it up. Are you planning on joining unions? Be prepared to jump from several projects to another and it’s true early on in your career the pay won’t be that great considering the amount of demanding work you’ll be doing but as I’ve said experience does kind of alleviate that.
have you considered being a millwright or industrial electrician? Those are always on demand and the pay is better too.
