Sometimes the path of least resistance is not a good choice.
There are times when when one must make difficult decisions, and follow through with it. Consequence is a natural occurrence to any action or decision. I readily live with that, it is becoming intolerable that so many do not.
I have found that there are more things I value, that I have personally earned than not.
All of my trials and tribulations have made me who I am, and I believe I am a stronger person for it.
There is always a time for compromises in life, however I believe if I compromise too much, I have actually surrendered my right to self determination, and as sure as some woman disapproving of my choices, there will always be someone willing to use me to their own ends.

Recently I was out in the woods, sitting quietly under some trees on a snow covered hilltop. When I noticed a hare making its way down to an open field, following the lower contours of the hill, totally oblivious to a coyote that was tracking it.
The hare was about midway between the field and the wood line when it noticed the coyote. The chase was on, it didn’t end well for the hare.

Whats the point of this you may ask?
Well, had the hare turned left and headed to the woods (a little more effort required) it would have greatly increased its chance of survival. However, it chose the easiest route, to an open field, thereby giving the coyote full view and advantage and ensured it would become lunch.
The thought that popped into my head was. “There ya go mr. rabbit, wrong move, sometimes the path of least resistance in not a good choice”.

There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it

It is true that greater effort typically leads to greater rewards, but being reckless is not beneficial. I think it is important to careful consider the effectiveness of a resistant path and whether one truely desires the reward of it. Hard work applied without intelligence is just plain wasteful at best and damaging at worst. Its better to apply hard work intelligently using the most efficient and promising methods at one’s disposal.

I think it’s a matter of learning to be ‘uncomfortably comfortable’. You’re putting in effort and accepting discomfort to achieve personal growth.
