Those who have tools and skills and those who do not.

A couple girls in my apartment complex left me a note on my door this morning.

“Dear Dude,

We saw you carrying what looks like a tool box when you moved in. None of the boys in the apartments here actually own tools. We need our furniture fixed, screws tightened, nails pounded back in and pictures and a mirror hung and a lightbulb changed. Can you help us?”

yeah, I know, I’ve seen enough porn to know how this turns out, but I think this is a legitimate problem.

A couple of the young men I worked with at the hardware store had to be taught how to use simple hand tools. Ever see a man fascinated with a crescent wrench before? They understood hammers, but one guy had a note card, turn to the left to loosen, turn to the right to tighten…lol what happens when he is working upside down, around an obstruction just within reach in the dark.

The same guy was amused that there were different kinds of screw heads, different kinds of screws…wood screws vs metal vs drywall vs deck screws, and nails, 10 penny common, finish nails, brads, roofing, galvanized? it all blew his mind.

I have three sets of tools, common house tools, some power tools and I have bicycle specific tools. I used to have stain glass working tools and jigs. How do men grow up not having or knowing how to use tools? Am I a freak of nature that I understand plumbing or wiring? My grandfather was a general contractor, and my dad worked with him. My dad passed on the skills necessary to complete home remodeling tasks, and I taught my own daughters how to do this stuff, working with me on remodeling and painting their own rooms.

Say you charge by the hour…Just my take on that because once you start doing it for free just to help out…those girls are going to be referring you to the hive and expecting you to do all sort of stuff for them…And if you refuse because you have your life to live you would then be branded as an asshole…

Make it a deal especially that you need to pull some extra just for anything…Make them understand that you are in a pinch and would do those things in exchange for something…And dont let them borrow your tools…God knows they know how to use them or take care of them…I too love my tools and have separate tool box for general purpose, electronics/pc and plumbing…The feminists and manginas are too busy ranting that they dont need men that they cant even fix simple problems…
Make it a project basis…Like if you can fix that…it would be a few dollars or something but stay clear of flirting…Let them pay for the work you do…Its equality or something….

i’m thinking ignore.

Some boxes are for rent, box trucks, mailboxes, and ummm box but my toolbox is not for rent.

I found it so strange that my co worker had no clue about tools or how to put bolts through metal beams to hold them in place. My older coworkers tried explaining thread count, and he said like bed sheets? wtaf. yeah like bedsheets.

I have been messing with cars, houses, bikes mechanical s~~~ since I was 9. I’m not brilliant by any means, but the total absence of tool skills was shocking.

I don’t think ignore is the right response. Simply post your rates. I’ve changed dryer belts for a dinner. It never hurts to have friends. Just don’t be a doormat. Charge money for your services. Maybe you’ll be the guy girls say about “I don’t know what he’s fixing, but mine just broke.”

Don’t even think about making money on that deal. A client who lives in your building is always bad news. They are your neighbors, think gossip and bad-mouthing and if the fancy takes them they can make your life miserable to the point where you’ll have to move, if you don’t end up in prison on false charges.
