Late this afternoon I discovered that my emails to a fellow senior engineer began bouncing back to me as “undeliverable”. I walked down the hall to our IT folks and stated that I was having email issues again. They told me that there was nothing wrong with the company email. Instead they volunteered that “upper management” had requested this gentleman’s email be disabled. I then learned he had been abruptly terminated and subsequently escorted out of the building.

I was both shocked and dismayed. I knew better than to protest in any way shape or form, but I now have the sneaking suspicion that the whole event was staged. It will be interesting to see if yet another “special person” will ascend into his program management slot. I’ll know more over the coming week and will report back accordingly.

In the meantime, when I got home this evening I started making myself a bourbon on the rocks in a tall drinking glass. As I was doing so, I found myself humming a long forgotten tune in my head. I stopped for a second and was trying to remember where that tune came from. Then without warning it sprang to the forefront and I started laughing and began singing it out loud to myself and the dog. It was the summer of 1985, just after divorce Number 1 when I was unemployed except for a temporary job towing banners up and down the Jersey and Delaware Shores using an old worn out Piper Pawnee.

Gentlemen,… just for fun and certainly not promoting it as a new lifestyle…… and without any further ado, I give you George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers.

I work as a contract software engineer. One of our offices biggest customers has been in the process of laying off 30% of their staff in the last year. Not too surprisingly once that starts happening the “all stars” that they don’t want to leave start taking other jobs elsewhere too. What you end up with are the protected, the brown nosers, and the inept. As a result the work that still needs to be done starts piling up.

It should come as no surprise that lately business has been doing well.

    Well, here’s today’s update.

The guy was terminated with extreme prejudice for being too honest and too forthcoming with the customer in revealing technical issues, cost overruns and schedule slippages confronting the program. Apparently he was supposed to lie!

He of course is being immediately replaced by a woman with no technical background whatsoever. I can only assume that a woman who doesn’t understand anything will not be able to reveal anything to the Federal government customer.

I simply cannot believe what I am seeing…..This so f~~~ed up on so many levels.
